I've read a few reports that Phil Longo is now the OC. I hadn't heard his name mentioned as a possibility until yesterday, and don't know much about him, so tell me if he's legit.

I read the article on The Spun, which I don't read regularly. so maybe someone can enlighten me on rather it's a rag, or halfway decent. No official announcement, BTW, but here's one of the links: https://thespun.com/news/mack-browns-makes-huge-assistant-coach-hire-at-unc

We've started discussing on the thread on OC and DC.

SMILE...

!!!!!!!!!!!! GO TAR HEELS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally an OC that will use our WR talent downfield instead of those stupid WR screens for nothing.

The TBs should be happy too since LBs and DBs will be busy covering passes downfield opening up running lanes for easy 5+ yd runs.

Now Newsome will catch passes 15 yds downfield then using his skills for greater gains instead of fighting to get to the 1st down marker in Fed's O.

Yes, Longo will use WRs on short routes specifically to try to get a fast WR open going deep. He will do that from the opening possession through the final seconds.

The weakness of his offense at Ole Miss was lack of RB game, but that also has been true of Ole Miss for several years before he arrived. They have not had the kind of RB depth and overall talent we have now. Longo will have 4 RBs with game experience who all can contribute against anybody. If he integrates them properly with WRs pushing DBs back deep, then the offense can be extremely effective, including in the Red Zone.

Add in a mobile QB like Ruder and the RS offense becomes more dynamic.

And as others have mentioned, simply going from the SEC to the ACC could also improve his red zone numbers. I think I read a stat that over the past 5 drafts, the SEC has had more defensive players taken in the first round than any other conference. I think Longo has the potential to do very well at UNC.

Go Heels!

The SEC has more DT talent than any league, and no real close #2. The SEC also is loaded with DE and LB talent. That makes it very difficult to score a TD when in the Red Zone.

To score RZ TDs against that much Front 7 talent, you need very good OL and very good, well used, RBs. If you have those, the Ds must focus on preventing you from running it into the end zone, and that will open up the field for your QB to pass for TDs.

In Chizik's first year, UNC had the best improvement on D from the previous year in the country.

If Bateman repeats that, we could be 10-2 next year.
Whoa, Nelly. Anything better than 8-4 would be gravy.

What I hope to see most from next year’s defense is discipline and better fundamentals, especially in the area of tackling. Nothing frustrates me more than to see a player who is in great position duck his head and miss a basic tackle. This routinely happened after Gene left. And for goodness sake, teach our DB’s to turn their heads and find the ball. How many long pass completions or pass interference calls did we allow because our DB’s simply failed to do so?

In a word, fundamentals.

I agree....It was torture to watch the Tar Heels play defense at times last year, and the lack of Fundamentals was a major part of that...

If Bateman can get our guys to buy into his coaching and schemes , we have the potential to rapidly improve on that side of the ball next season...

I agree. I think we’ll see significant improvement on defense as well as offense next year. And that will be because we’re more fundamentally sound. I really don’t think we’ll have any problems with the kids buying into the new coaching schemes and the new coaches. I’m sure they’re tired of losing.

Most all teams (pro and college) teach face guarding in today’s game. Very rarely will you see guys locate the ball unless they are in good position to do so. The rules favoring the offense make it much harder for the defender to be in position to track and locate the ball.

They didn’t face guard effectively either. Watch a good college secondary. The difference between the way they defend the pass and the way we do is night and day.

But LB play and lack of a pass rush made it difficult for our DBs. They were much better this year than years past.

An accurate passer will shred a
Face guarding secondary by throwing the receiver open. But theres very few of those around. Maybe a half dz a season. And they get drafted.
