Screw Politics, Let’s Talk NC BBQ

Did you read what I linked? Open the ****ing article you moron.

I was born in Chapel Hill. I currently live 35 minutes from Chapel Hill. I went to UNC. I work now in Hillsborough and it is about 5 miles with no turns (other than parking lots) from my office door to the old Allen and Son front door. Trust me when I tell you I am much more informed about this than you. Hell, @prlyles is more informed than you.

Now if you are trying to claim that Keith Allen's grandfather opened a restaurant near Pittsboro which no longer exists, I have no knowledge of this either way. But the one that is now south of Chapel Hill is not owned by Keith Allen, although he does own the building. Again, it's all in the article I linked.

Also, it is Allen and SON- singular.

I did not read your article because I'm not signing up for anything.

"Keith Allen is actually the son in Allen & Son. His father, James Allen, bought a drive-in barbecue spot near Pittsboro back in the ‘60s, and that's where Keith learned the trade. In 1970, while still in college, the younger Allen happened across a restaurant for sale a few miles north of Chapel Hill. He borrowed $3,000, bought the place with a certified check on a Saturday, and went to work at the new outpost of Allen & Son the following Monday. (His father's original Pittsboro location is still in operation under different owners, who bought it years ago after James Allen passed away.)"

got me on the Son(s) though. Woo hoo.

I am an expert on Allen and Son- the one that closed down is 5 miles from my office.

First off- the original one was the one on 86N, That was where it all started and where Keith Allen cooked up until the day he closed it down last year. The one south of town was a sort of franchise. Screw you @bluetoe for making me post an N&O link, but you are talking out of your ass.

.

Second, it was a good BBQ sammich, but I certainly wouldn't say it was anywhere close to the Ayden joints (if you like down east Q) or Lexington (if you like western Q). Allen and Son on 86N had all sorts of stuff on their menu too, which is a sure sign of inferior BBQ.
first of all, congrats on being as wrong as prlyles. Second of all, my only personal claim regarding the worth of the Q at A&S was that it isn't bad. And it isn't. You can actually read what I said if you care to and are able which I'm not really sure of at this point.

Thirdly, you're a dickhead, and a misinformed one at that. Nice to see your true colors.

Here you go- from the News and Observer (since you can't figure out how to open)

Allen & Son Barbeque, one of North Carolina’s most revered barbecue destinations, has closed.

Keith Allen started the restaurant 48 years ago at the age of 19, cooking pork shoulders over wooden coals from logs he split himself. Its reputation grew over the years from a Chapel Hill favorite to one of the state’s historic restaurants, included on the North Carolina Barbecue Society’s trail of distinguished pits and recently named by Southern Living as the fifth best barbecue restaurant in the south.

Allen & Son’s last day was Wednesday, Allen said. He closed it quietly to avoid a long, tearful farewell.

“It would have been very emotional, too much to endure,” Allen said. “You can’t hug and kiss and cry and all that stuff and still work an 8-hour day. I just want to thank my customers, without them we couldn’t have done anything.”

The smokers, cookware and memorabilia will be put up for auction. Allen does not own the property, having leased the building and land since the beginning.

“We done it for 48 years, we did our run, it’s time to move on,” Allen said Thursday in a phone interview. “It’s a hard thing to walk away from something like this. It’s the cycle of life. You do what you’re supposed to do as long as you can do it right.”

North Carolina’s barbecue traditions are part of the state’s identity, a prideful connection across centuries and regions over sharing smoked pork, be it whole hog or shoulders. Even in the quickly growing Triangle, Allen & Son existed in the old school, found off Millhouse Road by way of country roads outside of ever-developing Chapel Hill.

Allen is famous for doing nearly all of the work himself, showing up at 3 in the morning since the beginning to light the smokers and cook the sides. The restaurant resembled a hunting cabin, the dining room paneled in wood with ducks on the wall and checkered tablecloths on the tables.

Allen said the closure wasn’t a financial decision, that the restaurant remained busy to its last day, though it had cut hours and days over the summer. Over the years, Allen said he had lined up five different successors, with each ultimately not working out. In the end, he decided to close and sell off the restaurant in pieces.

Now he said he’ll focus on his other businesses, including sporting good store Blackwood Station Outfitters in Pittsboro.

The Allen & Son in Pittsboro will remain open, operated independently through a licensing agreement.

After a career making some of the most famous barbecue in North Carolina, Allen said he’s proud of the restaurant he built, hoping it added some measure of joy to the community.

“You produce what you can to make the world better as you’re passing through,” Allen said. “That’s all I can do every day.”

Wait- aren't you the same @bluetoe who had a nervous breakdown on the mainboard and had to leave because everyone was laughing at you?

nope. Never came close to having a nervous breakdown over anything, and never left of my own accord. I won't claim that there weren't those who laughed out of ignorance and stupidity, just as you are now acting stupidly and ignorantly. The article I linked said the original...the Pittsboro one...was opened in the sixties. Keith said in your article that he did it for 48 years. Get someone to help you with the math.

and like I said earlier, if Keith had some father or grandfather who ran a joint in Pittsboro, I couldn’t say. Only that the one in between CH and Pittsboro came after the one in Hillsborough.

and no, you had a meltdown when you were in the Stump tournament. I never understood why- it would have been a badge of honor to be in that thing.

I'm not sure if you can cook anything at 120 - maybe cold smoked salmon 🤷‍♂️?

Just for the record, you can sous vide a ribeye at 120 degrees then finish with a sear on cast iron for a perfect medium rare.

Things I've learned from this thread:

  1. There is such a thing as fast food barbecue.
  2. NC barbecue is still controversial.
  3. Here's another thing @blazers doesn't know anything about (We're running out of things).
  4. Everyone is an expert at eating bbq.
Ill add a fifth item
5. @bluetoe mission is to piss everyone off. I knew it before this thread. @UNC71-00 just found out.

you're just not being bright. I was trying for the honor...obviously... and the then-mods censored me, apparently because they had already picked their winner. The only thing that burned me was that censoring. They got what was coming to them though.

And if you could read plain English and do simple math, you'd understand that the Pittsboro place was first and that Keith, the son, cut his BBQ teeth there before opening the store above CH.

One thing I learned at an early age...when someone resorts to talking about nervous breakdowns and personal attacks, you know that they've thrown in the towel otherwise.

I've said here before that I'm here to duke it out as a form of release from dealing with idiots in real life. But I don't pick fights for that purpose, I let them come to me. If you had even half a brain, you'd see that I started neither fight here, not with prlyles or with unc71-00. I posted what I know to be true, and politely, I might add. They objected and when I wouldn't bow to them, their panties got wadded. Does that remind you of how it went another time? It should.

Sorry, but you and I have not been fighting. I don’t care enough about you to fight.

well, that's how it was characterized, and you evidently care enough to respond negatively (which is the essence of fighting). I always have to chuckle at the 'I don't care' responders who always seem to care enough to respond.

The only point I am trying to make, which for some reason escapes you, is that Allen and Son, the one everyone knows and talks about, was first located on 86N. The one on 15/501 between Pittsboro and CH is not the one started by Keith's father or grandfather or whatever. No one (apparently other than you) has ever eaten at the old one in Pittsboro and I can't even find a picture of it. Furthermore the one currently between Chapel Hill Pittsboro has no relation to the one on 86N, other than a licensing agreement.

That's it you autist. Nothing more, nothing less. If you wish to dispute this point, go right ahead. I have nothing more to say on the matter.

It doesn't escape me, I reject it as being nonsense. You have nothing more to say because you're wrong and I think you know it. I have repeatedly pointed out that that Chapel Hill people aren't nearly as much aware of the location south of town as they are of the CH location. That doesn't mean that it (south) wasn't the first and the place where Keith, the son of Allen and Son, got his start...as the article I linked clearly points out.

Here is an easily found link that will give you all the pictures you could hope for..

LOL, what are you trying to say? That your panties are easily wadded up?

And I don't give a shit how this board has operated for years.

And your panties are so easily wadded up.

LOL. translation; I'm butthurt from the reaming bluetoe just gave me.
First of all, toesy, we are no longer allowed to use the term "butthurt" due to 0910's hemorrhoid issues. Second, you are a bigger putz than even me. My old lady is a total bitch, what's your excuse?

You’re doing the ghey thing again.

*NTTAWWT
Haha, speaking of butthurt... I'm doing the ghey thing? YOU went way, way back just to see 'butt' mentioned. Should be a nice addition to your collection of all things manmeat though. Here's a bonus for you...tallywhacker. You're welcome.

The search feature is at the top of the screen.

I hope you enjoy the “reaming.” Just remember that even if pitching is more fun than catching, you’re both still playing baseball.

first of all, numbnuts, check the post date. Secondly, I don't know your old lady. If I did, she wouldn't be such a bitch.

oh, I guess that's the feature you use to search for dick references. When did you decide that pitching is more fun than catching? I guess you've done both.

Every thread guys?

IMO, threads about BBQ should be sacred and untainted by the petty day to day arguments of politics and degrees of gayness and shenanigans and such.

ARE WE ANIMALS???? THIS IS BBQ GENTLEMEN!
