RED ZONE PLAY CALLING

Was it Fedora or The O Coordinator, or both, that fell out of the idiot tree and hit every limb in the red zone...When you have a monster runningback begging for the ball and proven success running the football with two downs to get to paydirt....One would think you would keep hammering with that safe effective method.....but guess what......the powers that be couldn't see the light and thought they needed to be a balanced run and pass team that was capable of scoring in the redzone on the arm and decision making of one Marquis Williams.....maybe that dog hunts the first half but when the game is on the line and fading then there is only the choice of Hood running the football.....Fedora is ultimately responsible after making very foolish choices...

What was even the point of getting Hood over ND? So he can watch Fedora air it out and carry the ball 6 times? How many tackles dos he need to break tonight?

Our coaching staff needs an overhaul. Keep Gene and tell the rest to hit the road. Go Heels!

That's the truth. I find it pathetic that Hood wasn't in the game on 1st and goal. Plain pathetic.
Exactly.....just watching him on the sideline and seeing that number 34 I couldn't help but think about a young Tyler Rose.....I think he will be the next Earl Campbell........Fedora what are you doing....sad......

This was such a winnable game! We finally have a defense that has a pulse and our play calling in the red zone loses the game. We can blame the qb, but I don't think he selected the plays. He's a senior and by now someone should know for all his skills, he does not have the the ability to improvise inside the 20. We need better thinking from the sideline.

Well, that game just about sums up my 42yr frustration with Tar Heel football. We never seem to be able to get over the hump. Frustrating. Those were some of the worst red zone int's I think have ever seen!

Looked to me like the ball was thrown right to the linebacker.....why did he not think he had to have lift with his target in the back of the endzone both times......the answer is he was scared of overthrowing his target which he does when he gets excited.......

The sad thing about the redzone thing is. You put Hood in on first down from the nine. You do t have to throw it to him. But with him in there. They would have to respect the run. Therefor holding the lbs closer to the LOS. Which causes bigger holes in the defense. But what do I know. I don't get paid 500000 a year

Can someone tell me what fedora is talking about when the ask him why hood did not get touches in the red zone, because we were behind the chains.
Was it not first and goal from the nine and hood never touched the ball again.

I know you all are pissed and I would be also but those were execution INTs ... not play calling ... that QB couldnt make a WR screen throw .... let alone a touch pass over someone ... that was all bad QB play ... otherwise UNC wins by 2 TDs easily

Fedora is really showing his inadequacies more and more. They are becoming glaring inadequacies, at that. He is in WAY, WAY over his head.

I think the Chizik addition is going to pay-off well. But, Fedora is just a drag on the program. He always will be, it seems.

Just wondering but does Fedora call the plays?

The "Hat" asks his players to play SMART, should he not attempt to coach SMART. All night long as we are gaining yards up the middle he stops pounding the ball and puts the game back on Williams arm. Maybe it was just nerves or playing in his home town but Williams was more than awful tonight.

I was proud of the defense for the improvement they have made, however some of that improvement was a young, inexperienced SC offense. The D played well enough to win.

Hood needs the ball at least 20 - 25 times a game. He needs to be able to work up a sweat and punish the defenders with his running style. Mitch needs to play some if Williams is going to play like that. This game is exactly what being a Tar Heel football fan is about. I can handle losing if we do not give a game away, but that is what we did tonight.

That was not a very good SC defense and our horrible play calling and QB made them look good. Simply amazing how Williams kept missing wide open Heels, but kept finding wide open Cocks. Even on the last interception he does not even give our guy a chance to come down with a ball.

I lay this game 100% on the Hat. There are going to be nights when your QB is off. It is your job as the head coach to understand this and make adjustments. No excuses. I was so ticked I did not listen to the press conference, did the Hat shoulder any blame?

Well, I picked UNC to score 35pts yesterday, and they would have if not for 3 picks in the Redzone with 2 of those in the endzone...Not to mention, the Pick-6 that was dropped...

As for the positives, Hood is a stud, and needs to be used as such...The kicking game was better, and the Defense was light years better than last year IMO....That was a tremendous goal line stand late in the game...The "D" gave us a chance in the end, but the stage was just too big for Marquise Williams and Fedora as both failed miserably in the opener..... A game that was there for the taking instead turned into a Debbie Downer in the end...

A buddy turned to me after that last MW int, and said, "He threw the ball right too the defender....Maybe the fix is in, and MW knows he's not going to the NFL because he looked bought-off tonight"....

Watching the game, it was hard not to think that to be honest!

I also thought the red zone coaching was off....you can run the ball, run it.

Hood can pick up yardage better than about 99% of the college backs that I have seen.

I said on the prediction thread one of the keys if UNC was going to win was Fedora not to outthink himself like he has consistently done. Well guess what, that is exactly what he did. Enjoy it Fedora, you have 11 more games to coach at UNC. Just pathetic, everyone on the planet sees what you can't.

Fedora is in over his head. He is apparently married to his scheme and therefore can't adjust to the situation. Why he has no power package for use inside the 10 is a mystery. We will see the guy who SHOULD be our head coach when A&T comes to town.

Totally understand that and agree; however, it is a play calling gaff if you see that your SR. QB is crapping it up while your running backs are getting the job done. It really isn't that hard of a decision. There is no one on this planet other than Fedora and Litrell who didn't understand. They could have ran all day and let that set up the pass. Instead, they wanted to pass, pass, pass even when your running backs were the most dominate thing on the field.

And don't forget also on that drive. Why do you throw a fade to Switzer? I can see you doing it with Davis, Hollins, or Bug. At least they are over 6 foot.

I did not like how the "Hat" through his offensive coaches under the bus after the game. According to his comment, maybe he is not calling the plays.

He said last year he let his OC call plays. Clearly he shouldnt

I'm afraid this season will be like last season, only this year the defense will be better.

The head coach is lacking. I'm wondering if maybe they got Chizik in there first and maybe kept Fedora around to see how he pans-out this year. Then they may just put Chizik in as HC after this season. Fedora can't cut it. He was a gamble. Gambles sometimes pay, sometimes don't pay.

As a Southern Miss fan I'm glad you guys took this less than knowledgable said to be football coach off our hands. He played out the talent of our previous coach and left us with nothing having to rebuild, again thank you guys for taking him.

it wasn't just the offense, when congratulated on the defense he stated that they needed to have given up only 12 points.

For a team to average 500 yards and 40 points a game last season that returned 10 starters on the offense including your 3800+ passing QB, the offense is not the problem. Our defense has just DRASTICALLY improved. UNC will win the coastal division if GT doesn't. Bank on it. Your defense has drastically improved as well, Chizik was a homerun hire.

Corrrect. The 2 INTs in the end zone were the same play. MW just failed 100% on both plays. Most ACC QBs, probably including Trubisky, would have completed at least 1 of those passes and not thrown an INT.

The tl;dr version of what I posted on premium: coming into the game, Marquise had attempted 87 passes in the opponent's red zone with 20 TDs and 0 INTs. Zero.

What happened last night was a complete aberration. I understand the argument in favor of running the ball, but I don't necessarily think throwing it was a bad choice. The execution was simply putrid.

The biggest problem that I seen was that MW could have ran both times that he threw interceptions.....Last year, he probably would have taken off, but the emphasis by Fedora and Littrell in the offseason to keep MW in the pocket, and keep him healthy, may have also cost us the game against South Carolina because he looked indecisive both times that he threw INTs into the endzone?

MW needs to be a dual-threat QB if this offense is going to be as explosive as it can be IMO!
