I'll admit...I've never been into the Olympics. Curling just isn't my thing, but to each their own.

But -- why in God's name would anyone, spectator or athlete, make the trek to Rio for this round of the Olympics? They are now saying that they have found body parts (a young female's foot, to be exact) washed up on the beach where they intend to hold the volleyball competition. And they cannot seem to find / recapture the drug lord who escaped custody.

This is making Detroit look like a paradise right now.

It does seem bad, but I'm also trying to take it with a grain of salt as it seems like problems are always part of the narrative in the runup to the Olympics. By the time the games start, they usually have most of it ironed out and the focus shifts to the ceremonies and the events themselves.

Remember all the fuss about infrastructure and bathrooms in Sochi? But then did any of it actually impact the Games?

With that said, Brazil is not as developed as many previous host countries, so it could really be that the problems are worse. In addition to the crime it sounds like the water where the sailing will be held is gross - and there's not much that can be done about that in a short time frame.

It's a joke that Brazil got the World Cup and the Olympics in such quick succession.

This is a country that has entire cities consisting of slums for miles and miles (called favelas) Pictured below is the largest hill favela in Rio:

So many of Brazil's people are in poverty and don't have jobs, and yet Brazil spent millions and millions and millions of dollars building World Cup soccer stadiums and all the expenditures that come with hosting a World Cup and then an Olympics. That money could've been spent, you know, helping Brazilians?

There is no way I would go if I were an athlete. I have a really, really strong gut feeling something horrible will happen... not sure what but I have a bad, bad feeling about these games. I'll be praying my rosary over-time for these games!

It's beyond insane to let Brazil host a world event, let alone the two biggest events. That place is a shithole. Referees have been beheaded on the field when soccer matches didn't go certain fans' way. Now we have the Zika and body parts washing up on shore. This is making Sochi look like Shangri-la.

I absolutely would pull out if I was an Olympic athlete.

Speaking of which, I've always heard that in the Olympic Village of every Olypmics, they hand out condoms by the truck load. Apparently all the athletes are so amped up on adrenaline and endorphins that it's just a non-stop **** fest among the athletes.

I have just never had any interest in the Olympics outside of the "Miracle on Ice".

For the most part the Olympics suck. They often times get put in crappy cities, every athlete is doping or taking steroids or something - it's just a matter of who gets caught, and for the majority of the world the events are at awkward times (and with the rise in twitter and similar sources keeping the results quiet until air time is impossible).

Some events are fun to watch - mostly in the winter games though. The summer games are just lets find 50 different ways to run and 50 different ways to swim, and that's that.

I can't remember the last time I watched more than 10 mins of the summer olympics.

It's amazing to me that groups like FIFA and the IOC are allowed to exist given the shit they pull over on the general population of 3rd world countries.

Zika virus, super bacteria in the water, body parts washing up on the beach, insufficient infrastructure, no police protection... sounds like a great place to hold the Olympics, and the IOC was legit to chose Rio.
