I think they do care about winning, I think they care very much and is reason why they want to cluster at schools like duke and Ky. They are looking to play with other big time talents and play with and against these guys so they know and strongly value their talent. More experienced players, they do not play much with and frankly, may tend to under value the ability of experienced teams because their players were not one & done level talents. So they feel they can win more if they cluster together with other big timers and in doing so increase their NBA stock.
But the truth is just opposite to their perception, the clustering of 1&D kids does not increase the chances for getting that natty, playing with more experienced players does that. The 1&D guys do not want to come off the bench, they want to start and be featured because they believe that will as well show case their NBA value and increase their draft stock and they find that harder to do on deep experienced teams than on teams with a ton of holes left by early entry.
Look at Tony, truth is Tony was no where close to being NBA ready as an incoming frosh or frankly as a soph in college (IMO) but playing on the Natty winning team, coming off the bench while more experienced upper classmen lead the way, he got the NBA 1st round selection spot and that natty ring.

Yeah, Lord knows I'm all for poking fun at our neighbors down 15-501, but Reddick has done well. He and Mark Price are the two best shooters I've ever seen in the ACC.
As much as I hate to admit, because I really despised Redick when he was a dookie, he really did transform himself into a solid role player/starter in the NBA.

I think kids today want to win just like kids from past years. The difference is, kids today don't want to work for it. They want it NOW!! Gone are the days of young fellas coming into a program and being taken under the wing of a junior or senior. Gone are the days of guys earning their time on the court. These guys come to a school and expect to play major minutes right away. They don't want to come and contribute to the team culture that's been in place for years. They want to come in and be the reason a team wins. There is no "for the greater good" mentality anymore with today's kids. It's pretty disappointing.
Allen Crabbe and Evan Fournier will both make over $50 million in the next few years. I'm not shitting on Redick but apparently if you have a pulse and have heard the word "basketball" at some point in your life, you too can make millions.
Redick has become a nice player. A lot of Heels fans doubted him being a consistent pro because of his size. But the NBA is all about specialties now. Redick is a terrific shooter and he's become an admirable defender. I mean, he's no Kyrie Irving on defense but he plays hard and puts in the effort. I never questioned his ability to stay in the league. I knew his shooting would keep him around.
