Roy still hasn't lost in Rd of 64

Tough season. Lost to dook three times by a combined 55 points.

Bottom line no first round exits in the tourney is a heck of an accomplishment - it is not like every team he brought in was the '09 unc team. I am not sure that any coach with even 10+ appearances in the tourney can claim that aside from Roy... Or even if you just counted the 10 times they appeared as a favorite. Obviously the rat can't.

only the current climate of fandom would appreciate not losing in the first round of a 68 team tournament.

if this was posted even 10 years ago it would be infamous...now it's just a percentage.

Hell Gyeah.....I love Roy. He put the program back together and won 2 titles. But what we are seeing the last couple of years is not the UNC program that most expect. Criticism has nothing to do with Roy personally. But this isn't church ball where everybody gets a pat on the head for trying. And need I remind you that Roy gets paid very, very, well and should be accountable for when things slide every bit as much as when they are winning big.

I never disparaged Roy in pointing out that Dean lost in 1st round 3 years in a row in a tougher tournament. Facts and statistics are what they are but don't let that get in the way of an agenda.

Well, technically he'll never lose in the FIRST round ever again (unless we have to play in one of the play-in games in Dayton)... haha. According to the stupid NCAA, the Thursday/Friday opening games are actually 2nd round.

It's hilarious to me that some of the people who would gladly swap Roy for Shaka or Hoiberg are shocked that losing in the first round is even a discussion. Self-awareness fail of the highest order.

Well I think if Hoiberg had Roy's talent, there's an argument that he could do as well. As well as Iowa State's program is perceived to be under Hoiberg, he's really only had 1 NBA talent in Royce White. This year's team probably doesn't have a single pro.... Niang might be a NBA player, but he may not. Jackson's a pro, Paige will get a shot and one of the bigs will probably hang around in the NBA. The talent isn't equal to make a comparison between Roy and Hoiberg and Shaka.

So many things wrong with this.

You do know Roy isn't even in the top 20 for College Coaching salaries don't you? You do realize this NCAA mess has him handcuffed don't you? But alas, no loyality whatsoever anymore, "what have you done for me lately". Sad state of affairs.

What talent? Seems common knowledge that we have no shooters, no toughness, and no development.

I understand your point fully but again the players are part of the job, and these folks would make the switch right now because they're delusional enough to trust that a guy who's never recruited pros would do so magically better than Roy once they had the power of our program. A program which, according to many on this board, is nothing better than a garden variety top 15-20 also-ran.

Well Hoiberg played in the pros so I'd imagine he would do well if he had pros. But Iowa's been traditionally owned by Roy at KU and UNC and KU histortically. I don't think he'd have a hard time recruiting pros to UNC.

It's tough to compare the 2.

I'm one of Roy's biggest supporters, I love the man . . but, what we saw last night from our players was something far different than what we witnessed just a week ago in the ACC Tournament. The level of play when we took on BC, Louisville, Virginia, and Notre Dame just wasn't there last night . . slice it, dice it, wrap it any way you want, the team I saw against Harvard was far different to last week's.Hell, a (7-7) Boston College team beat Harvard by 7 points . . Harvard is a bad team period . . !

I along with most of our fans thought this team had turned a corner last week and were ready to make a little noise in this Tourney . . you know, the team that fans write about saying it's "so talented and if we just play to our talent level we can make the Final Four . . " . . . yeah, that team.

Build up a 14 point lead and then for whatever reason(s) . . just to let down and coast for a while.

It's the disappointment that last night, this team has reverted back to doing the things we/I thought it had overcome with what we saw last week.

I'm glad that Roy has kept his unbeaten first Tourney game streak intact, but, he was so close to having that broken. Not because we couldn't make shots, but because we were sloppy with the ball. At times, the ball wasn't taken away from us --> It was GIVEN away.

I love our guys, but, they may very well be the dumbest collection of players on one UNC team that I have ever seen . .

For instance, once in each of the last 2 games, Brice just holds the ball out in front of him to allow a defender to just grab it from him and take off downcourt.

We may have taken Harvard lightly, but, I assure you, that Basketball IQ this squad does truly lack.

I completely agree with all of that.

I am as frustrated as anyone. UNC was very fortunate to hang on and win last night.
We would have all been embarrassed for them to have lost to Harvard, a team that lost
by 49 to Virginia earlier this year. Our team lacks focus, basketball IQ (popular term
on this board), a consistent outside shooter, an ability to turn the ball over at an alarming
rate, toughness and an ability to play good defense for 40 minutes. UNC teams have
lost double digit number of games for the third straight year.

But they are our team!! They are what they are. Our team has some good talent and
our coach is a proven winner. How many coaches can claim two National Championships
in the past 10 years?? By the end of tonight, there will be 32 teams left in the tournament
and 36 that wish they were still in. UNC can not correct the past, they just need
to focus on how to play their best against Arkansas. It is called March Madness for a reason.
UNC has had some very fortunate games in the tournament in the past where we could have
stumbled. UNC has also lost some games where another team just went out of their minds
at the right time. We are not entitled to anything.

So true Heels fans are left to cheer for our guys, criticize them when they need it and hopefully move on to
the next round after tomorrows game. Heels, please be aggressive and play well. We love you guys even
though we don't act like it often times. I, for one, am not ever going to start cheering for someone else!!

Almost agree with you Billy.......................................BUT I think the 8-20 team was dumber. But that's about the only one.

I hope no one is expecting much further than a Sweet 16 showing from this team anyway.

In 2009, UNC was like Kentucky is this year... and won like a bulldozer. I think Kentucky will do the same this year.

But, this UNC team was talented and synchronized enough to ever have expected more than a Sweet 16 showing, realistically. This team needs another year. It's just a fact. The freshmen we have now are probably one of the better recruiting classes we have seen, but it's taking a while for them to get their sea legs. Aside from the occasional Tyler Hansbrough, Marvin Williams and Brendan Wright, you don't get freshmen playing like seniors out of the gate.

I was really bummed we lost the ACCT because that was one we COULD have won. I always want at least a split record against dook. That didn't happen. But, with the nature of things now, and the circumstances we are dealing with, it's actually not a bad team. We expect more because of our past. But, our present has some unprecedented factors that prevent the past from repeating itself at the moment. Roy wasn't perfect in 2009 or 2005 either. He made some blatant mistakes those seasons. But, he had the talent and the luck, and made enough GOOD coaching choices, to make it go all the way. We are just fans, so you're just along for the ride on it's best and worst days. So, you either resolve to enjoy it as much as possible or never be happy and criticize and whine instead.

Mikey,

I can't tell you how bad it makes me feel that I authored that which you have under-lined . . I live, breathe and die UNC B-Ball . . and to write that, truly hurts me. I love our guys, but those repeated mistakes that are so evident, there can only be one conclusion.

Yeah, that 8-20 team, had more problems than you could imagine, the bickering, chemistry and lack of talent at a couple of positions were overwhelming, let alone the fact that Doherty was fanning the flames.

I watched every game though . .

Considering the negative recruiting that I'm sure has been going on against Carolina, I think that Roy has done a great job of getting the kids that he has. With that said, I think we can all agree that Roy isn't an exceptional in game coach. He coaches his system and is very slow to stray from that system. I don't think that we can ask for much more than what Roy gives to the program.

I think that the Harvard game was more jitters than anything else. I expect a better game from the Heels vs Ark.

Also, Roy has taken UNC to the ACC Championship game 6 of last 9 years, winning 2 (one year not winning was '09). UNC has won some big games and the only bad loss is Pitt.

I can't think of another coach that can match this for UNC.
