It’s time to start the first round of voting for the John Lennon Region. You will have 48 hours to make your selection. I’ll give a brief rundown of each band and include my vote in a spoiler alert.

1 Beatles- To no one’s surprise the Beatles grabbed the #1 seed in the region named after their former singer. They started out as an English rock band before making their way into the US charts. They are the best-selling band in history with estimated sales of over 800 million albums sold worldwide.

16 Dave Matthews Band- Coming out of Virginia in the early 90’s, DMB just squeaks into the tournament. Known for their expanded band that includes saxophones, violins and more as well as improvisational renditions of their songs while on tour.

While DMB is one of my personal favorites, you can’t deny the Beatles musical influence. My vote goes to the Beatles.

2 Tom Petty- Tom is one of the best-selling artist of all time, selling more than 80 million albums worldwide. Known for such songs as “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” his rock and roll passion began when he met Elvis at the age of ten.

15 Doobie Brothers- The Doobie Brothers have been active for five decades despite going through several lineup changes. They’ve sold more than 40 million albums.

This one is an obvious choice for me since I grew up listening to him even though he’s not in my age bracket. He also had a great cameo in the Simpsons. Tom Petty for the win.

3 Eagles- Selling over 150 million records worldwide and winning six Grammy Awards they are one of the most successful bands in history. Their lineup has featured some great musicians such as Don Henley and Joe Walsh.

14 Fleetwood Mac- Formed in London, they found major success in the US after adding Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Their second album featuring the duo would become the 8th best-selling album of all time.

I heard the mission bell and I was thinking to myself that I have to vote for the Eagles.

4 Pink Floyd- Another one of our English band friends, PF is known for their elaborate live shows and their sonic experimentation. They let us know that you can’t have your pudding if you don’t eat your meat.

13 Steely Dan- After finding commercial success in the early 70’s Steely Dan broke up in 1981. Known for their harmonies and chord sequences, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Going with Pink Floyd here. Just too many great songs to ignore.

5 U2- Coming from Dublin U2 has two of the most well know musicians in the world, Bono and the Edge. They are one of the most critically successful bands in the tournament with 22 Grammy awards.

12 James Taylor- Repping NC, Taylor moved to Chapel Hill in the early 50’s. With over 100 million records sold it’s clear that he has a friend.

How can you vote against Bono? I can’t, so I’m going with U2.

6 Dire Straits- Yet another one of our British friends to invade this bracket, Dire Straits has also cracked the 100 million mark. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame later this year.

11 Billy Joel- Our first pianist in this region is none other than Billy Joel. Breaking the 150 million record mark he has 33 top 40 hits in the US. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The piano man is singing me a song, I’m going with Billy Joel.

7 Styx- With four consecutive albums certified multi-platinum, Styx and their synthesizers make it into the tournament as the 7 seed.

10 Elton John- Our second piano man in this bracket and yet another English entry, Elton John has sold over 300 million albums and has a streak that includes 7 consecutive #1 albums.

Going with Elton John. In addition to not really liking Styx, I also don’t want to be called a homophobe.

8 CCR- Even though CCR was only together for slightly more than a decade, they are a staple on rock stations across the US. Lead by the Fogerty brothers, they were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

9 Stevie Wonder- Our final piano man and surprise entry of the group is Stevie Wonder. Despite being blind for almost all of his life he has become one of the most successful artist of all time selling over 100 million albums and winning 25 Grammys.

No way can I vote against someone who has overcome what Stevie has.

1 Beatles - DMB's live shows are just an all-around great time, but there's no denying what the Beatles meant to rock and roll; and still do. Even if you're not much of a fan, their influence still resonates today, and it's very likely that most of your favorite artists consider them an influential band in their careers.

2 Tom Petty - I really like both, but TP remained relevant to me for a longer period. A unique voice. RIP Tom.

3 Eagles - another tough one... I'll go with the Eagles because Joe Walsh; even though the memory of a young Stevie Nicks has me doubting my choice.

13 Steely Dan - my first upset special: I like PF too, but always liked Steely Dan's sound. If you ever really listen to their lyrics closely, they can be some cynical SOB's, which is in total contradiction to their smooth sounding grooves.

5 U2 - I like some JT every now and then, but I prefer listening to U2.

11 Billy Joel - another mild upset; mainly because Billy had a larger body of work that I enjoy.

10 Elton John - EJ's early / mid-70's stuff is really good. I liked Styx, but never forget.... they gave us Mr. Roboto!

9 Stevie Wonder - what else can I say... he's a musical genius!

This whole bracket was tough; I pretty much like all the nominees.

16 Dave Matthews Band -- the Beatles blow.

2 Tom Petty
-- DON'T HAVE.. TO LIVE LIKE A REFUGEE!

14 Fleetwood Mac -- "Landslide" is good and I don't like the Eagles.

4 Pink Floyd
-- less shitty of the two choices here.

12 James Taylor -- Damn Yankee, but at least he sings about Carolina

6 Dire Straits
-- they have that one song. That's all I got. And Billy Joel is a no.

7 Styx
-- Hangman's coming down from the gallows.

8 CCR
-- A bunch of Californians pretending they're from Louisiana. I dig it.

1 Beatles - One of my first live shows was DMB and it was great, but this one is no contest.

2 Tom Petty - Tom, Tom, Tom. Just an incredible body of work. Such a chill vibe and great lyrics, huge body of work that has stood the test of time.

3 Eagles - Tough one for me as I'm not a big fan of either. But there have been Eagles songs I really enjoyed at different times in my life.

4 Pink Floyd - Love some Pink Floyd, nothing else like it.

12 James Taylor - Another matchup I'm not too concerned about, giving the nod to JT for his love of NC.

6 Dire Straits -
Very underrated (in general, not specifically in this bracket). Knopfler is incredible.

10 Elton John

9 CCR

Stevie Wonder over CCR would be a sad.

DMB - **** the Beatles

Tom Petty - what @TarHeelNation11 said

Fleetwood Mac - Parents love them, so I grew up listening to them. Also, if I hear "Hotel California" one more time, I will commit mass murder.

Steely Dan - coin flip, don't care for either

U2 - James Taylor is boring as hell

Billy Joel - "Money For Nothing" gets stuck in my head all the time and it pisses me off. I can get down to some "Piano Man."

Elton John

CCR
- more rock than Stevie Wonder

1 DMB-Changing my vote. THN convinced me to really go more with who I like better. Beatles have some decent stuff but if I had to listen to one it would be DMB, though mainly the first four or five albums.

15 Doobie Brothers-Outside of 'American Girl' Tom Petty kind of sucks.

14 Fleetwood Mac-Eagles are the most overrated band ever along with Kiss.

4 Pink Floyd-They will get my vote no matter who they are up against. Easily my winner.

5 U2-I mean, this is a massive mismatch. I think they only people who may go against U2 may do it for political reasons.

6 Dire Straits-I don't love either but like both well enough. Pretty close one.

10 Elton John-Like Elton, can't stand Styxx.

16 Dave Matthews Band - Ya, the Beatles are great/iconic/whatever, but I like DMB's style better, which is Why I Am picking them.

2 Tom Petty -
Looks like it's the Doobie Brothers who are Free fallin' here

3 Eagles -
They just give me that peaceful easy feeling

4 Pink Floyd -
they're decent, but this is more based on the fact that I don't think I've ever heard a Steely Dan song

12 James Taylor -
A Bostonian that sings about Carolina, how can I turn that down? Plus I don't like U2's Roy Williams tribute song Vertigo

11 Billy Joel -
Don't mind him picking up DUIs and drunken car wrecks like they're going out of style, he's good, and trying to die young.

10 Elton John -
Love his Kim Jong Un tribute song Rocket Man

9 Stevie Wonder -
this was the hardest one of the region for me. But my vote is Signed, Sealed, Delivered for Stevie.

We've been over this. You can say you don't like the Beatles, but you can't say they blow, or they suck,
I didn't vote for them because I don't like them; therefore, I do not consider them the best.

Which of course reanimates the debate of do we vote for what we perceive is the best in terms of overall societal view, or do we just vote on personal preference? I choose the latter.

I'm unaware of the connection between that and the song. Do tell. I don't even pretend to like DMB. I just dislike him/them less than I dislike The Bee-uls.
Oh and you come crash
into me, baby
And I come into you
Hike up your skirt a little more
and show the world to me

and show your world to me

1 Beatles - Final Four contender. Other than DMB's debut album, they're only good for chicks and the dudes trying to have sex with those chicks.

15 Doobie Brothers
- I don't hate Tom Petty, but his music has just never grabbed me. Giving the Doobie Brothers the nod here due to their awesome name and their contributions to Yacht Rock.

3 Eagles
- Speaking of Yacht Rock, what an tough matchup. Both the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac have incredible libraries but I'm going with the Eagles.

13 Steely Dan
- F*** this contest. Making me choose between Pink Floyd and Steely Dan is just wrong. Once again I'm using the awesome name criteria to go with Steely Dan and also recognizing the incredible complexity of their work.

5 U2
- Ugh. U2, I guess.

11 Billy Joel - There will be a number of bands I vote for in this contest based on their impact on my childhood. Billy Joel was one of those.

7 Styx
- As much as I admire Sir Elton John's body of work, this is another one where where my formative years determine my vote.

9 Stevie Wonder - Because I'm a spiteful bastard and want to see whether @TarHeelNation11 will actually delete his account.

You vote on your personal preference, of course, but you've shown many times that you have horrible and poorly-informed opinions. And that's a fact.
I said I'd leave OOTB forever. Didn't say I'd delete my account.
They both have the same effect of me never having to read your awful opinions again, so....
