...and briefly, this was about what I wanted to see vs what I actually saw.

Look, after the most recent debacle, I'll get the negative stuff out of the way first, which pretty much encompassed the whole second half:

- the encouraging defensive effort from the first half went south.

- seemingly everyone forgot how to finish at the rim

- Press Offense execution was pathetic. I dunno how many times I've posted this, but the Carolina Press-O is the best ever invented. It's beautiful in geometric elegance but you can teach it to a Middle School team. Show 1-3-1 to the ball, hit the Big in the middle of that, who catches and immediately looks opposite. All ya hafta do is make crisp flashes and crisp passes and don't hesitate and the worst you're gonna get is a Secondary Break opportunity. We did none of that well.

OK, anyway... after a slow start, there were actually some things to be encouraged by in the first half. But it took a while --- in the opening minutes we got a Fast Break opportunity in which RJ put his head down, ignored the easy loop pass to Garcia and proceeded to get his shot blocked --- we cleaned up the miss, but here we go again. Midway thru the half however, some things started to look a bit better:

- Our 20 defense looked a bit more like 22 with better effort and more challenge in the passing lanes. Also saw improved baseline help.

- I'm also noticing an emphasis on blocking out, which is helping our defensive rebounding.

- Most encouragingly, midway thru the first half we seemed to rediscover Carolina offensive principals. We moved the ball with the pass instead of the dribble, pitched ahead, and actually swung the rock on the Secondary. The resulting good shot opportunities predictably followed.

I'll say it straight-up, this spell of actual Carolina basketball happened with Caleb at the point, who was making a concerted effort to space the floor and facilitate (I would invite doubters to go re-watch that stretch). That just needs to be the default. RJ is a scorer, but as a PG it's like Nate Britt all over again, i.e., he's never seen a dribble he won't take.

Finally, Leaky did some nice things tonight, but son, you're 6'8 --- stop finessing everything at the danged rim. And I hate to say it, but Dawson is just soft at this stage. He needs to use the additional practice time coming up to learn to finish from the block.

Anyway, I wished for more, but at least there were moments. That said, between now and Dec. 1 we need to reset and try to figure out what we're gonna be about as a team...

Gary…..we are just 6 games into the season and this team is just exhausting me. You are point on in your assessment….no more to be said.

As a matter of fact, you could have started and finished with that last point you made.
“we need to reset and try to figure out what we're gonna be about as a team”

Gary, it doesn’t look like Coach Davis is employing Coach Williams’s fast pace that beats the defense down the court before they set up. I thought it was genius. Is that true?

Thanks for your summary, Gary.

Let me begin my comments on the game and our season to date with a few statistics.

We shot 49% for the game w/ 50% from 3 w/ 84.6% on FT's.
UNCA shot 26% for the game w/ 26% from 3 w/ 71.4 % on FT's
We out rebounded UNCA - 51-29.
We had 15 assists to UNCA's - 8.
We committed 18 TO's to their 7.
We won the game by 19 points.

Generally speaking, with a stat line like above, without watching the game you would think we won by 40+. What happened?

TO's were the main culprit, as UNCA scored 19 points off our 18 TO's, and keep in mind this is the 3rd consecutive game that we have given up 19 points on TO's. Then let's add in missed layups and easy baskets and you get results like those mentioned.

Oh, by the way..., this team ranks 324th out 354 DIV 1 schools in TO's forced. That's a very telling stat and maybe a clue as to how effective or ineffective our defense is at this point so far after 6 games. I'll let you decide that for yourselves. I just know what it tells me.

I happened to glance at the scoreboard with 6 min. and change in the 1st half, we were up 32-13 (re: 19-point lead) and we played the rest of this game just about even.

Not.... good....at.... all...., folks, against a Southern Conference team that has maybe a couple of players that might see the end of our bench.

Hubert and staff have 8 days to prepare, and I know they are working to chip away at the issues this team has that prevents them from being a real force this season.

I'm pulling for him and the team.

I can't grasp what the body language means. Caleb seems to be pouting most of the time and the rest of the team seems to not want to show any emotions-after good plays or bad plays! I don't know if they are being cool, worn out or what but they just don't seem to enjoy the highs or get upset with the lows.

+6 in the second half against UNCA should give everybody a clear picture of where this team is and what to expect unless major changes take place with the players and the staff!

There was an article I think I read that stated that NBA scouts say they hate watching our team because everyone on the team is selfish, and I agree. So many times they don't swing the ball around with the pass. Fast breaks don't even exist because whether it is 4 or 5 on 1 it's still gonna be one guy not passing and going it alone.

On one hand, no one passes that when they get a pass they look surprised. On the other hand, it's hard to pass to people who miss layups and dunks and stuff from point blank also. Leaky missing that wide open play that one time was insane.

Idk. This team is not very good though.

...and when you follow up our game and watch Gonzaga's defense smother UCLA, you see the
glaring discrepancy between where we are defensively and how far we are from being even average.
We have issues that need to be addressed without delay.

I feel the same way when watching them play.

We’re not in the same stratosphere as Gonzaga. They are what Carolina use to be. Today, they would beat us by 20+ points.

I guess I’m just a glass half full kinda guy. Last year we would’ve scored 50 or less in these two losses. At least we can score this year. Work on defense and keep getting better. We were literally in the Purdue game til the end.
Does this team need work? Yes. Do we have time? Yes. Not panic time yet. So chill out and enjoy a game.

Maybe they just don’t like playing with each other……when everybody is jacking up shots and not passing the ball…it’s hard to be happy

I hear ya, but I wouldn't put it quite that way. We're just not consistently executing and/or carrying out the Secondary Break consistently. If you look back at that good stretch in the first half I referenced, we actually went through the iterations and swung the ball and got good looks in the process.

As you mentioned, the Secondary is the heart of Dean's inventions in that is pressures defenses before they're set up, even without a numbers advantage, or even off made shots --- and Roy's most significant contribution to that legacy was expanding the options off of it.

It is November, we have some clear areas that need improvement. Working in a somewhat new system, with a new coach, new key faces from other programs.

The dee will be very challenging as quite a few on this roster have been subpar on that side of the ball wherever they have played.

Lot of work, with a lot of potential. Buckle your seat belts for some bumps in the road, part of journey.

Well, there it is. Without stirring anything up, I've heard and noticed that there are some chemistry issues --- and hell, all ya gotta do is listen to the postgame comments to glean that. Garcia seems to have the hardest time right now, in that on one hand he looks frustrated when he doesn't get the rock (that lack of passing thing), but on the other hand, he has become a "black hole" when he does get it --- so that whole deal can become self-perpetuating.

The solution to all that is pretty simple: Return to Carolina basketball. As I said, we did it for that first-half stretch that mostly accounted for our working lead. Everyone was getting touches and there was no useless pounding the ball. Unfortunately, as @Tarheel75 pointed out, it went south after that and we basically played them even when reverting back to bad habits.

Being totally honest, it doesn't hafta be that hard. The staff needs to start by not overthinking what has, and will always, work --- and hammering those principals into the players --- new and old.

I love the fact that Manek (should be team captain) called out the four McD AAs, stating that "if you've got four of them on the team, you should be pretty good". I think we'll be OK this year, but we're not gonna set the conference on fire. We're still pretty young and as stated above we don't look like we enjoy playing with each other.
Let's watch them grow ... if half of them don't transfer out then they should be pretty decent next year.

It will take some time, hard, consistent work on both ends, and some game experience with those principles. We have a couple guys that have been long time defensive targets. Those type habits do not vanish quickly.

I hope he called himself out as well. He has always been a target on defense, always. Lead by example big fella. 👏

Actually he didn't ..... he said he thought he played "pretty well". LOL.
I didn't see the comments, but that could be very troublesome. One of the quicker ways to lose a locker room is to publicly point fingers and take shots in the media at teammates, especially while saying I'm all good.

True - except it'd be 30-40 unless they called off the dogs. They could've beaten UCLA by 25+ last night, and UCLA is way better than us. And Zags would blow the doors off of Tennessee who just beat us by 20.

Like Gary said…just return to Carolina basketball….ball movement…easy pass…play defense with pride…play for each other…etc.
In this day and age, it amazes me that these kids think that if they score a lot of points…nba scouts will notice them. But if they would look at recent drafts…guys who averaged 7 points a game are going in the first round. Carolina under Dean put a lot of players in the NBA because they knew a UNC player had the fundamentals to play in the NBA.

Go back to the basics….and these players will see that team success will bring individual success. It’s like a job interview….they want to know how you will fit on the team….they don’t want selfish ball hogs who won’t pass the ball.

Want to improve your draft stock? Go deep into the Big Dance playing the right way.

I found nothing [painful about watching a win! I did see plenty of improvement and plenty of room for further improvement! It appeared to me that the team was on the right track. Just need to continue on the present track and keep focusing on consistent effort, teamwork, and valuing the ball!

……and playing unselfish….which means passing the ball to a teammate when wide open….giving up the ball on the fast break instead of throwing up wild shot
