I can’t speak for the others, but I am totally on board with creating separate conservative and liberal threads as you proposed in the locked thread. Let each side speak their mind without having it lead to the inevitable arguing and name-calling.

If we go this route, would it require some additional support from the mods to combine threads when necessary, and keep the vitriol in check? Or would you rely on us to report anyone abusing the rules?

I would appreciate anything that would help get OOTB back to a place where we could have a little fun, and get away from all the divisive crap.

We are all Tar Heel fans after all, so that alone should be the glue that keeps us connected. As you mentioned, I also have friends that don’t have the same political views as myself, but we can still get along and discuss our differences in a civil manner, especially if they are UNC fans as well. However, if they are a dookie... well then they’re just an idiot anyway. LOL.

The mods and I have been talking about the best way to do this. I am happy to get input from you guys, as well. Preserving this part of the site is important to enough of you that maybe collectively we can work this out. So, let the ideas fly.

And thanks for your support. Normally, i spend zero time over here, but since it's consumed a lot of my time the last few days, I'd like to get this figured out sooner rather than later.

It doesn’t matter if you put a political thread on ignore when people come into not political threads and wreak havoc.

And it’s also no good putting individuals on ignore because if others respond to that ignored individual, then you can’t follow a thread.

The solution is for people not to act like spoiled toddlers.

Exactly. The political threads are the ones that tend to devolve into vitriolics.

I have been active on the board since 2003. The political threads fine and there were usually (not always) some good honest debates until recently. We always had a board rule about no name calling and most of us were pretty good about not doing that unless we had one too many drinks on occasion. Some newer (and no so newer) poasters resorted to consistent derogatory name calling when they did not agree on another political position or essentially calling folks Nazis or morons if their view did not match theirs. Name calling is against board rules and those that break rule should be warned, then blacklisted for repeated offenses without compromise. The derogatory posting and name calling is what drove people elsewhere.

Also, there is a big difference in derogatory name calling and jovial sparring with friends. I think know all know the difference.

My phone shows 40 threads per page. At one time recently half of those were political op’s. And not a damn one worth the effort to open

Management cares about traffic, clicks and time spent on the site, not about thread content. If you want to continuously start a bunch of repetitive threads and succeed in killing off traffic, you should expect to be banned too.

All views are allowed as long as you debate the issue instead of just insulting people. It also helps if you keep the political stuff in political threads. That's all I'm going to say about that subject, so have a great day Lyles.
