...and obviously we all wanted to see how the guys would come back, and there was an awful lot of good tonight... and where there wasn't, we made some nice adjustments.
- So much of basketball, like boxing, is about match-ups, and at least for this version of Heels, this game was much more favorable than last game. My biggest concern was the big German kid vs our Frosh and he hurt us early. As the game wore on we made a subtle defensive adjustment to interrupt the high post entries --- our perimeter guys were shading the angles, which helped neutralize him.
- My second biggest concern was UM is what I call a 3-for-2 team, in that they have five guys who can shoot from deep, and giving up 2 points by say, not doubling-down, beats giving up 3s. For the first 7 or 8 minutes I was afraid the worst case was coming to fruition --- their guys couldn't miss!... but eventually "their arms got tired"(as the old joke goes) and their shooting came back to earth.
- Luke. I've been talking about his issues with a consistent release, well tonight Luke-Bird was back, baby! That smooth from-the-shoulder stroke was back in order... you could see it on his FTs early, and it continued into his deep ball. GREAT to see!
- Shout-out to Platek for anther solid showing and very good work on Team-D. And the Berry-Williams backcourt is just a damned nightmare for opponents. We opened the second half on a 19-6 run by the Under-12 and it was fueled by perimeter defense. Even though we didn't get that much in transition tonight (see below), what I loved was that we sped them up in their possessions. Dog just wouldn't let them start their offense, and KW and Theo were hawking everything, That made life easier on our Bigs. Speaking of KW, dude's a charge-drawing machine (without flopping, BTW).
- Speaking of Bigs, Brooks stuggled with their guy early, but big Manley did a credible job when he came in. Both had a better time when the perimeter pressure cut off the entry lanes. Noticably, Huff didn't get in til garbage time. Speaking of Manley, I love his potential once he gets stronger.
- ***WARNING*** Referee reference**** They assigned us a high-profile crew tonight with Roger Ayers (whom I'm always relieved to see), and Mike Eades (who has been back on my good side since he helped us out with a couple of make-up calls in the Natty game), along with Driscoll (who's usually decent). Overall solid game by the zebras.
- Nice wrinkle: Dean for years defaulted to Zone on OB situations under our defensive basket --- it prevents most in-bound play shenanigans --- but it becomes limiting in the 3-point era. Roy has been using a nice wrinkle by lining up in Zone then switching to Man off a signal from JB.
- We played one sequence of Traditional (Brooks/Manley) before the Under-8, and a short stint of Small late in the first half, but other than that we stayed Hybrid.
- On the negative side, BRob had a rough outing in general... Looked out of sorts on both ends.
- Moment of the game for the highlight reel: Manley's behind-the-back save to key a Break, ended by Theo's wrap-around lay-up off a nice lead pass by 7th. #SportsCenter.
stats
- As mentioned above, we didn't get all that many transition ops --- UM did a nice job of recovering plus they were challenging our rebounds and outlets. We only had 7 Fast Break and 27 Secondary Break pts the way I track it, but we were very efficient. I only counted 4 Blown Transition ops before garbage time --- very nice.
- The key tonight offensively was sometimes brilliant half-court execution. There was a clinic going on at times. We made the extra pass and shared the rock with 24 Assists on 34 made FGs. That works... as does 54.8% FGs and 46.8% 3s.
- As mentioned above, Luke's stroke was golden again and 27 pts later... well... what more can you say? And kudos to Kenny for another efficient night from deep --- 3/5 from 3.
- And finally, Joel Berry. I've been harping on that hand-wrap, and it was messing wth his ability to gather the ball off the dribble, which limits effectiveness of pull-ups and drives as well as dishes. The first thing I saw tonight was JB with a bare lead hand and the difference was obvious. And speaking of JB, good lordy, what a defensive performance! Even though he didn't get credit for a Steal, Dog was directly responsible for causing 5 of UM's 10 TOs... plus he got credit for 2 Blocks (and got his hand on a 3-pointer the stat guy missed)... all that to go with a 17-5-5 line.
Anyway... I didn't like how sloppy we got at points in the second half --- and the final margin should've been bigger --- but this one was more like it.
Good bounce-back win.
