...and I'm gonna make this one brief as I have to be up for another road trip in the a.m. and the predictable even later than late start

- This one presented one of those awkward match-up games where Chaminade was a bunch of tweeners --- smaller up front but bigger at Guard, and likely one reason KW got the start. Sure enough Nate had a hard time guarding head-up and got in foul trouble (although that call on him on a good block-out was utter garbage). To his credit came back with a strong second half on both ends of the floor, with 3 Steals thrown in. We're gonna need that.

- Nice plays followed by "freshman moments" from the freshman. BRob did some good offensive things before his injury.

- A Stilman White sighting--- 'bout time (s'all I'm sayin'). We scored 10 points (incl 4 from him) in his 3 first half minutes.

- Hicks dominating as he should and not playing down --- 22 pts.

- Dog Kennedy all ya want. Big fella scored 8 in a row in the first half, mostly on pure effort. Howz 20 and 10 grab ya?

- JB established himself right off the bat. In our first 4 possessions he notched an Assist, a Steal, a Rebound and a 3, and later on his one TO he ran the guy down and knocked the ball off his leg to get it back. Roy gave the little dog a chance to rest most of the second half. Good thing. We're gonna need him for some big minutes the next two days. Still finished with 4 Assists (5 Blown) and 4 Steals, plus 4 more Caused TOs

- We were more efficient --- only 11 Blown Assists that didn't lead to fouls.

- Kenny Williams is all over the court... constantly busted his butt, especially that blocked shot at the end of the first half.

-Arright, Roy might hafta just can the "small" lineup til Theo gets back. Didn't go well once again, and gets especially sketchy when the freshmen are in.

- Tony had a nice 14 and 8, and in the second half got his first minutes at the 4 tonight (see above for the reason).

- Defensive intensity was on and off and we were loose with the ball which plays right into the hands of teams like this.

Anyway, scored 104 and on we go!...

We dominated in a game where we should have. Looks like Brandon and Tony both played well off the bench, and Britt had his moments as well.

Much tougher game coming up against the Cowboys tonight.

Tony looks awesome. Meeks and Hicks played great love Kenny Williams all around game. But Woods continues to struggle. Britt needs too backup the point and hate too say it but feel better with White running the point than Woods.

OK, our front dominated and it should have, their big man starters were both 6'7", feed our size and it should not have been close and it was not. Our bigs were extremely efficient and again, with that size advantage we should have been.

I am a little concerned with our guard play right now, Charm hit 10 treys to our 7, Oky st should be expected to be much better than that. While Roy may have rested Joel a good bit in that second half, Joel seems to be a bit off since getting to the islands, we will need him to be Joel tonight. Nate seems to be our guard that brought his game with him, found a lil foul trouble last night but we need Nate to continue stepping up. 7th is proving he is a freshman, flashes but not consistent, play thru it with effort young man, the rest will take care of itself. Kenny is just an all around player that gives us what we need but does not stat stuff, we need him to take his defensive assignment tonight and stay in his guys jock.

We really need to force Oky st to start their offense way early, defensive intensity, hawk them hard, don't give them anything easy. BRob a lil dinged up, stitches in his mouth, that is not fun and it is less fun today than it was last night.

We still have a solid size advantage tonight but we face a much better shooting team from the outside that rolled up 98 last night. They love to run, normally that tends to play in to our hands because our big men run the floor so well. Their guards seem to see a big basket and ours so far in this tourney have been a lil off kilter. This one has me a bit worried, this one could well have some drama and we will need the best guard play we have had so far in Hawaii or this one may not end like we want.

Dave, many of their 3s were shot from somewhere near Oahu, and while his shot wasn't as deadly as it has been, JB ran the machine like a pro, was his usual disruptive force on D and made sure the game was properly out of hand before Roy gave him an early night off. Honestly besides missing Theo and Luke my biggest concern is the current backup situation at point.

I finally got to watch the 2nd half.

I wonder how often we'll see that 5-guard lineup again. Probably never. Or maybe against BC.

In case anyone missed it, for a few minutes before Roy started clearing the bench, this was the squad on the floor

Stilman
Seventh
Nate
Kenny
Brandon

I wasn't paying attention to the score at that point but I think they might have added to the lead.

Since several people had previously mentioned it, I looked for bad attitude and facial expressions from 7th. Sorry, I'm just not seeing it. Sure, he looked serious - but that's good.

I have not yet seen the game (have it on DVR and will watch it tonight) so I can not agree or disagree with anyone's perception of this game. But from the box score it does not read like what we have seen from Joel until this trip. It isn't that I am worried about Joel, I am not but it does seem like maybe he is struggling more than usual due to the time lag. I mean they are playing right now way later than normal and now will have to play on back to back nights, kinda stuff that messes with your timing. Maybe that is why Roy limited him in that second half, to give him some time to catch up.

My concern so far is what I talked about as needing to be a key for us this off season, I really want us to get more scoring from our 2 guard spot. I feel like both Kenny and Nate have played really well so far in every aspect outside of putting points up. Our schedule has not shown that to be a problem so far but tonight is a solid test even with our size advantage. Okey St is a lil Villinova like IMO, gonna be interesting to see how we take that challenge on.

Does the dawg come out tonight or do we fade in the face of a strong challenge?

I notice that Hicks, Meeks and Bradley played a combined 65 minutes. Since I am not good at looking for such things, who played the other 15 minutes as a big? Justin? I know there were a couple of minutes with a 5-guard lineup and a couple more when the bench was cleared, but what about the rest of the time?

I mean it makes sense (size-wise) that it would be Justin. If so, who was in with him when he was being big? Who was the other big, and who was our SF?

Tried going small with JJ playing 4 (not good), which is why we saw TB at 4 later. Rest was mix and match with gane out of hand

Classic example of box scores being misleading. For example Nate had an ugly first half but a really good second half. And JB had his normal statistical first half but only played just over 6 min in the second, and even there added a couple more dimes and steals, was a nasty dog on D and got the rock where it was supposed to be til it was game-over and able to call it an early night.

But you are correct in that tonight we are gonna need our four main perimeter guys to play well and stay outta foul trouble.

Berry hasn't looked as quick to me in the last 2 games. I tend to think he may be nursing a foot or ankle. I hope that lousy fall he took last night did not set him back for our next several games. We need JB at his best to continue to win.

I thought Berry looked fine last night. First couple of possessions he had an assist, a steal, a three, and a defensive rebound. He missed a couple shots, and didn't get to the hole or out in front on the break a ton, but I wasn't concerned about him. I agree with what Gary said earlier, our biggest issue is backup point. Such a dropoff from Berry to Woods (which is to be expected and I think will get better as we go). Fortunately, I think Roy will continue to let Woods develop in the early part of the season, but when it comes to crunch time in big games, if Woods still hasn't clicked, we'll rely on Britt to handle the critical backup point duties, and he'll be just fine in that role.

Woods, if he is not healthy need to just rest after this tourney. We cant go small ball because JJ is not tough enough on the board or D. He just doesn't have that dog mentally in his DNA like Theo. Berry looked good, he miss some shots but they where good shots. Hicks, TB, and Meeks look good. No complaints about KW, Brob, or white.

Feed the beasts folks. They had no answer for our bigs so why not keep dunking it inside? Balance scoring it will be folks. We have 6 players averaging in double figures. This is how you win championships.

It would do wonders for 7th to get off the ball so he can play and not think.

I agree with this. He shows flashes-that reverse layup although it wasnt the best dexision was almost the best play Ive seen in a long time. And he shows bursts with that spin move where he looks other worldly. But PG in roys system Is brutal to learn especially if your nursing an injury... Id say put Britt at pg and let 7th work off the ball some when Berry is out.

Guys, Roy is developing depth. Heaven forbid but if Joel were to get hurt, we'd be in a world of hurt with Nate our only experienced PG. Yes, PG is the toughest position to learn at UNC. But if 7th has a shot at the next level, it will have to be at PG, and I think he knows that. Let him struggle right now when we have Joel as the primary PG, so that he is prepared to assume that role next year if he has to. Makes perfect sense to me.

And if he struggles too much, we have Nate to use there as needed. He's still not healthy and his ups and downs are to be expected. It's trial by fire right now. But eventually he will be healthy, the game will slow down for him, and he will feel more comfortable. Patience is the order of the day, as it is for Brandon. But both have shown flashes of what they can do.
