He's somehow not getting charged for this - but is forfeiting all the profits he made back to the SEC (not the conference). Looks like he owed some money to a big wig gambler, and then used that gambler's insider tip to make about a million bucks, in order to pay back said gambler.

Seems like there's potentially more to this story than is being released right now. But I wonder if his integrity for potentially throwing/fixing past tournaments will be called into question.

I've heard Phil can be a dick in person. But I'm guessing none of us have first hand knowledge of that (maybe gtee and bleed). So as a fan of golf, what in the hell is there not to like about Phil? His game is that of a swashbuckler. He's the one going for pins. He's the one that goes for it in 2. He's the one turning the club over and hitting it right-handed....or pulling out an inconceivable flop shot...or knocking it off a port-o-potty onto the green. He takes chances. He's creative. That's what I love in a golfer. And then in press conferences, he always says the right things. He acts humble (and frankly I couldn't care any less if it's all phony or not). He praises other golfers. He deflects attention most of the time and he seems like a real family man.

I f***ing hate that guy.

You hit the nail on the head toward the end. He comes across as so damn phony. It's the same reasoning why people hate Bubba.

But other golfers love Phil. They hate Bubba.

As far as being phony, I like my professional athlets to be phony. Because I'm going to know them on a very superficial level. So I want them to do and say all the right things even if that's not who they really are. Now, I don't pick my friends that way because I know them at a much deeper level. But for people I don't know and will never know, ...just say what I want to hear and play in a way that I enjoy.

I know someone who played with Phil in a pro-am and said Phil is great. I've never known of anyone to say he is a dick either, other than the chuckleheads on this thread.

What's not to like about Phil?

People who pretend to be perfect, aren't. Save us all the charade and don't pretend.

Phil pretends to be perfect? When and where did he do that?

I have heard him say many times in interviews how he screwed up- in fact, I don't think I have ever heard him play a victim card- he always mans up.

For once or maybe the 2nd time I agree with you...scary.

I have nothing "first hand" but I do know he's a world class phony and largely disliked by his peers.

Oh and his hot wife got caught in the sack with MJ at a Ryder Cup about 10 years ago.

All you guys saying he is fake yet not one link. Do you have some reason of substance to dislike him or are you jealous?

Not jealous at all. Know some people in the business and contrary to what you heard it is well known most tour players can't stand him. We all have our opinions and that is mine.

"And so I don't really care if Phil Mickelson is a card in the clubhouse. Frankly, I've been around some professional golfers that I wouldn't want to hang out with either. I don't care if he's not always peppy in private. Who is? I don't even care if he is friendly and kind just for effect. So what? So he wants to be liked. So he wants to present a good image. So he wants to make people feel happy, and it makes him feel good to do nice things for people, and he wants to be a marketable commodity for businesses and maybe he even wants to present a nice image for kids to see even if he's acting happier than he feels. When did any of these things become a crime in America? Wouldn't it be better if we had more athletes who are trying to be liked and trying to present a positive reflection?"

"But when you read the actual story you find … there was no reason there. There were a couple of anonymous reporters saying that he had no friends on Tour. One questioned Mickelson’s sincerity when he wore that beeper (“Everybody’s saying, ‘Oh God, I want that beeper to go off,’” one anonymous writer told GQ). There was something about the time he criticized Tiger Woods’ equipment, and something else about changing his own equipment just before the 2004 Ryder Cup.

In other words: It was a whole lot of nothing."

Yeah, I know a few people who have been around pros a bunch and have never really heard any bad Phil stuff from them. It is mostly from people who seem to have heard it somewhere or something like that (the whole FIGJAM stuff). It is like it was started and then just perpetuated. I'm not saying it isn't true but do think it is kind of exaggerated. I don't doubt he can be difficult. Most athletes can be. However, he is nice to the fans and always seems gracious. If he is phony, then he is at least phony the right way.

I've only been to one tournament (The Master's). Tiger was the only one I would say seemed to really not give a crap about the fans. Hank Haney was well but he isn't a player.

I couldn't care if he was a nice guy, or a crappy guy, or somewhere in between.

Do people think he may have fixed/thrown/rigged some tournaments in the past based on this newfound knowledge of him being in some deep debt to one of the most prolific sports gamblers in the world? Or is this similar to the thought process of there's no way in hell the ACC would ever influence a football game to get them more money?

Sheesh, I just don't like the guy. I don't have to justify it to the likes of yous.

"Which takes me to my other friend. His thoughts about Mickelson fascinate me even more because he doesn't even try to back up his reasoning. He's just a golf fan from afar. He doesn't know anything about Phil Mickelson that would give him any insight into the man. In fact, he knows that his feelings are illogical. He sees Phil smiling and waving to the crowd and he thinks, "That's not real." He remembers a quote from long ago about how Phil was thinking about his family as he walked up 18 when he was winning some tournament, and he thinks, "No you weren't." And, perhaps most of all, he's annoyed because he thinks Phil has not gotten as much as he should from his game. True, Mickelson has won three Majors and 37 PGA tournaments, but with his talent he should have won more.

"I can't explain it," my friend said. "It's like this week, did you see how he played golf with his son at the Par 3 Tournament?"

"Yeah," I said. "Evan. He's 7."

"That annoyed me too," he said. "It annoyed me even though I know that if I was good enough play at the Masters, I would definitely want to bring my son. But it still annoyed me."

"That makes absolutely no sense," I said.

"I know," my friend said. "It's like I say, I can't explain it. I just can't stand the guy."

No chance. Great athletes have more pride than that. Plus, Phil wouldn't risk his image that he's worked so hard on.

Phil has always been a gambler. When Dan Patrick used to have a show on ESPN radio, Phil would come on once a week during NFL season and they'd talk about what games Phil liked against the spread. I was gambling frequently back in these days too and I'll say Phil, more times than not, seemed to know what he was doing.

This is why I think you guys are all jealous.

The dude is a fat goofball, yet hits crazy golf shots that we all try to pull off and never do, he's got a hot as F*** wife and a ton of cash and acts all happy go lucky.

People want a train wreck in sports.

I don't play golf so I'm not jealous of his short game.

I get that you don't like him and that's fine. I'm not President of the Phil Mickleson fan club. But from a logical standpoint, I just wish you gave us something. I mean, there's gotta be something that he has done that has made you dislike him.

I already said, he seems phony. If it's genuine, good for him. I like a little edge. I don't watch Leave it to Beaver.

It's the PGA tour. How edgy is any golfer? Name a few guys on tour that you like.
Spieth, Tiger, and Dufner are probably my three favorites. I used to strongly dislike McIlroy but I'm coming around a bit on him. I feel like Fowler is a guy I wouldn't like, but I do like him. Beyond that, none of the guys on tour interest me a ton right now. My interest in golf has waned the past few years.

Eventually, I'm going to get into playing again though, and that will reignite my interest.

I used to like Dufner until Amanda left him. Now, there's absolutely no reason to like him. I feel sorry for him. But I don't root for him anymore.

Tiger? So you dislike a guy that signs autographs for kids, leaves absurdly large tips for servers, says all the right things, smiles on the golf course and generally looks like he's having a blast and you like a guy that's stoic when he's not throwing clubs and cussing, generally ignores the fans, is always making excuses for his bad play and he ruined his career and life by cheating on his super hot wife with a Perkins waitress and another 20 women? I'm sorry if I don't understand that.

Spieth - now he's edgy. I think I saw him drinking a Mountain Dew Code Red.
