...and that's a damned good win, sometimes in spite of ourselves!

stats
- Here's the one that jumps out, and considering the size we were up against is pretty damned amazing --- We out-rebounded them 56-34, AND held those big jokers to only 9 Offensive Boards. Wow! Prolly the difference in the game. Meanwhile we managed 21 Offensive Boards. Impressive.

- They are a strong defensive team and make you work. We attacked more off the dribble today than I can remember in a long time. We only had 12 Assists on 31 made FGs, but that's kinda the way the game was playing out. They were hawking passing lanes and daring us to drive. We did. We won.

- How bout some Luke Maye? With Tony being out I worried about their length. Luke had a tough shooting day but worked his ass off and came out with 15 Rebounds, not to mention 2 of the prettiest length-of-the court Assists you're ever gonna see.

- 10 Fast Break and 24 Secondary Break points (many of those willed by JB).

- Somebody musta challenged Mr. Hicks today because he came out smokin' ---- aggressive from the tip, taking it right at those Nole bigguns and cashed in. 22 pts, 7 Rebounds, 3 Assists and a big 12/14 from the line.

- Buckets was Buckets --- 22 Points and made some impossible shots, including maybe the highest Floater in history right over their 7'4 guy.

- And welcome home, Theo F***ing Pinson! The disruptor was everywhere and cashed in a Double-Double with 12 and 10, plus was a neat 5/6 from the FT line, many of them late.

- Final good numbers --- the best player on the floor (as usual). Joel Berry. Scored 26 and seemingly every one came at a key time. Meanwhile, dog held XRM to 6 pts (and 5 TOs).

- BAD BAD number --- and had we lost, this would have cost us the game: We left no fewer than 20 Pts. on the floor in the Second Half alone by missing chippies! Yeah sometimes there was contact and we got a few back at the line but most were just empty misses where we didn't finish.

- Bad number for them --- fortunately the Noles helped our cause by leaving a lotta points at the FT line where they only shot 46.2%!

stuff
- Boy oh boy was there some talent on that floor today. That game was intense from the opening. Looked like it might get a little chippy here and there but the zebras called enough to keep the game under control. I'm sure many of us were happy to see Mike Eades in Louisville . Roger Ayers is generally a decent ref, and while Roy had a couple of go-arounds with one of his colleagues, by and large they called it pretty well. Both teams were in Bonus and Double-Bonus early, and should have been. Fortunately we took better advantage of our ops, especially in the second half.

- Roy was quite creative dealing with their size, even going Ultra-Small late in the first half, with JJ being the tallest guy on the floor. JB, Nate, KW, JJ and Theo finished out the half and did it pretty well. We also went Small because of foul trouble a few times.

- Great key sequences --- Second half Luke plays flawless post defense, moves his feet and doesn't foul, gets the tough rebound then fires the home run pass to JJ. 4 Point turnaround right there, folks. And how about Theo's drive-and-dish in the closing seconds on the first half?

- Speaking of Theo, I've been harping on his psychological need to see a FG go thru the hoop. Welp, seems he had enough of missing so young fella rises up for a Sports Center highlight Tomahawk that absolutely brought the house down. So, as if on cue, a few minutes later at a key moment, he drains a huge 3 on a kick-out late in the shot-clock. I don't know about the rest of you but I was saying "Please go in. Please go in!". #Splash.

- Kennedy made a bone-headed foul on a 3-ball that got him in Roy's doghouse, but big fella had played well up til then

- And JB. I hope all Carolina fans appreciate what we're got in him. After he torched them for 17 in the first, they made a conscious effort to deny him on the return pass in the second half. But whenever he sensed we needed a basket he just made it happen. Dude has a knack for knowing when we need him to score, is fearless and just took it right at the trees. He can create his shot, get to the line and makes his FTs and like so many great UNC PGs can be a one-man fast break when he feels like it.

- Finally... don't know if y'all noticed, but this was one of the most impressive things about today: F$U was gassed in the second half, and I think that accounted for some of their bad FT shooting. They're one of the deepest teams in the country yet we had more in the tank down the stretch. #Conditioning

Strong, strong win against a big, talented bunch! That oughta get some national media attention :D

Thought this was an amazingly coached game by Roy. Loved the small lineup and how he always seemed to keep a scorer out there while giving the others rest. Add in the foul trouble challenges and it was just a HOF effort by a HOF coach.

No love for Justin the summary? ...just kidding ya...:)

Yep. If I could like that twice I would.
Saw where JB said Coach was laughing when he called out the Ultra-Small lineup :D

Just can't say enough about Theo and Luke .. those guys played a helluva game. Theo is an opposing coaches nightmare because of his athleticism, ball handling and defense. Luke was frikkin' awesome .. played technique against a much bigger front line and got .. what 15 boards ? And his outside threat/makes opened up the lane for some opportunities for others. What a great team win. Theo makes this team so much different !!

First, excellent recap gary, we absolutely on the same sheet of music with this one! Kudos!

This game defies logic, it was the classic case of a smaller quicker team taking it to a bigger but slower team. I shared prior to this game, that was our advantage that we had to exploit and we sure as heck did just that. But consider, FSU has 2 really long big 7ft guys, they have 6 guys that stand 6'8" or taller , read they are the second longest team in D-1 this season. Bacon is 6'7", 4 more are 6'6" add that up you get 11 players on that roster that stand 6'6" or longer? WE went in to this game with one single guy at 6'9" in Meeks, Hicks at 6'8, Luke & Justin at 6'7" and Theo at 6'6".

Luke, at 6'7" and not the most athletic guy you will find, 15 freakin rebounds? Theo, at 6'6" 10 freakin rebounds? Hicks 7 rebounds and 22pts? Tony out for the game, Meeks gets in to serious foul trouble and has what he can do limited? WE won the rebounding battle 56-34? On paper, that should not have happened but the game ain't played on paper. This was not one of those deals where a team goes on the road and lays an egg, this was a case of the better team playing well and just beating it's opponent.

Yet again we see, Roy figure out a way for his team to over come disadvantage as well as Hamilton showing he does a poor job with the talent he has available. Team speed and conditioning beats power and length. Rock crushes scissors but paper covers rock! LOL

As for individual players, want to start off with Hicks, not been the season I think many expected from Hicks but he stepped up huge yesterday, from opening tip! Very late in this game he still had only 3 fouls so he was on the floor and free to play a lil longer. His ability to knock down free throws no matter how much pressure there is at the time, WONDERFUL and CLUTCH!

Joel, that first half was Joel and Hicks, as gary offers, they tried to limit him in that second half but just were not really able to slow him, more tan others got even more involved. Between Joel and Kenny, great job limiting XRM and Mann, HUGE factor in this game!

Luke 15 rebounds, lets put to bed the Luke does not deserve to play at this level stuff, 15 rebounds proves he can. Justin, WoW, not his best shooting night but was 9-17 and 3-5 from trey. Justin makes some of the sweetest V cuts you are going to see. It is pretty darn amazing to see him come around the corner up top, receive the pass and cut so sharp his defender needs a medic and stitches! And then he nails those "buckets bombs" that show his unlimited range! It takes work, it takes big time body control, and it takes great coaching for that to happen.

I felt meeks played pretty well even after getting in to foul trouble, put in big time work battling guys that out lengthed him and tried to back him down, big man played strong even if the stat sheet does not show it all. Kenny was solid defensively but didn't shoot well, Nate played pretty well, worked really hard. Funny moment was Nate switching off and getting stuck with Ojo in the paint and FSU didn't even look to exploit that?

But the man in this game, the difference maker for me in this game, Theo freakin Pinson! Yeah, that dunk was special, yeah great to see him drop that trey, great he made some free throws but his passing and his defense are what just dropped my jaw! Just the raw emotion that kid plays with, he is out there lost in the game, he isn't thinking or second guessing, Theo does not look over his shoulder and wonder if what he just did was OK. That stretch where he went off offensively began by the monster poster dunk, did you notice the emotion from him, his team fed off that emotion. His reaction when he got the call while defending deep in the paint was priceless! And what a first basket of the season for him, that was a 10+ !

Agreed to all comments and shout outs that I have read from coaching, the crowd to individual accomplishments but I'll add one that was alluded to at end of the recap....Kudos to Jonas Sahatrain- we look and act like we are in excellent shape! I'm not sure if strength coaches get the credit they deserve or not but after the State game I realized what he has done to help Meeks and after yesterday I could see what he has done for the entire team.

The down side to playing a large rotation as Roy does or as Hamilton is trying to do is that your key players do not get that stamina to play most of a 40min game. Players struggle to get in to the flow of the game because they are not in it long enough to really get in to it. That means if you are going to play such a deep rotation your team has to be extra conditioned, for those games when guys not used to playing more than short stints have to play more minutes. Our team is extra well conditioned and we see guys having to play longer minutes step up and be able to.

Meeks last game, Luke in this one are a couple examples, Theo seemed to get stronger the more he played. But FSU guys got winded, especially their bigs, they were not conditioned to be able to play the minutes, that does go to coaching and S&C work by the staff. Guys like Joel, Justin, Hicks can play for 40mins or more if OT is needed even if they do not have to and if anything they seem to get stronger when they have to play more minutes. That is a credit to our staff across the board and deserve kudos for it.

And it also goes to show that "looking good on paper" doesn't make you better basketball players or a better team.

I loved the comment above about JBII and coach in the huddle when he called on the uber small lineup, JB said after the game, they looked at each other and just started laughing, the things is, this team is a TEAM dammit. They are gonna have fun and take care of each other, their chemistry is special.
