Spurrier retires, effective immediately!

One of the 10-15 best to ever coach in college. Hated the way he treated Mack Brown professionally, but no doubting that he could beat yours w/ his, or beat his w/ yours, better than almost anyone.

I'm hearing that he kicked Brandon Wilds off their team, was told by the AD that he couldn't do that, and he then told them to shove it, he was done.

That from a SCar source. I cannot verify. But it sounds like the OBS....

Will never forget those classic lines about Tennessee, and the Citrus Bowl?

He's one of the few coaches out there that didn't try to be politically correct at his press conferences which was refreshing!

He was the perfect coach for 4 teams I despise.

That's the best thing I can say about him.

Good riddance.

It's hard to believe he is leaving mid-season but someone on ESPN board speculated he wanted to keep his 30 something seasons non losing streak alive. He probably was dreading that azz whoopin' Clemson is going to lay on them at the end of year. SoCar could lose out and we may need to focus on some recruits that we can poach cause it's going to be open season. paging Pete Leota.....

I'll miss Ole Shiny Pants...his twisting lips, grimaces, visor throwing. One less guy to cheer against.

He never won a game in Tallahassee, but made a fierce rivalry that much better.

He was not politically correct, could not be managed, and had a plethora of other qualities that I liked...but I loved to cheer against him in every game he coached.

Also Blackshear has been tweeting that he regrets signing with SoCar and that has people at SoCar in an uproar. I think he was part of the class last year or the year before when they had 4-5 guys that they had trouble getting eligible.

sounds like a coach in durham. Always thinking about himself.

Well, IF he just told their team yesterday, then Blackshear's tweets are irrelevant to OBS' leaving. Knowing the Blackshear situation (injuries, recruitment, his stealing, exoneration via the lady who pressed charges refusing to testify, and what that implies, etc.) as I do, Blackshear only gives a rip about Blackshear.

The Wilds rumor makes sense, as that sounds like OBS. I sure hope it isn't health related. Prayers to the OBS.

snowball effect of an egotistical coach having to deal with egotistical prep stars.

My mom is a Florida grad and attended several classes with Spurrier. The day he was hired at UF, she removed her Gators license plate frame from her car and only put it back on when he left for the Redskins job. LOL.
That says a lot !

Back when there was the infinitesimal chance that UNC was considering hiring him.... I swear I would've quit pulling for the Heels football team until he was gone. There are some coaches that despite their jack-assism, I would be thrilled to have in Chapel Hill (Harbaugh, Meyer, Saban) but not the OBC.

Actually saw the Leota kid play Friday night, he is tough, a really nice kid until he steps between the lines.

There was WAY MORE than an "infinitesimal chance" that we were going to hire him. Had Bunting not pulled the Miami miracle, it was going to happen. OBS openly lobbied for the job. And by that time, Bad-odor was so gun-shy being burned on searches (Donnan, Beamer, Roy the first time) that he wouldn't have resisted a Hall of Famer who wanted the job.

Yeah, that's my understanding as well. Maybe I shouldn't have celebrated so hard about Barth hitting that game-winning field goal. :(

If Spurrier had come to Chapel Hill, we would have won a couple ACC championships by now, he'd still be winning and everyone in this thread would be loving him and our program.

hey, i love him...don't like how he did this, but he's a top five coach of all-time.

There is some chatter that Kirby Smart is interested in the SoCar job. Anybody buy that?

I see Smart as too, well, smart and well connected to take the SoCar job. There are boosters at both UGA and Bama who want him as their next HC. I could see Miami looking very closely at Smart

Dude has always been a no class POS in my book that ran up the score every chance he got...Now quitting on your team mid season just because they are down...Sounds like a Front Runner to me...Hell with the Old Ball Sac....

I hold no personal animosity against the guy, but I would have lost a LOT of respect for anyone at UNC who would've hired him after what he did when he was at dook. I NEVER liked the guy after that and, though I don't wish him any ill health or harm, I am certainly not going to shed a tear for him now. Great coach? Of course. His wins, NC and turning a little carolina team into a top 20 team proved that. Woddy Hayes was a great coach, too. Wouldn't want him either.

I don't really harbor any ill will towards little carolina either, aside from the fact their fans are quite loathsome at times, especially when they try to call themselves "Carolina". Other than that, I really don't care either way.

I will never forget the SNL skit with Belushi as Woody Hayes.....just hilarious.

HBC made it clear in his presser today that he did not RETIRE, he resigned.

That the only reason I enjoyed watching him. Ass or not he was a good football coach. Now when the rumor of him coming to Carolina. I wasn't excited. Just didn't want him here.

As much as everyone probally would hate to admit. You are right.

Oh I would've paid his plane ticket, paid his first meal, and let him sign a copy of said picture for me if we had hired him like we should have. Dang you Barth Miami game. Spurrier would've dominated here. Why? He would've actually been able to recruit a QB here.
