...and little did Dana Altman know we would unleash our secret weapon --- the missed FT!

stuff
- I'm gonna keep this mostly to the keys, since I'll be on the road tomorrow, but seriously? What a way to pull one out. Credit part of that to one of Dean Smith's old inventions --- the tip-out. He always preached that if you can only get a hand on an offensive miss, tip it out instead of going over someone's back, and on FTs he always stationed a Guard at the top of the key for the very purpose of being the recipient. Somewhere Dean was smiling at Theo's effort and doing what he was taught by Roy.

- And Kennedy's last Offenive Rebound? Son, that was just "want-to". He said in that first-person article he would do whatever it took to win. Well, he did. Who'd a-thunk back when he was battling injuries last season we'd ever see that lightning quick move to get inside position from the big fella?

- Speaking of Kennedy, what can you say other than MVP? 25 and 14 with 3 Steals... and not the least bit cowed by Oregon's shot-blockers.

- Buckets was Buckets and made some big vintage runners and actually made his FTs

- Important contribution from Nate to spark our run to reclaim the lead in the first half, and a sneaky-important minute from Stilman to break the press and then force a TO on the other end. Theo was an undersized beast on the boards, especially considering foul trouble forced us to go "small" for long stretches, and made some hellacious passes under much duress.

- Gawd we had some miserable shooting stretches --- at one point in the first half we were 6/23. Yikes. Oregon was rattled early and we did not take advantage. 36.8% for a game will getcha beat.

Keys
- Defensive intensity: We played some tough D and forced them to play one-on-one (they only had 7 Assists total), held them under 40% shooting, and I love how Roy had JB sneak in for some delayed doubles on their Big which caused a couple of TOs. At one point well into the game they had only 1 more FG than TO.

- Transition: Our defense got us some transition ops but their best defense for that was to just foul us when we got out on the Break. Sometimes it got called... often it didn't. We did manage 30 pts on the Secondary but came up empty in transition more than I would like to see.

- FTs: After making all our first-half FTs, good googly-moogly, we missed figgin' 8 in the second half alone . Meanwhile on the other end, FTs literally kept them in the game down the stretch. When you shoot 28 and you make damned near 90% that tends to happen.

- JB aggression: Guys, as I feared, Joel was nowhere near 100% --- not even in the same zip code. I had a moment of hope when he splashed that first 3, but then I watched him struggle to back-pedal or slide on D for the first couple of possessions. That part loosened up for him, but the JB burst and explosion was just not there and he didn't have his legs inder him. But damned if he didn't still get after it --- kept driving the ball whilst getting mugged and took one helluva pounding tonight. That was important though, because it still created points on put-backs and FTs. Amazingly Dog played 35 minutes and did not come off the floor except for a minute blow in the second half. #Warrior My next fear is how he'll feel tomorrow...

Welp... somehow the guys reached inside and found a way to win. Considering they matched us on the glass tonight, which usually spells trouble, that is impressive. These guys have character. Kennedy was key, and he'll have to be again Monday against Gonzaga's behemoth. Gonzaga is solid and good, and will be quite a challenge, especially with our PG being walking wounded. I just don't think we can afford another sub-40% shooting night. And considering what we're likely to face, we'd better make our FTs when we get 'em. They may be a precious commodity...

Yeah, unfortunately the guy I wanted on monday(Valentine), was used last night.
And I think we both suspect who is on deck for tomorrow.

Well said gary, love this team! So much heart and want-to!
Yep, couldn't be any prouder if we won the title.

I am praying that Isaiah will muster the courage to come up big, it's his last opportunity to do so for the Heels, the biggest game of their lives. Come on big fella.

Feeling nervous about tomorrow. We really need to play a clean game, no poor shooting nights or sloppy halves. Gonzaga matches (eclipses really) our size inside, plays smart basketball and good defense, and can shoot.

No doubt it will take a great team effort. Just wish Joel was healthy, I have seen more than one title worthy UNC team derailed by extremely untimely injuries to key players. Oh well, you go into battle with what you have.

Roy started the game exactly how I wanted him to - having Isaiah take the ball right at Bell.

Unfortunately, Isaiah had his worst offensive game of the season and missed his first 5, after which we tried a different strategy. He finished 1-12 and with his lowest ORtg since his freshman year.

That's the last time Roy will take my advice.

Watching those opening plays, I was reminded of the game when Dean had Larry Miller drive the baseline against Lew Alcindor for the first 3 or 4 plays.

We are going to need a MUCH better game from Isaiah on Monday.

Kennedy had a massive game. We've all been wondering how he'd perform if he could stay healthy. Now we know. I hope it helps him land a nice spot in the NBA.

I worry how Kennedy will do on Monday. Other than maybe Anya, he has little experience against bigger guys. Kennedy has much better footwork than Karnowski, but it's tough to give up 3-4 inches and 40 pounds when you are used to using your height and weight to advantage. Then again, I don't imagine Karnowski has played against too many guys like Kennedy, either. It will be a big test for both big guys.

I hope Berry can dig deep and give us one of those mid-season performances that had a lot of us worried he might go pro this year. We know he's hurting. And we don't want him to harm himself, but I hope he can come through for us. We're going to need it.

Theo had seemed to be backsliding some recently. But not yesterday. He didn't shoot well, but was anywhere from good to awesome in other ways. We'll need that again, and hopefully with better shooting.

One of the things that made it tough yesterday was that when Isaiah wasn't having a good game, neither Luke nor Tony stepped up to make up for it. Even if Isaiah does well on Monday, we are going to need good games from both Luke and Tony. Gonzaga brings some excellent tall talent off the bench. I watched some of the Gonzaga-SC game and that kid Collins is impressive. He's 7'0, 230 and gave them 14 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks off the bench. Ouch. And they have another 6'10 guy they can bring in for spot duty (2 points, 2 rebounds and no mistakes in 7 minutes).

Zags interior d looked real tough against scar. But scar got a lot of open looks on 3's and couldnt hit. I think that will be the diff. If we can please GOD find someone to hit some open 3's we will have a chance. If we come out cold again it will be a long night.

Many of Isiah's shots were very very close. A few were pretty bad. He was also fouled a number of times with no call. Dude shot 12 times and did not get even 1 trip to the FT line. Bogus.

I hope our speed may be the answer against their leviathans. If Berry was 100% I would have no doubt. He isn't, so we will just have to grit it out with great defense and scoring wherever/however we can.

Gonzaga will be our toughest test of the year. Their bigs are well big and present a challenge. In saying that, look at the stat lines from the South Carolina game. South Carolina doesn't have shit in the post and the big nasties of the zags didn't exactly rip them to shreds. I'm more than confident in our bigs ability to get it done tomorrow night. Go heels!

True dat. With a healthy Dog I'd be feeling pretty confident. We hafta adjust and tough it out.

No one is stopping this UNC title train. We WILL cut the nets tomorrow night.
I hope so, Bleed. I suppose one game doesn't really have an impact on the next game, but I just get a sense like we have a good offensive game that is due.
When you shoot under 37% for the game,
three starters go 5/34 ( <15%) representing half of the team's shots
you go the last 5:53 with zero (0) FGs and go 6/13 from the line including 4 straight misses....
and still you win... that is not just fortunate..... its nearly a miracle!

I feel like we've not only dodged 3 bullets so to speak (Ark, UK, and Oregon) - Oregon was like dodging a shotgun blast at point blank range.

Along any title game run you just have to find a way to scratch out a win in a game or two you should / could easily lose. Well, we did that against Oregon and Ark.... (against UK too, but they are just darn talented and full strength so that was more expected).....

I am really hoping for, wouldn't be surprised to see, a much better offensive performance on Monday night. I don't think Gonzage will play the mystery defenses like Oregon did that made us look paralyzed for most of the first half.

I know Zags have beaten some good teams early in the year. Truth is they have had a pretty soft path to the title game:
16 SDSU
8 NW (weakest of the 8's?)
4 WV (weakest of the 4's?)
11 X
7 SC

We faced
16 TxSo
8 Ark #3 in major conf
4 Butler (2nd in major conf, beat Nova 2x)
2 UK #1 in major conf, #1 or 2 overall at beginning of season, winners of 14 straight before Heels game)
3 Oregon #1 in major conf reg season

.....and we won what I still think is the top regular season conference by two full games.

I believe we've just faced better competition, before and during this tourney, and are on a mission to finish the job.

One game. Anything can happen. If we have Berry and Jackson on, we will win by 30. If not, we have to hope they don't have too much of an advantage in the 3 game.
