I was going more high level with the "win at all costs" demeanor of Northerners compared to the more "go with the flow" demeanor of Southerners.
Or.... it could be chalked up to, by 1864, Union army recruiters having to wait for Irish immigrant boats to show up, meeting said immigrants at the gangway and saying "Welcome to America, boys. Time to fight for your freedom" and shipping them down South. Pound for pound, the South kicked the crap out of the North in the war.

I don't see why you care though. Your ancestors weren't even in this country yet. All mine were fighting in gray.

I was a Sr. Manager with Andersen Consulting/Accenture and was there for about 8 years. The one thing they could have done in Office Space to truly capture the gist of consulting...they should have added another consultant each day and at the end should've been about 8 consultants in the room with most of them looking like they're straight out of college.

In other words, the win at all costs mentality I previously referenced.

That's a cute consolation prize, maybe you should have gotten more pounds.

I don't see why you care though.
I don't, I just know that you do for some reason.

Your ancestors weren't even in this country yet.
What gives you that impression?

I'm going to go see him on Monday- his office is about 2 hours away and he has 2 other people working there.

Do I tell him beforehand that I am coming up to talk? Or just show up in the office?

Yes it would be out of the norm. However if I tell him I'm coming, he will want to know what's up
Hedge and call him from the road, like 20 minutes before you're there. Then you can both warn him you're coming, but also avoid telling him why. "Hey, I'll be there in just a few minutes."
