didn't he just give an opinion?...i've read several accounts on the statement...thought he just said he thought roy might retire?
What he supposedly said is an extremely reasonable position to hold no matter if we win or lose anything after seeing what happened at BC.

just to be clear, there are plenty of others saying the same thing on a national level...it just so happens he played college bball...i personally don't believe that lends him anymore area to work within, but i bet a lot of sheep that live and die on the words of a sports talk show host take it as some sort of source that leads to an outcome.
who is defending him?...you tell me what he has said other than he believes roy might retire?
think about that...it's not like he said he heard, he has sources, or he thinks he should.
i'm not defending the guy...i will say it's the perfect deflect from wednesday though...it's what coaches do after wins.

With all due respect, Mike, we aren't defending him whatsoever. If I can speak for gteeitup, it's not a stretch to understand where Gottleib is coming from whether he made it up out of thin air or is saying what others in the know are saying/thinking.
Someone already mentioned it but Even worse than what he said about Roy retiring, was that smart-azz comment about UNC's defense and the no show classes. That should bring a reprimand from CBS if they have any integrity. I mean, what the hell... Is he gonna be able to get away with cracking on Louisville and the prostitution scandal next?
What's your deal? The dude basically said he's been hearing Roy is going to retire. I'm sorry, but by saying people around college basketball thinks Roy is going to retire, that means what he's hearing. Roy said that's a damn lie, which in turns means gottlieb is pulling crap out of his ars and making up sources. Then to say when he does Retire, he will line it up so Hubert is the coach?? that's bush league stuff right there. If you have no issues with it, that's not surprising....
I haven't seen what Gottleib said. I watched the halftime show but just saw the 'no show' comments. I can't find the clip anywhere on the internet either. From what I understand, he said he thought he may retire. If this is the case, then the irresponsible party is whoever told Roy otherwise to try and get a reaction. If he said he is going to retire that is on Doug. Regardless, I thought Roy's response was entertaining.
I sure wish some of our fans were half as quick to defend our players and Coach as they are to defend a jerk like Gottlieb. Go to Gott-thief's twitter account. He said "yes, people in basketball think Roy might walk if they win the whole thing........this is not news to anyone in hoops. Simply stating his knees, vertigo, NCAA stuff make people think this could be his last year at UNC." Even if those rumors are out there, you don't go on national TV and spread them. You go to Roy and ask him about it. Since when is it his job to speak for "anyone in hoops/people in basketball"? Irresponsible commentating at best and it makes recruiting even harder for our coach!

I can't stand Gottlieb either, but I've read MUCH, MUCH worse about Roy on these message boards from "fans." I'd love to hear what Roy would have to say about the Carolina faithful.

Do you realize that Roy was the coach for the opponent when this happened? He was actually in the arena. I will assume you didn't know this? I'll hang up and listen.

I remember as I heard him say it live pre-game, I was kind of shocked by the level of certainty he seemed to be stating that people around basketball believed Roy would in fact be retiring. He said he believed it could be a situation like Dean, where Roy retires late so Hubert would be in position to take over. Seth Davis was immediately like (basically) "well I don't know all about that, Roy is certainly winding down, but I don't see any chance he leaves at the end of this year." Now that it's blown up into this story, I definitely want to re-watch Gottlieb's comments to see exactly what he said, but I can't find it anywhere.
Glad that I can get updates about Gottlieb's comments about Roy and Carolina on here because I literally turn the TV or Radio Station every time I hear him speak because he has one of the most annoying voices on the airways IMO, and looks to throw Carolina under the bus when he has the opportunity to do so....

Keep in mind who Gottlieb's employer is. CBSSports has been bashing Carolina for a long while. Gregg Doyle anyone?
File this in the "don't care" folder for me. Gottlieb can say whatever he wants. No one pays any attention to him anyway. Why are people getting so worked up over this?

Are you insinuating that there are high school kids that would put any stock into what Doug Gottlieb says? I just can't go along with that.
The point is when the moron goes out there and says this stuff on National TV that's only another thing that hurts recruiting. If other fans cant see that they are blind. He might as well have went and said - I heard coach K's retiring and going to work at Disney World, Calipari's starting his own Italian restaurant, Pitino is starting a brothel. Plain and simple if he doesn't have a damn good source he needs to shut the hell up.
Pretty sure Gottlieb's comments didn't spark sudden epiphanies in opposing coaches' minds.

Just something else they can use. "Hey recruit, did you hear what Doug Gotturd said on CBS Saturday" yeah that's right looks like Roy is out the door. Obviously others are saying whatever they can about Roy to get players but when someone says it on National TV It doesn't help at all. Surely you see that too right?
Gott-thief is a liar and a thief. But none of these high school kids have any inkling about his past or the fact that he never misses a chance to denigrate UNC, or that his employer(CBS) does the same thing. As a so-called expert, his opinion does carry some weight with these kids. They simply don't know any better.
Let's put it this way. Can you imagine Bilas, Raftery, Bonner, Burke, or Vitale spreading unsubstantiated rumors like Gott-thief did on national TV? Heck, even Greenburg was taken aback by this display of unprofessionalism. Untold careers and lives have been ruined by the spreading of false rumors.
I realize Gott-thief has made a career out of controversial sensationalism, but that is no excuse for his actions. It is pervasive in all types of media now. The truth is secondary to media site hits. Again, the ends do not justify the means.
I think it's naive to think that his words don't impact Roy's ability to recruit. He's had to deal with negative recruiting for three years now. This certainly doesn't help.
During Knox's unofficial last week he said "He thought UNC was a big man school"....This is probably what has been fed to him by our rivals. Of course, we all know the Heels feed the bigs a lot, but we all know that the Heels are NOT just a "big man" school. The problem is that some of these kids have never watched a UNC game on TV even though almost all of the Heels games are on ESPN. My point is that rival coaches will do anything to keep a recruit from considering UNC. It will never end. That's another reason why it is critical to get the kid on campus for a visit. Just don't assume they watch the Heels games on TV. And never assume that a rival coach is not using negative recruiting.
Isn't Knox a big man? Why would other coaches be promoting UNC as a big man school to him?
