Roy doin' work...

If Roy is going to pull Carter away from Duke now is the time to do it with the way our frontline is being featured.

Surprised to see him rated as high as he is. Mainly because he is a below the rim player. Is 2017 considered a strong class overall? Don't keep up with recruiting like I use to.

I wouldn't call Wendell a "below the rim" player by any means. He plays for a pretty crappy HS team (with crappier coaching) and often gets triple-teamed in HS games and ends up taking more jump shots than he should (has a good natural touch, BTW), but if you had seen him do a one-bounce baseline drive and rise-up from 15 feet out and throw one down on Green Forest's 5* 7-footer's head you would likely alter that characterization.

I believe the dook narrative is greatly exaggerated. Granted they have put the full-court press (and Capel) on him, but Wendell Sr loves him some Roy.

Not below the rim like Meeks but not a high flyer either. Maybe from a off the floor bounce comparable to Tyler Hansbrough for a big guy. Has a lot longer arms though.

We're gonna need alot of help from daddy on this one!!
Well, the good news is his only "mentor" is his dad ;).

Wendell is an interesting kid. His mom and dad are big on academics and he's a strong student. He wanted an offer from Harvard and pledged to at least visit there because, well, it's Harvard (and honestly I think that was to make his parents proud as much as anything). He doesn't do a lot on social media and usually just retweets what his friends send out. He was transferring from Pace to Fulton Leadership (better talent) but at the last minute decided to stay at Pace (it must've been comfort and academics because that coach is pretty clueless from what I've seen).

He hasn't ruled anybody out --- he recently has just shown up at UGA and GATech games unannounced (which of course got them all excited). He says he'll probably visit UK but I've heard his dad is not a fan of Cal. His mom likes Auburn and he'll visit there, but likely as a courtesy to her... although his AAU teammate Jared Harper is going there next season and is on him hard, so ya never know.

dook indeed got on him early and then really turned up the heat (Capel) after Roy offered (knowing that offer meant a LOT to BOTH Wendell and his dad) --- got him to come to their practice tip-off event, yada, yada --- and they've also played the Gary Trent card who wants to do a package deal with Wendell. Bottom line is the dookies are puffing out their chests like he's a done deal there. While the "momentum" may have swung their way, I'm saying that is still a very hasty conclusion at this point.

As for UNC, big fella is an obvious perfect fit at UNC --- prototype UNC big Power-4 with a bonus face-up jumper, and a perfect complement to Bradley at the 5. Roy is doing what Roy does --- steadfast recruiting, honesty and building relationships --- and this one's right in his wheelhouse. I'll just say that Roy and Wendell Sr have been on a first-name basis for a pretty good while now. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that another of his in-state AAU teammates is coming to UNC next season. So I wouldn't put too much stock in the dookie bravado just yet. Let's watch this one play out... the noise coming out of Durham is not exactly the same.as that coming out of ATL. Jes' sayin'.

Have we had any recruits out of GA or specifically out of the Atlanta area in the last few years? I cannot recall any off the top of my head. It's a long process and everybody thought Barnes was a dook lock so we shall see.

Robinson is from Douglasville GA

I'd forgotten where Robinson was from.
It's understandable. For a whole lotta years, Al Wood (from Gray, just outside of Macon) was UNC's only player from GA. In recent years though, HS basketball has really taken off down this way, as well as the AAU tourneys at the big Suannee complex and the Peach Jam. I'm loving it because ATL has become a regional mecca and Roy and the staff have focused a lot of energy in GA and FL. Hell, I've heard more good UNC recruiting intel the last 4 years than maybe all those before combined.

moo was having success in GA under Lowe. I really never understood that.

Georgia has opened up to UNC partially because Paul Hewitt is gone. Not a great coach or anything but he was capable of keeping a good chunk of the talent in state. Ga Tech has been bad since he left recruiting and on the floor. Sydney only really pulled Hickson.

Richard Howell , Lorenzo Brown , Jaqawn Raymond and Ryan Harrow were all from GA but I cannot remember if all were Lowe's recruits. The point is they(moo) were having head scratching success in GA.

Well, here's the other thing you have to remember. Roy had zero ties in GA. When he first came home he concentrated in the fertile grounds of the old ACC parameters, and tried to continue his California pipeline from his KU days. That latter deal lost its charm with the Drew/Wear debacles.
If you notice Roy might still sniff out west but he pretty much stops just west of the Mississippi. He still plays his midwest ties and has gone more and more into GA and FL, which has become VERY fertile ground.

3 of the 4 are. But Hewitt was bringing in legit NBA talent. Bosh , Shumpert , Young , Crittenton , Lawal , Favors , ect....

Devon Dotson is getting alot of looks also..Roy will be there to watch tonight and then Dotson coming for a visit tomorrow.

seems like Roy hits the recruiting trail the hardest of any coach ..... sucks to lose out on so many recruits for a gentleman of a coach !! Go Heels !!

...on the recruiting trail.
Word is he was down here to watch big Wendell Carter last night.
Podcast on IC and the guys said they were surprised that Roy spent his time visiting Wendell Carter this week. They said there is absolutely no buzz with us and WC and he is a Team USA basketball guy and we have made 0 progress with those guys (Why K took the job). Word is WC and Gary Trent Jr. are talking package deal but they aren't as in lock step as Tyus and Okafor but it is pretty strong. Best not get our hopes up for WC.

That's all I needed to hear. Won't get my hopes up on him like I (stupidly) allowed myself to do with Udoka. Wake me up when we are looking at a recruit that isn't getting recruited by UK, KU, or Duke so that I know we actually have a chance.

Oh boo f'ing hoo! Let's quite feeling sorry for ourselves.

Either you're saying:
1) "Roy and staff (after the dust settles on AFAM) can't compete with any these teams from a recruiting standpoint".or

2) "it sucks that Roy doesn't stoop to the shady slick greasy shenanigans, bribes, deals, and "relationships" with handlers, shoe companies, prima donna kids, kids with baggage, etc.... that these schools have no qualms going after. "

I have ZERO problem with who Roy and staff recruit and how they go about it. There have been plenty of times in the past (granted, not recently) and will be in the future, where Roy will beat these schools for key recruits.

But if the kids choose another school because they prefer "the process and what they and their family and handlers get" over the UNC way.....good for them. I don't want the kinds of kids who make this bad judgment / wrong choice.

I don't know who on the board coined the term, but I like it: how has the choice of the "busters" at Dook and UK (riding the pine, way underachieving, looking at transfer options) worked out for the kids?

Let 'em say what they will. As I said above, dook has gone full-court on him and yes, call on all their unfair USA hoops advantages, but anyone who says Roy has made zero progress with WC is simply full of crap.

Let me say this Gary. If Roy can steal Carter from K that would be a shocker. Everything I have read says he is a Duke lock. Another thing, watch what they do and not what they say. The kid has avoided the UNC campus ....not even an unofficial. I'm get excited when he visits the UNC campus for an unofficial .

Agreed, I'm just a little disappointed in the miss. I'm definitely not saying #2. Same as you, I like that Roy doesn't go the shady route. Although it seems that is the only way to get the top recruits these days, so maybe I should just get it out of my head that we have a chance at them if we won't play that game. I'm not even saying #1, I'm sure Roy can hang with the big boys still, if given a fair shake. However, until the AFAM stuff is finally cleared up, and we land another big time recruit, there's nothing that suggests that we'll land a big time recruit when competing against the other big boys.

Wouldn't be a shocker at all... well, maybe to the dookies.
Again, I'll give em credit, they have put a bull-rush on him and impressed him in doing so. It will be a battle, and it ain't over.

I'll just put it this way: Listen to what they say at home, not what the programs/fans say.

There were a LOT of folks close to the UNC program who were confident about Udoka, however I don't know ANYBODY who is on the ground in GA/FL circles who shared that belief... and when my best source simply texted me "Kansas" the other night I knew it was over. In other words, what I'm simply trying to share on here is that the dookie confidence up there on WC doesn't quite match the noises down here in my neck o' the woods, and those noises are way more positive for us on Wendell than they ever were on Udoka... and I'll just leave it at that.

I'm afraid you might be setting yourself up for disappointment on Carter. There are too many fish out there for me to even start hoping/worrying on Carter. No offense but you told us something similar on Dennis Smith and he committed to moo a few days later. I think Roy's visit was just a last fling to show him we are there. Also think Carter is looking to land at an academically prestigious private school and he even promised mom he would consider Harvard. As far as Udoka everybody was saying Kansas after FSU was kicked aside.

No, everybody was NOT saying Kansas, or didn't you read this board the past couple of days? Good grief.

And what I said about Dennis Smith was a true account of something Boo Williams said... and when I shared it I added the disclaimer that I didn't buy his conclusions --- it was more likely an indicator that Roy had made up some ground (which he had) but still likely wouldn't overcome the sketchiness in Smith's recruitment (he didn't). And I also posted not to come back at me months later and act like I was calling him to UNC, because I wasn't. But here we go --- sure enough out comes a rather douchey selective recall to throw at me.

I started this thread just to share some info on Roy's recruiting stop, and some local stuff I know about Wendell Carter. It's responses like this that will make me think twice before I bring anything else to this place.

Sooo, you are in the living rooms of these kids with Roy and know that his recruiting is "steadfast" and based on honesty, huh? Unreal.

Share all the info you care to share with us on recruiting stuff you hear Gary. I for one enjoy hearing what you have to say, even if it doesn't pan out it at least gives us hope, which is a heck of a lot better than a lot of the gloom and doom some posters on here seem to want to share all the time. I don't share a lot of info because I don't know anything, it's fun for me to get every little positive tid bit I can get. Thanks man!

UNC has the guards already in tow for the next 2-3 years to make sure some good bigs come aboard as well. Just have to be patient might not be this recruiting class.
