Rivals’ release Monday of its newest ranking of the Top 250 football prospects in the class of 2021 generated quite a reaction from North Carolina fans.

Many questioned the process and why certain current UNC commits weren’t rated higher compared to competing recruiting network 247Sports’ rankings. Some fans noted Rivals has some prospects rated higher than 247Sports.

An example: Many fans wanted to know why UNC commit Keeshawn Silver was not among the 250 and also still rated as a 3-star prospect while 247Sports has him rated much higher. Some also asked about Power Echols and Ra Ra Dillworth, both of whom some fans expected would rise in the rankings, citing recent articles written by Rivals’ regional and national analysts suggesting upgrades were coming.

Much of the dissent was directed at THI, which as part of the Rivals network posted the newest rankings on our front page as we always do when new rankings are released. We also explained that a significant element of Rivals’ process is in-person evaluation, and with nearly all of the spring RCS camps cancelled because of the shutdown, Rivals was limited in the number of prospects it could see in person this spring. In addition, Rivals’ on-site evaluation opportunities include The Opening, team camps and 7-on-7 tournaments. As a result, some prospects that may have jumped had Rivals been able to evaluate them stayed put.

And it should be noted that some of the articles people referenced stated that some players could get an upgrade once Rivals would see them in person again. That hasn’t happened, obviously.

Given the reaction by some fans focusing mainly on Silver and suggesting there’s regularly a considerable discrepancy in Rivals’ ranking of UNC commitments than other services, we at THI decided to dig into this to find out what the numbers actually are. Below is a complete list of what we uncovered.

Our research only includes UNC players that have committed since Mack Brown was hired.

Note: Rivals does not rank players nationally past its Rivals250 and typically only includes 3-star prospects and up in state rankings with the exception of some smaller states. So, with 247Sports going much deeper in individual national rankings and state rankings, there are cases in which 247Sports ranked a player in his state that Rivals did not rank.

Here’s the breakdown:

*63 prospects have committed to UNC since Mack Brown (classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021) was hired but one was a JC transfer (Ray Vohasek), so he’s not included: 30 are ranked higher by Rivals, 1 player is ranked the same, 10 are not ranked by Rivals but four of them are above the Rivals cutoff point in 247Sports’ rankings, so 25 are rated higher by 247Sports. So, Rivals 30, 247Sports 25.

*Class of 2021 (14 commitments so far): 6 players are rated higher by Rivals while 8 are rated higher by 247Sports.

*Class of 2020 (25 signed prospects): 15 were ranked higher by Rivals, 1 was ranked the same, 4 players were unranked by Rivals but higher on 247Sports than the Rivals cutoff point, so 247Sports has 7 players rated higher. So, it’s 15-7 Rivals for 2020.

*Class of 2019 (24 signed prospects): 9 were ranked higher by Rivals, 8 were ranked by 247Sports but six were unranked by Rivals of which two were higher on 247Sports than Rivals’ cutoff point giving 247Sports 10. So, it’s 10-9 for 247Sports.

*12 of UNC’s commits are either currently rated among the Rivals250 or were in the final Rivals250 in 2019 and 2020. Nine are rated higher by Rivals and three are rated higher by 247Sports.

Individual Comparisons

Note: State rankings followed by national position rankings – Rivals first and then 247Sports

% = Rivals doesn’t include as many players in state rankings, but four of the 10 UNC commits not ranked by Rivals were ranked higher in 247Sports’ state rankings than where Rivals cut off its lists for those years. Example: Cayden Baker (2020) is not among the 100 prospects Rivals rated in Florida but he’s No. 41 in the state in 247Sports’ rankings. The six players Rivals doesn’t rank that are lower in 247Sports’ rankings than the Rivals cutoff point are not factored in this evaluation.

NOTE: Rivals updated its national position rankings Wednesday for offensive players, it will update defensive players Thursday.

NOTE: Rivals will update its state rankings Friday.

The only players that had their ratings changed in this update are the ones that Rivals have new, verifiable information on. Unfortunately, that means the large majority of the players in the East region and in the Midwest did not move in the rankings. Rivals was unable to get out and gather new information on these players because of the pandemic.

Nobody in the Rivals network saw most of these players at a third-party camp, college camp, or 7v7 tournament, and there is no new game film to evaluate.

Rivals analysts were very firm in their decision that rankings and ratings can't be changed unless they have gained new, verifiable information on that player since the previous rankings update but the pandemic made it impossible.

We're looking forward to the season, which will inform the next rankings update.

I hope those who were upset yesterday read through the info so they can get a better understanding that the rankings are much more alike than not. Our research was fueled by the reaction yesterday becuse we wanted to know, so Deana and I rolled up our sleeves and started digging. We really didn't know what we would find and were determined we would report our research regardless of what we learned.

So, what did we learn? That subjective analyses simply means there are different takes on different players by different analysts and sites. We also learned that players' state rankings are more revealing than actual star rankings. Ra Ra is a 3-star on Rivals and a 4-star on 247 but he's rated the No. 14 prospect in NC on Rivals and No. 15 prospect in NC on 247. It doesn't make either site right or wrong, they just go about things slightly diffrent from each other.

But you'll find the majority of players are very similarly ranked on both networks.

I enjoyed the tunneling today, and I know Deana did, and we learned quite a bit.

And in closing, this wasn't about Rivals vs. 247, not at all, it was to simply find out what the numbers say so we can then show you guys.

Hope you guys enjoy the info.

This issue isn't about bias against UNC. It's about the sheer laziness/ineptitude of Rivals' evaluations. You're telling me they watched the film of guys like Silver, Echols, Patterson, Dillworth, and Wilson and decided that these guys aren't even close to top 250 players? That's a ridiculous conclusion to come to if so. Each one of those guys are comfortably top 200 players nationally.

Jared Wilson is the most egregious by far. He's rated a 5.5, the lowest 3 star ranking which equates to a borderline P5 level talent. You'd expect his offer list to include the likes of Wake, Vandy, Syracuse, App St, etc, but no, he has commitable offers from UGA, Ohio St and Bama. And not to mention he has fantsstic film.

Rivals clearly no longer bothers to watch film, which was evidenced by them issuing a ranking to a player that didn't even exist a couple of years ago. It's just a shame to watch what 10 years ago was the best recruiting service devolve into the worst, even eclipsing ESPN.

Not sure anyone is really watching RaRa live or on film. Think he is the most undervalued prospect out there. He reminds me of last year with Eugene Asante. Kids was an absolute freak and it took recruiting services till the end of the recruiting season to even recognize him. ESPN is the only service that even comes close with his ranking relative to his athleticism, film work and actual production. Kid has 200+ tackles, track speed, runs down everything and doesn't miss tackles. What are 245 and Rivals looking at? If Rivals is that much into see people in person as they claim, who the H E L L are they seeing now to make all these changes

I have no idea what the literal vetting process is other than I know they put a premium on in-erson evaluations

I agree. And as for Asante, not sure if you heard what Thigpen said last week, but he's faster than Chazz. Asante and Jackson are ready to help this season so Chazz and Jeremiah will be more rested in the fourth quarters of games.

Let the guys stay underrated so we don't have to deal with other schools trying to poach them.

Saying they put a premium on in-person evals is a bunch of crock. How do you update a ranking when there are no camps, no practice and the country is on lock down. Rivals was fine gushing over the kid and stating how he was due for this jump in their rankings and did nothing. I can say the same for the other sight. None of the recruiting services see every kid they rank yet they rank them. Sometime you just have to go on film and if you want to call yourself a talent evaluator, you need to know how to evaluate talent both in-person and on film. I harp on RaRa because you can't look at this kids film and not think with all the knowns that this kid isn't top 100. If this kid had committed to LSU, GA, or Bama of which he had offers, with the way Rivals and the other site was going gaga over him I guarantee his ranking would have been the highest bump of all recruits. Doesn't mean they would have made him a 5* but he would have moved to a high 4* and I honestly believe that. If you take the name out of the equation and looked at both RaRa and T Lewis a 5*, its a guarantee 9 out of 10 would pick RaRa as the better player.

Yes, I heard what Thig had to say about Asante and Jackson. His film didn't lie. He was a monster on the field and yet he was grossly overlooked until the end. Like RaRa that kid had 5* talent based on film. Even if looking at his film there is hesitation of giving the 5* ranking you can't be blind and not make him a high 4* which is what I think everyone did at the end.
