Sad excuse for coaching

The lady reported asked Roy at the halftime interview was he concerned with the defense and his response was something like "I don't care how much the other team scores as long as we score more". He completely ignored the question about defense. I knew right then that if it came down to close game the Heels would loose. Just like when Rivers hit the 3-pointer to beat the Heels a few years ago. Heels had the better team but they lost.

Unfortunately, we're going to have to suffer, as fans, while his swan song lasts.

The sunshiners can reference the increasingly more distant past and ignore the obvious that is present, but I think anyone that is being honest with themselves realizes Roy is holding the program back at this point. He's earned the right to leave gracefully, but I think he forfeits that right if he doesn't exercise it after this season.
I'd say the comment was spot on. Swap coaches before the game K coaches our players to a 20 point victory easy.

Coach K makes Paige, Berry, Jackson and Beitt make Wide open threes? Damn, does he have some Jedi power?

But your not...
get back with me after our sweet 16 exit. But be my guest, you and the rest of the sunshine gang can keep on living in your your fantasy world. Makes no damn difference to me

No my friend, but how players play (tight vs loose) is a reflection of the coach. The plays and defensive sets that are run comes from the coach. The sub patterns and who is on the court comes from the coach.

Our guards played like shit and shot the ball poorly. I get what you are saying and I understand you are emotional and want to stick up for Roy. The problem here and it is pretty clear to most of the people on the board tonight is that Roy did not coach a great game and was clearly out coached. I know you don't believe it, but coaching was definitely one of the top 2 reasons we lost tonight.

When did you say your name was Sunny? Mine is Dustin from South Gastonia. Your turn

The funny thing is that if Marcus turns stuff around, Brice throws the team on his back, and the Heels make the final four, and maybe even somehow squeak out a national championship, despite Roy continuing to botch coaching decisions, the sunshiners will be here saying all the Roy criticism was ridiculous and that we couldn't have done it without him.

No dude, playing loose is not the reflection of the coach. I understand YOUR frustration. When UNC goes on win streaks against Duke, is coach K bad, with his players playing tight a reflection on him? Nope. Was MP right in 2014? Why wasn't Brice tight? At the end of the day, players make plays. Our players didn't. If everyone wants to blame a coach for a lack of easy shots that could have been made. Go ahead.

The coach can't make shots. That's obvious..... but when one guy is 13-17, going against a guy with 4 fouls, and your two guards are 4 for whatever...... is it that hard to call a timeout and stress getting the ball inside, and to chill on jacking up perimeter shots?

Not really. I celebrated two national championships. Did you?
To defend the other guy. That was what 7 years ago. I love Roy. But maybe the game has passed him by like it happened to Bobby Bowden. And I question Roy a lot as many on here know. And how much of losing Coach Haase hurt Roy and this program. The underachievering seems to start the same time he left to go become a HC himself.

The coach doesnt shoot the shots, no shit. But the fact that we continued to jack up brick after brick when one of our big men was on his way to a career night is poor coaching. Not to mention giving Maye and Pinson huge first half minutes when we had a chance to step on their necks

Feel really bad for Roy. It's a shame he happens to be in the same conference with arguably one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time. To have his HOF legacy tarnished by this one "foe" is really not fair. K outcoaches 99.9% of the coaches he faces every time they suit up. For Roy to have to try to match that 2-3 times a year is just insane and the expectations are just unreasonable. If he were still in the Big12 he's be sitting on maybe 2 losses at worst, a guaranteed #1 seed, and would only have to face a team like Duke once a year in maybe a FF match up. Up until this point he has done a fantastic job coaching this team this season. Previous years I know I have been critical myself, but he has really stepped his coaching up this year. The exception is always going to be when he has to go up against K, but like I said 99.9% of all college basketball coaches have that same issue.

Amazing so many of you are realizing something I've been saying for years!
Roy is at best an average game coach, maybe a bit below average this season.
Haven't watched the game yet, DVR'd it, as I was umpiring tonight.

I see at least 2, maybe 3 more losses in the regular season for this team. Hope I'm
wrong on that!

Its not like K had some magic trick up his sleeve. He played iso ball with the only two players he has that match our talent and hoped they could go off. Roy made no effort to make the other guys beat us and was seemingly fine having Brice on an island on the perimeter playing one on one with the likely #2 pick in the draft. He also allowed us to jack up 3 after 3 when we had the best advantage in the paint we've had all year in conference play and never once called a timeout to settle the team down and get back to what was working. And it was clear as day that this game was too big for Pinson and Maye yet they got crucial minutes at the end of both halves. Its not hard for K to outcoach Roy when Roy does it for him

Don't worry! Be Happy!

This is one of the most embarrassing losses I've witnessed in my lifetime. Roy is s disgrace. Marcus Paige and Kennedy Meeks are empty jerseys.

...that would be the posting(s) that I have seen from you even after a victory. Trolling here All night long...???!

Bottom line..Roy has to go..and take Davis with him..he's the shooting coach right?..well,we can all see that whatever he is teaching isn't working!!

you'd say what comment was spot on? You and I are saying the same thing opposite of what I was replying to or your grammar is incorrect. Confused in the I-95 corridor.

^^^^ This. so true. Did you see his postgame interview? Blamed Coach Smith for teaching him not to call a TO and allow the D to set. No two coaches have been better in setting a play for success than Smith and Roy yet he doesnt help his team. He apologized to his players for NOT calling the TO and then, in the next sentence says he would probably do the same thing again... isnt that the def of insanity?

This loss is on Roy. He is great and preparing his players and recruitiung but terrible with in-game coaching.

He's really not that great at recruiting at either. Not to mention he has a guy on the team in Joel James that provides nothing to the team. Weren't Justin Jackson and Pinson and Berry supposed to be the next great class. Under Roy, they have gotten worse as players.

I'm glad somebody else noticed that interview and is referencing it. I knew then and there that we were in trouble last night.

K was doing way more with far less.

Roy is done. Our players have low basketball IQ's. This team is full of wimps. We are not winning anything this year. Wait until next year without Johnson. We are in serious trouble next year!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach K makes Paige, Berry, Jackson and Beitt make Wide open threes? Damn, does he have some Jedi power?

No but he recruited those guys. Guys that couldn't beat most of us in a game of horse.

Other teams recruit impact shooters all the time. Why does Roy seem to miss out on ALL of them?

We will be a 2 or 3 seed. If we get matched up with an athletic 6 or 7 seed that can shoot in our 2nd game, we won't even make the Sweet 16. This team is done.

Outside of James, Pinson is the worst player on the team. He provides nothing. HE AIRBALLED A PUTBACK early in the game!!!!!!!!!!!! AIRBALL!!!!!!! You have to be some sort of special person to pull that off.

I agree with your post and was thinking the same thing as I read the OP you quoted. Rat didn't outcoach Roy tonight. Roy simply didn't coach. For whatever reason, I just watched from 68-60 UNC again. Bad shot after bad shot after bad shot. Brice's lone touch for a dunk came off what should have been a turnover by Paige as he drove towards the bucket. Jackson just happened to be in the right place to get the ball and dish to a wide open Brice under the goal for an uncontested dunk. Other than Meeks lay-up after a Kennard three ball, that was all the scoring sans a 1/2 FT opportunity for underachiever Paige. wow.

And he would lose those matchups against K just like he did at Kansas. And just like he is doing now.

To say it's unfair to face K is a cop out. Roy makes a lot of money to win those matchups. The sunshine gang claims he is as good as K. Either win or hit the road.

I've been with you for years!!!!!!!!! His 2 championships were won by teams that shouldn't have lost. If they had lost that would have been a crime. If you are relying on Roy to coach up some players and win with his X and O ability, you will be highly disappointed.

I don't have a problem with no TO at the end of the game. I thought the biggest travesty was the Britt, Paige, Pinson, Jackson and Maye lineup for the last 2 minutes of the half. Brice was on a big time hot streak, only had one foul (Hicks had only 2 and Meeks had 0), we had just taken a 6 point lead and forced K to call a timeout, and we come back out with a lineup that had absolutely no chance to exploit their biggest weakness and our biggest strength. Instead of maintaining momentum and giving ourselves the best chance to build the lead even more, we predictably let them back in it and went to the half with no momentum at all. Roy would go onto bench Brice in 2 other similar situations with 8 point leads in the second half, just to see Duke immediately cut the lead to 2 or 4.

At the end of the day, they had their best lineup on the floor basically the entire game (obviously that was due to injury, but it is a fact). We probably had our best lineup on the floor 25% of the game. I have no problem with generally keeping our legs fresh, but basically, Luke Maye should never be our only "big" guy on the floor, and that was the case for 2 of the most important minutes of the game. Pitiful.

I was saying that SJUNGs comment below was spot on. I just poorly quoted things =)

" The bottom line is we're always at a disadvantage facing K because he's a better coach. And no longer do we have substantially better talent."

Just consider what happened when Roy started making his in game adjustments. Late game he calls the D to go 1-3-1. First possession Ingram missed a 3, second possession Kennard 3, Duke leads. Why are we inviting a D that allows 3 point shots when we're up 2?

Also, Roy tried to call box sets late in the game, but Duke was really well prepared for everything we run.

Upper Plains - A few weeks ago you posted about this team being a group that could lose the first weekend of the tourney. I disagreed with you in the thread. Let me take back my comment.Looking at things now, I think you were/are spot on that this team could easily lose the first weekend of the tournament. Sorry dude, you were right.

It doesn't make me happy to be right. Wish I was wrong.

I have felt for a long time that this team will not be a #1 seed. They will be a 2 or 3. Some projections have us as the 2 in the west. If we are a 2 or 3 and face a really athletic, good shooting 6 or 7 seed our second game, we are screwed and will be going home before the Sweet 16.

I hope this team proves me wrong, but I don't see it.

Paige, Berry, Jackson, Johnson, Hicks. No Theo at all please...Hell I'm even considering letting Stillman White get some minutes at this point when one of the guards get tired. Something has to change. We've gotta find consistency.
