Put the ACC tournament back in Greensboro for good

Explain to me the revenue piece? I think many of us are missing it.

Why does the tourney in NYC generate more conference revenue than other places as an example?

Good point.

I don't live in NC, but visit there often.
To hear some people on this board, you'd need a horse or pickup truck to get to Raleigh. :) Or maybe that's just the students that attend, not so much a reflection on the city.

I would love for the ACC Tournament to be in Raleigh. The stadium isn't close to anything, though. But, it does give me an excuse to head to one of the watering holes.

So espn is going to have to borrow more from Disney/abc television?

The acc was founded in nc. The acc headquarters are in nc. Us oldtumers want the tourney in nc

BINGO ! We got the winner ! It should be in Greensboro , NC ! EVERY YEAR ! If you don't live in North Carolina that is your problem ! If you live in NY City pull for St. Johns ! :D J/K I don't attend but I just like it being in Greensboro, NC after all we are the tournament town.

Atlanta is no more dangerous than most large cities.....

Brooklyn has made substantial improvements but there’s some rough areas in that borough.

Go look at ticket prices. Food prices. Beer prices. Sponsorships.

Everything is inflated 2.5x up here.

Sponsorships are multi year and negotiated well in advance so not sure how that affects it a ton, maybe slightly. Concessions may net a little more.

The ACC has always sold it as an exposure thing.

They knew years in advance they were going to NYC. I can promise you that was factored into any negotiations.

A little more? Dude, it's $13 for a beer and $16 for a mixed drink. How much of that does the ACC see? I have no idea.

That’s not far off what they are in Greensboro or Atlanta. 10 for beers in both places and that was a few years ago. Not saying you are incorrect specific to prices, just not buying that it’s that big of a money thing. Maybe 5-10% max bump in revenue for the tournament if I had to guess. Not chump change but not earth shattering where we should have it there all the time. More money is made in sponsorships and TV than in person so not sure it’s terribky important where the tourney is played if they are selling more to the audience on tv which is much larger than the audience in the arena.

And I also understand I am 10000% bias because I live up here and I get to spend my 2nd straight year watching UNC play Duke on a Friday night in BK. It's pretty awesome for me :)

Usually the arena operator gets the concession revenue. All the ACC would get is tickets and sponsorship money. You can charge that in any of the cities being discussed.

Gotta think those face value tickets were higher in the Barclay's than they were in Gboro right? I'm also sure the sponsorship dollars skyrocket when moved to NYC.

Tickets were higher, but I'd be willing to bet you could charge at least that much in Greensboro and they would sell out no problem. ACC basketball is big in that area and they have no competition. Sponsorship might be a little less, but not by much because the big sponsors are paying to be on TV so the amount won't change for them. It might be less for the sponsors who want an 8x12 sign next to the men's room.

also take into account the cost for facility rental, service fees, etc are certainly more in NY than in NC. I'm telling you, the money isn't what's driving it. It's the exposure. Swofford has said as much. It's also the "everybody else is doing it so we should" mantra that has taken over college athletics.

and specific to tickets, obviously the league sets the price of tickets in the primary market with the schools getting allotments. but for those of you who have been to an ACC tourney in Greensboro, I can tell you that the secondary market for tickets is twice as good here as it is in DC, Atlanta, or Tampa as I've been to tournaments in all 3 places and it's not even close. i'm not talking about the lower end games early int the week, but the quarterfinal tickets on. supply and demand.

Correct. They may make marginally more on tickets/concessions/merchandise sales in NYC than in Greensboro strictly because people in major cities can afford to pay more than people in the sticks. But the majority of the money made is from TV and sponsorships which are consistent from locale to locale.

Exposure is the real reason for it moving around between major markets. It's also the result of the quid pro quo arrangement of teams joining the conference. The ACC needed the money from major markets (NYC, Boston, Chicago [ND], etc.) and in turn they have the tournament close to those places.

the ACC tournament clearly does not have the luster it once had for a ton of reasons we have all mentioned, but I think we need to set a much better rotation to give the tournament an identity. The identity of the tournament should mirror the identity of the league which is central to the Carolinas, and the Southeast. I love NYC as much as anybody and take trips their most years, but can say that the ACC tourney has no place in NYC more than once every 7 years.
