Well, Jackson St absolutely destroyed FAMU. This in Mack's 4th year, with enough talent to walk away with the Coastal.

We are an abysmal embarrassment on the defensive side of the ball. I didn't even know it was possible
for any team to score forty points in a QUARTER (26 points in 7:20, 12 points in 31 seconds). Do we not have athletes, coaches, a defensive scheme, ANY KIND OF PRIDE?
I played lacrosse and graduated from UNC IN '77 and I'm as big a fan of our university as anyone. I pull for the Heels in every sport; always have and always will. However, these young men and older coaches better dig deep inside themselves and find something quick to resolve this kind of debacle. There is NO reason, ZERO, NONE, FULL STOP, PERIOD that we should perform like that defensively. They need to openly apologize to their offensive teammates and get their shit together TODAY.

You know, there is no reason the defense can't get it together. We're 2-0 with a QB that looks like the next Tom Brady.

Obviously we can play decent D for periods of time as evidenced by shutting down App state for a fairly long time after they scored on their first 3 drives.

Then the D fell apart in the 4th quarter. Penalties also made a big difference.

So we've got a lot of work to do and to toughen up on the defensive side of the ball but it's not like we can't get there.

I love our short and mid passing gm. Nesbit has amazing mits, Downs and co with Maye's touch and reaction.

Long-down passing gm might wilt vs better defenses. Pass pro from Nesbit, the younger RBs and all the OL seems ok but suspect.

Run game isn't dominant, can't be counted on picking up short yardage vs anyone, but it is good for a few explosive plays to keep the D honest.

I really like our two linebackers. And Vohasek. I think Murphy looks close to being really likeable.

Everyone else on D looks injured or lazy or lacking fire or technique or prep, or slow & weak.... I don't know.

They looked slow and yet they aren't. Playing slow shows a lack of twitch, energy or something.

At this juncture I'd expect more from Des Evans. Didn't note how often Rucker was in but he did make a good play or 2. Collins did as well.

And technique can make you look kinda slow (and weak) too. If your pad-level is too high, or your reaction to the snap is slow, or you are confused about which shoulder to hit then that will make you look less effective or weaker too. We were told "simplifying" the D would help with reaction though.

6-6 is a generous prediction.

Not with this offense. We probably beat Ga State to get to 3-0 and still play Duke and GA Tech who have looked terrible the past few years. Va Tech lost to ODU. UVA haven’t exactly looked like world beaters either.

I'm staying at 6-6 and feeling generous with it. The defense is worse than ever. I'll be surprised if it's 6-6, frankly.

Well I hope we win more than that. If they find a way to win 8 or 9 games the media hype train is going to roll back into town and be talking about they can be great if the defense is better next year. I’m not sure how many fans fully realize how prolific this offense is going to be for a few years.

I think most of us who follow football closely know that the offense is well positioned to be a beast. But we also fear the failures of the D, and by now, most of us should have major worries about old age Mack being up to the job. I think Mack sincerely believes that his BFF D position coach trio of Bly, Thigpen, and Cross is about as good as can be found.

It might be a great offense. I haven't seen them play a decent defense yet.

The defense is completely non-existent. I didn't think it would be worse than it has been, but it clearly has gotten worse.

Mack mentioned in his press conference recently that they haven’t gotten decent defensive push since he’s been here. I would imagine a replacement for cross is at least being considered. Bly is extremely valuable to recruiting and Warren is supposedly gifted at coaching up the DB’s. Maybe a shift in responsibilities for coaching the DB’s would be helpful.

Oh it’s going to be great. We have an elite QB, elite RB’s and several elite WR’s. All of these guys are young too. Unless the OL is completely terrible this will be one of the best offenses in college football for the next few years.

I believe that Nick Saban or Kirby Smart could take this UNC roster, not use anyone that started on defense the first two games and field a better defense than what was on the field at App. State.

not gonna learn much this week…ga. st. qb is worse than(won’t name names) a kid that played qb under bunting.

I rest my case! lol

The sad thing is when I watched the replay for the most part the defense is very basic. Not like it's too complex and guys are confused on assignments.

was trying to think back to vic’s run here as the d-c and what was worse to this point…lol help?

look at the talent now compared to then under “smart, fast, physical”.

ECU a yr or two skull-fvcked us all over the field.
GT was always a nightmare.
The bowl vs Baylor was horrific (a chizik team).

They were like clinics on how to NOT play defense.

You'd think that somewhere along the line we'd have to get lucky with ONE defensive system that was mediocre.

Was Chizik the DC for that Baylor bowl loss???

Sheezus! They drug that defense up and down the field. It was pitiful.

It's really surprising since Mack's teams in the 90s were defensive MONSTERS, most of the time. I still remember holding VT to 3 points in the last bowl game when he was there! His defenses were bad muthers.

The OL hasn't been all that great so far. Lots of new faces, so maybe it is too early to tell. Barnes looked a little better vs App than FAMU in my opinion, but our OT's are only so-so laterally and Montilus looks slow pulling or finding someone second-level.

I predict the offense being really good, but not great this yr, held back by OL talent.

We didn't have Nazair for that bowl game and he was a 3rd rounder on a team lacking DL size/experience/talent, but still, it was u g l y.

I’m more thinking the next few years with Drake and these young skills position guys. They’re going to put up some crazy numbers.

Getting back to Vic, i kinda feel those performances vs ECU were a tad worse. App state missed some dudes on passes, but we also came up with a few stops mid-game. I feel like ECU never punted 2 yrs straight.

I hope so. However, when they play a team with a good defense, it's going to be a different story.

The ND game will be a perfect insight into how bad it can get. ND is going to embarrass UNC.

I don't think Maye will have long at all, but it doesn't take much time for Down or Nesbit to open and have their hands ready. We might as well not even try to run the ball though. The "run to keep the linebackers honest" will just be a "run to get yourself behind the chains".

I think we can probably beat GA St, VT and the dookies. But, the rest? I wouldn't count on any of them as wins. I wouldn't count on the three I just mentioned as wins, either. There are NO easy wins for this team!

ND, Miami, Pitt, Wake and NCSU are all losses. Ga Tech & UVA are games I can't predict, but UVA is in Charlottesville so I'll say it's a loss. Ga Tech is at home, so that might help. That gets us to 6-6.

IIRC, Mack had departed for Texas when we played that bowl game, and Torbush was the interim head coach for that game. We won easily and that factored in to his being hired as head coach. Torbush had a good run as DC but was no head coach.

It's early, time to find their way, but the 1st two games were extremely unimpressive.

Drake is draft eligible after next year, so best case scenario we get one more year. That's assuming he doesn't transfer to an SEC team to win a championship.

On TOS, Greg Barnes has observed that when Chizik came the last time, he was allowed to remake the entire defensive staff as he wanted. Barnes then says that perhaps that id what should have been done this time.

If you feel confident that kindly ole dancing grandpa Mack has your back no matter what the players under your charge do and don't do, then nothing Chizik says to you can matter much. There is no incentive for you to become a better position coach. Likewise, your players will come to the same conclusion: their position coach is safe by being Mack's BFF, so as players of a BFF they also are safe and don't need to sweat.

Mack Brown at UNC part 2 easily could become a lingering nightmare of at times embarrassing mediocrity if Bubba and others do not force Mack's hands. Mack is far too soft, too tended-hearted, toward his former players and other BFFs to sort out failures on his staff.

Dook looked much batter against Temple than it looked all of last year.

You are correct that Mack had left. VT had less than 200 yards of total offense. I'm thinking at the half VT had like 50 yards of total offense.

like I said recently...where is Carl Torbush now that we REALLY need him. In that period of time, at one point (and briefly) we had the third highest number of ex-players in the NFL You can find a grainy and highly abbreviated youtube of that VT bowl game, and I've watched it a hundred times. It's worth looking it up just to see one tackle at the line of scrimmage in particular. You'll know it when you see it.

And when you see it, you'll maybe think like me that the problem isn't just S&C or scheme or even talent...it's mostly having the right attitude.

Other then Mack's first run as HC, defense has been awful, and it does not seem to bother them. Hard to take the next step being that vulnerable every time the opponent has the ball.

where are the unblockable quinton couples, robert quinn, martin, and mcadoos?…and to an extent, the lb’s and corners weren’t as highly ranked then as now either.

burney was a stud and fs williams as well…just nothing showing up, zero leadership…nobody it seems, at this point anyway, is taking this like someone stole something from you.

we have corners? They better grow up fast 'cause Ga St. can beat us, easily, if we're not careful.
Drake and the crew will have to score us to W's apparently.
