Opening Night Stuff (ND game)...

Salient point Gary.
Here's the rub on that though. No one has learned to demand the ball from him yet. Lot of standing there watching Cole do his thing, with no real movement on anyone's part and that's something the 3 I was with last night talked about almost immediately.

That, of course, will change once the staff starts implementing offensive sets, teaching proper screening technique, single & double screening, ball movement across the perimeter, P & R techniques, etc. Did ya happen to notice that we were in free lance in 95+% of last nights game? In the players defense, they have not had the offensive coaching that's needed due to an extreme focus on defensive principles and technique, as Roy mentioned during his post game interview, that more time has been used on that side of the ball, and offensively there is structure to teach the players going forth.
Indeed. We were talking from almost the get-go about Cole having the ball too much and yes, it was a mutual thing with the other guys being spectators too often. I'm hoping AP and Leaky in particular (and BRob once he gets back) will hunt the ball more and even let Cole do some off-ball work using screens to get open. Sure, he was amazing in the second half but he shouldn't have to create his own shot so much --- don't wanna turn him into James Harden ---and the Freelance won't function well without ball movement, as you know... not to mention the value of "pitching ahead" in transition.

Totally agree with you. Even Cole commented that he has to get others more involved. What most folks are not either aware of, or fail to know, is what I have mentioned several times already. That we have not even begun to install an offense as yet, so the lost or Chinese fire drill look should be expected this early and is mostly a byproduct of starting the season so much earlier.

If it were last year, the team would have about 60-70% of the total offense installed already, but with so many new and younger players, priority 1 is defense and that is what Roy and staff have concentrated on to date. Roy specifically mentioned in his post game interview that the team needs to learn offense, and I would certainly expect that part of the players basketball education to begin very, very soon..., like tomorrow.

We may very well see a different look offensively come Friday's game. Something to look for. Also expect some run & jump defense employed Friday as well.

Nice to win a conference game always. 34 points in your first game is very impressive. Brooks looked good in there and Platek as well. Long way to go and the young players have a lot to learn, but should be fun.

Platek gave some good minutes last night and this team will need that from him. He still has a lot to learn and Roy was very critical of a couple things Platek did but he will get better with experience.

AP was great last night. I've been one of the ones saying "let's see him get big minutes and play well against ACC competition."

He did exactly that last night. Great to see.
Never thought I'd see you say this. Way to man up.

I kept saying "quit standin' around and waitin' for Cole to make a play." Some guys are just so good that they mesmerize the team.

Since we all have a Cole Anthony hangover today, one cannot deny the kids awesome physical gifts, and his polished game. But to me the most impressive thing I saw was just his "want to". Many times you dont see immensely talented players play as hard as he did. Sure he can score, but his effort on the boards shows more what that kid is about. He just wants it more than anybody else out there. That combination is hard to stop
He has tremendous physicals skills, but like Mike, it's hos work ethic that makes him special.

There was a reason they didn't go inside often. He defended Mooney well, which is huge against ND.
Love to see Brooks tough without fouling, Mooney is a perimeter guy mainly though. Kinda like Luke was for us. Durham is their only low block type guy, and he's mainly a shot blocker big.

Hey, still good to see, but ND isn't looking to go inside much against anybody. We hammered them on the boards though, which was great to see. Always one of Roy's trademarks, and he did that without fouling as well.

Like many of us, most of the guys were standing around in awe of what Cole was doing, and understandably so. Talents of his level don't come around very often. But our staff will stress the necessity to move without the ball and present themselves as viable targets for Cole's passes. Cole will have more and more help as the other players acclimate themselves to his exceptional talent.

A few things that really impress me about Cole:
1- his work ethic is off the charts, Jordanesque. That is extremely rare.
2- he has a very well rounded game, he defends voraciously, he rebounds as well as you could possibly want a guard to rebound, and he understands the importance of getting his teammates involved in scoring, despite being a scoring machine. Individual accolades aside, winning is paramount in his genetic makeup. Again, a rare breed.Having to replace 80% of the scoring from last year's team, what does Roy do? Turn to defense and rebounding, the two basic building blocks of any good team. As we rebound and defend better, and we're already showing signs of being a great rebounding team, our offense will naturally come as a result.

Our offense will develop as a natural result of our emphasis on rebounding and defense. Roy says every year that rebounding is the most important statistic in basketball. IIRC, we have finished in the top 3 nationally the last three years. With Mando, Garrison at his natural PF spot, and long wing players to chip in, I think we can be right there again this year. We just crushed a very good rebounding, veteran ND team on the boards, it was undoubtedly the difference in the game.

One of the things I was most impressed with was how well Garrison played defense without getting in foul trouble. That's going to be important for this team.
Because of his penchant for fouling, the fact that Garrison played 39 minutes against Mooney, a guy who may very well be first team All ACC this year, impressed me as much as anything that happened. With Sterling out, we need Garrison to average 35 MPG this year and provide something like 12/8 on a consistent basis. I think he can.

Garrison defended Mooney well all over the floor.

I agree.

midline...if you have not read the story in the topic that dadica13 posted, do yourself a favor and give it a read. That article highlights his never quit spirit and helps you understand the "want to" that governs his play, and for that matter, his life in general.

Platek mentioned in his postgame interview that Mooney is the lone returning All-ACC player from last season. He’s the focal point of their offense - if they can help it - as evidenced by them going to him early. But Brooks got up into him on the block and the perimeter, and that shook Mooney.

It was a huge tone-setter for the defense as a whole. They shot 35-29 and their best player only got 10 points on 13 shots. Highly inefficient.

Wonder if Cole will be anything close to the hype Zion "the great one" got from the talking heads since his opening game was more impressive that his opening game? Less the dunk contest!
Not being a smart aleck, but who cares? Cole will get a boatload of hype, and rightfully so. He's not Zion, he's Cole. And that's plenty good enough.

Good point. I hope that's contagious. Leaky could use some of that. He's already good, but he'll be a star if he can crank it up a bit.

No doubt that will be key. Nice to see, although ND did not go inside much at all.
Yeah. That was weird.

Lasz wants to be a stretch 4, and Durham just seemed to lose heart after picking up a couple of quick fouls, but what's up with Mooney being unwilling to mix it up inside? Doesn't he want to play in the NBA? Dude's a senior. He needs to get in there a lot more.

Totally different games. For once, I understood the attention Duke got. Zion was otherworldly.

I do think if Cole keeps up this style of play, he will be the most hyped player in America. But not on the Zion level.

Ya, and his fat ass is already breaking down before he's played an NBA game. Who could have seen that one coming?

Yea, I expected more out of Leaky. Maybe because with his length he just looks the part. But he seemed terribly indecisive on the offensive end. But I know he has missed a lot of practice so not sure of that game give much of an indicator. Have to give it a while
