Six ACC Representative Named To Division I Council Committees
Diverse group to work on behalf of student-athletes
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - The Division I Council moved the creation of the governance structure closer to the finish line this week when it appointed the members of its seven committees. The committee rosters will include six representatives from the Atlantic Coast Conference and its member schools. These members join the NCAA governance structure along with President Bud Peterson of Georgia Tech and Jane Miller of Virginia, who began terms on the NCAA Board of Directors in January representing the ACC and NACWAA, respectively.
Committee members from the conference include Division I Council member and Miami Athletics Director Blake James (Football Oversight Committee), ACC Senior Associate Commissioner Paul Brazeau (Men's Basketball Oversight Committee), ACC Senior Associate Commissioner Nora Lynn Finch (Women's Basketball Oversight Committee), Clemson Senior Women's Administrator Natalie Honnen (Competition Oversight Committee), Committee on Academics member and Virginia Faculty Athletics Representative Carolyn Callahan (Legislative Committee) and ACC Senior Associate Commissioner and Chief of Internal Affairs Brad Hostetter (Legislative Committee).
"I'm pleased that the next step within our new structure has been completed and also that our conference is so well represented," said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. "I believe these seven committees will do an outstanding job on behalf of our student-athletes and college athletics. The overall experience and knowledge that has been assembled across these committees should serve our student-athletes and programs well."
Council chair Jim Phillips, athletics director at Northwestern University, said the members treated each committee like it was forming a team, with chairs determining the skills, expertise and experience each committee needed. The Council then identified the most qualified candidates to fill each committee's need.
"This group is extremely confident in the process we used to populate the governance structure. It was thoughtful, respectful and collaborative," said Northwestern Athletics Director and council chair Jim Phillips. "We identified the most competent and skilled people to serve without compromising our belief in having broad-based representation of genders, job titles, ethnic identities, conferences and subdivisions. The paramount qualification was a commitment to the student-athlete experience and student-athlete well-being."
Candidates were vetted thoroughly both by the Council members already serving on each individual committee and by the Council as a whole.
