I would respectfully request that Hubert face the media to explain what happened this season in general and how the decision was made not to compete in the NIT. I believe the donors and supporters of Carolina deserve to know what went down. If a player feels uncomfortable letting the fan base know what their vote was then I don’t want them on a team playing for a University I’ve given so much to. Hubert please come out and honestly tell us what transpired.

Here, I'll do it for him:

Not going to happen, well……not the way you want it to happen. There may be some specifics that leak, but it will not be from Coach Davis.

You will probably never get anything from him, but I'm guessing about 90% of the questions in the ACC basketball kickoff (or whatever it's called) will be about the decision.

And another example of the tail wagging the dog in Chapel Hill. This should never be a player decision. The coach, and administration, should decide what is best for the profile of the university. Then go with that decision

If you've listened to press conferences all year, it will go something like this...

"We just need to play harder, really nothing to change, just need a few things to go our way. Proud of our kids for competing. We will work to get better." rinse and repeat

Best post of the year...

HD at a press conference, he is going to cry allot. He will tell you how they put in the work, and then will tell you something personal from the players lives this year, and then cry again. He will redirect to Bacot, and what a great kid he is, and cry again. He will tell you about Dean Smith and the memories he wants for players, and cry again.

Black man to black man, I would tell HD he needs to grow a pair, his Vanilla style isolates him from allot of support he needs right now. He would do himself a favor if he talked about what happened, but nobody wants to see him crying for an hour...

He can’t hide behind the PR dept forever. May not even be his choice. I would imagine at least some folks with pull have tried to pry info from the department. But If he gets asked next fall he will prob just dodge it and say he is focused on the current year

100% agree. A player vote is not sufficient. This great public university deserves better.

Why do the players get a say at all. You don't allow your players to quit if you have to play 5 waterboys you do it. We had a poll recently asking how much time Hubert should be givin. Personally i was rooting like hell for Hubert after this move my mind has completely changed. Hubert's next press conference needs to be him stepping down. Everyone associated with this needs to move on. I've loved this program for 40 years roughly and this has shaken my faith in the entire athletic program. I've never been more disappointed in the school i love.

Apparently Styles said that Hubert made the decision to not attend the NIT. I didn't listen to it but it was supposedly said in his "Tuesdays with Trez" podcast. Styles apparently wanted to play.

Styles said he wanted to play and that he "found out" we weren't going.

That doesn't sound like there was a vote.

I hope other players come forward.

To be fair to Hubert, if there was a vote, he could well feel it is inappropriate for him to reveal how people voted.

That said, let's get as much clarity as we can. Hubert can do his part by stating unequivocally whether there was or wasn't a vote among all players.

I'd also love to know what our assistant coaches felt (and currently feel) about all of this (the NIT and everything else) - but I don't expect that to be forthcoming, unless maybe some get the boot.

That would go against all of the reporting. Everyone has said there was a vote. Either way, I would love to know how Hubert justified that to Styles. How he says he cares about what these guys want, but then takes away a chance to play.

I'm assuming the players who wanted to play were told to GFY.
The were probably told to enter the portal and find a school that cares.

Kidding aside, if you are a coach interviewing someone in the portal, surely you ask "why are you leaving?"

Speaking as someone who did some hiring in a previous life, I can tell you that prospective hires who bitch about their former employer can quickly talk themselves out of a job - whether or not they are right about the conditions they want to leave.

So . . . what will these players be saying? I'd love to hear what they really think, but I doubt we'll hear much of what they really think. Clearly Styles wanted to play in the NIT, but notice he didn't say anything negative about anyone or the program. Is that because there is nothing to say, or because he's playing it safe?

I've only heard posters here say that. Not saying you are wrong, but are there links to players or coaches actually saying those words?

So far Styles's version is the only thing I've seen directly attributed to an actual player (or staff).
AJ posted an article about it and I've seen a couple of other reports about it. Nothing directly from the players.

I didn't see AJ's article. Is that on the free side?

Never mid, I see it. I'll read it now.

OK, here's the only line on this issue

"The kids didn’t really want to play, and that’s fine."

Nothing about a vote. Nothing about how AJ knows this. Not even a mention whether "the kids" means "all" or even "most" of the kids.

To me, it's still an open question. Styles's first-hand report carries more weight with me unless/until we get conflicting first-hand reports.

There are other good points in AJ's article. Mainly that quitting early provides a headstart on self-evaluation, planning for the future, and working the portal. Fair points. But does playing in the NIT preclude any of that?

There you go, sir. The list of people who NEED to know is very short:
Staff
Players
Team Managers
Bubba Cunningham
Kevin Guskiewicz
You forgot one group.

Fans who think this was a bad decision that tarnishes the Carolina brand.

You can ignore them, for sure. But they can ignore you, in turn.

Think of this like the news cycle.

The former headline was "Carolina Sucks."

The new headline is "Carolina Has No Pride."

In the news world the new headline can make the old headline fade from memory. But in this context, the new headline just adds to the dissatisfaction.

If we went to the NIT, we would still suck. But we would have been holding our heads up and moving forward. That beats slinking away.

Doesn't sound like everyone was ok with the decision. I'm sure some will write it off because it's coming from parents, but I find it hard to believe they would all be lying.

I’m sure Bubba and HD will continue to hide and let this fade away. The lack of leadership is really disappointing.

I was told only washed out clowns were saying it was a vote. Are the parents of our players now joining AJ and I as washed out clowns? I hear Puff's dad is cool, I'll buy him a shot at our next meeting.

if the players don't really want to play, that will be crystal clear on this court. you can lead a horse to water etc. etc. even if the players try to compete, it will be clear that their heart's not in it. better to save us all the embarrassment and stay home.

Their respect for the game and university speaks volumes about tgrit effort this season.

Not playing in the NIT is a disgrace.

I understand that I have no right to know how all of this actually went down ... but the whole cloak-and-dagger, super-secret, conflicting stories thing does not look good. Hopefully this will all fade away and we'll be back to something that resembles Carolina basketball next season. Go Heels !!!

Steve Kirschner's comments tell more of a story than folks realize. For folks that know Kirsch, he's pretty cut and dry. The fact that he's put a comment out there that strategically straddles the fence and that being the only comment from the athletic department is telling. Hubert simply has a program run afoul by chaos and inconsistency at every turn. He's in over his head, whether some of you want to admit it or not. It's one thing to struggle with on court decisions early, but he's a grown man with professional experience so his inability to run a tight ship from an administrative/communication perspective is a bad look. We better start lining up our next basketball coach. Hubert has lost the trust of more than he realizes after this debacle.

Why would anyone be surprised? “Players coaches” rarely succeed in this game. They’re too concerned with being liked by all and therefore don’t command the respect necessary to run a program. Hubert seems to be a really nice guy. Possibly too nice to make the hard decisions, bench a kid when he’s a detriment to the team, etc.
