Official: Bateman Out As D Coordinator and Safety Coach

The TOS report noted (perhaps we should say 'stressed') that there was disagreement about what was wrong on D. So clear;ly Mack blames Bateman, and Bateman being no fool would have stressed that players on every position group on D exhibit poor fundamentals and that many times over most games this past season, a position group of two would play downs or entire series as if they had been given a different play call than the one the DC called.

Bateman is indeed Mack's new Manny Diaz: the non-BFF whom Mack makes the scapegoat for his staff's many failures.

DeWitt gone too. So that means that Mack knows he needs to be able to offer any decent candidate the right to approve the hiring of at least 1 position coach on D.

And Cross, Thigpen, and Bly are BFF.

Now if the boosters could be able to force Mack to replace Searels and 1 other position coach on D ...

Would it be any surprise if Bateman goes somewhere else and fields a fantastic D?

The SCAR game was a thing of beauty. Maybe SC coaches just didn't prep well, but that 5th yr QB looked so confused that game.
Our D vs Clemson was incredible.

That end-zone pick by Chaz vs Duke was incredible. There were quite a few great defensive stops and highlights (** relative to the past decade ** ) that seemed to come from Bateman's calls and scheme. The regression this yr is still a mystery.

I would still feel a lot better if Searels was leaving. With him still here, I'm not sure how much the overall win total will be impacted in a positive way. The line has to improve for us to be a legit contender in the coastal. Actually winning the ACC is no closer if Searles is still here.

that's the frustrating part, the D from time to time showed up bigtime, and not just one play here and there. But when it was bad....

All I want is a DC who understands and is able to communicate advanced concepts like 'contain'.

Bateman's scheme never fit the players we have. Wasn't a good fit. Poor D three years in a row. Need a defensive scheme that fits the personnel.
Or, if you are determined to run a certain scheme, recruit players who fit that scheme.
