Melissa is one of my all time favorite tunes... RIP Gregg.
This last few years have been taking a toll on the greats. Sheesh.
I have followed The Allman's from the beginning , the tragic deaths of Duane and Berry , the marriage to Cher , the drug busts , the break ups , solo careers , "Live at Fillmore East" is my absolute favorite live album ever. Thanks Gregg....The Road Goes on Forever..............
Marrying Cher shows poor judgement but how was he a shitty person? I like some of allman bros. songs but don't know too much about their personal details.
Here is a pretty good interview with Gregg by Howard Stern. Stern doesn't ask kiss-ass questions (like him or not). This was in 2012, a year or so after his liver transplant, I think. I saw where he died from complications of liver cancer, and that developed from delayed effects of the transplant. Anyway, the interview is pretty good. You can tell that Allman is a bit slower and more deliberate. He seems like a man that, back in his younger years, when he was more physically capable, could be set-off and get really mean. We all have that trigger, of course. His life and experience probably didn't help to defuse that. His father was murdered when he was very young. The murderer contacted him later in life from prison. I think Allman was peaceful at heart (I think all people are), but he had some demons and pain that he struggled with. He talks about some of it in the interview.
Gregg Allman was considering being a dental surgeon and was a valedictorian in junior high school.
his drug use was the stuff of legend. Course with that comes the usual a hole behavior. His mgr saved him from an od once, greg thanked him by testifying against him and putting him away for 75 yrs. I read once that cher blamed herself for his drug use. Seems reasonable.
According to the manager himself, the evidence was already there to lock him up. Scooter told Gregg to testify and save himself because he was going to get screwed either way.
A lot of musicians back then fell into heroin addiction. And they still are. If you've ever played music on a loud stage then you know how hard it is just to get to sleep afterwards. My ears usually ring for hours. Its a crappy feeling when your body is totally exhausted but your brain is still humming. I'm sure a needle fixes that right up in no time... He paid the price with Hepatitis
The Allman Brothers and the Beatles were perhaps my favorite bands of all time. I was very saddened to hear of Gregg's passing. Like Glenn Frey, I will miss him greatly.
