...and we did what we had to do and played through it.

Let me get this out of the way and get to more pleasant stuff. The officiating in the first half especially was just gawdawful --- not just the lack of calls, but even the basic mechanics were unacceptable... and Mike Eades --- good grief --- once you signal set to play on an out-of-bounds situation, just give the guy the damned ball. You do NOT pull the ball back unless there's a horn. That sumbitch has done that to us all season, where he pulls the ball away after we go into our play and f***s up the entire sequence. Roy had some choice words for Eades later and the officiating was better in the second half, but still. There was one sequence on the glass where the Pitt guy literally had Brice in a headlock (in MMA it would be called a "rear naked choke"). Nothing. And there's no way a Pitt team should shoot 25 FTs to our 18. Here's the thing though --- this game was called in way to fit Pitt's style and they flat took advantage of that but we played through it. Our guys got tough and did what they had to do.

What we needed to do:
- I said yesterday we needed to protect the defensive glass. Pitt got 11 Offensive Rebounds but honestly many of those were on air-balls or odd bounces. By and large we cleaned the defensive glass and won the rebounding battle 30-25. Calling Pitt "physical" is like calling an ocean "wet" --- we did the job we had to do.

- I also said we needed to finish stronger inside. We did. We had 13 Blown Assists that didn't result in FTs (compared to being in the 20s last game). That ain't too bad, and we finished better at the rim --- and not just our Bigs. Our Perimeter guys were also taking it to the rack strong.

- 40%+ 3-point shooting was a good (and very realistic) goal. I figured something like 6/15 from deep would do the trick. We were 6/14 --- I'll take it!

More good numbers:
- FT shooting again. 16/18 is a winner. That's almost 89%.

- FG shooting. We shot 58.9% FGs for the game (and 61.3% on 2-pt shots). That's more like it. And we were over 61% for the entire second half. That's how you hang 49 pts on em.

- While we didn't get to run as much as we like, we still pushed tempo. The box score numbers are again misleading (as they often are). We actually scored 28 pts. in our transition game --- 8 Fast Break, 20 Secondary Break.

- We had 10 TOs. More than I like, but they were TOs of aggression for the most part. JB and Nate had some that came from simple miscommunications and Marcus tried to force a couple of passes, but by and large we held on to the ball despite several hands usually grabbing and clawing at us. The better news is we had 18 Assists on 33 made FGs.

Kudos:
- Good early minutes from Big Joel.

- Good moves by Roy. Counter-intuitively he went "small" early in the second half and we did pretty well in that. Justin had been having a rough game, but seemed to respond to banging in the 4 hole.

- Speaking of that, Hello, Kenny Williams! With Theo and JJ both gassed, Roy brought in KW at the 3 and he responded. Now, I was gonna write something about him before his big shot. All season I've harped on KW being an advanced defender for a frosh --- well, he showed it. Artis (constant traveling and all) tried to take him to no avail. And then, finally, KW nailed his first trey, and that one was going in as soon as it left his hand. Hope that's the spark that sets him off.

- Speaking of defense, Berry flat did a number on Pitt's very good Sr PG (Happy Feet) Robinson. And speaking of D, our Help D was wayyy better today. Bigs were protecting the rim and perimeter guys were. stepping in. Great sequence late --- after a Timeout, Nate was guarding Robinson, who had already taken him to the rack twice. This time JB was lurking and helped off his man and comes up with one of his 4 Steals. I have a feeling that was discussed on the sideline because we were laying for Robinson's drive.

- Kudos to Theo for big energy, some aggressive attacking and 7 dimes.

- Double-Double (what else is new?) for Brice 19 and 10 (and let's not forget those 5 Blocks).

- I liked the way Marcus' deep stroke looked --- and Roy called a few iso plays for him in clock situations. Good to see.

- Good on Nate for persevering. Got stuffed inside a couple of times but kept attacking and didn't hang his head over Robinson overpowering him on drives. Nate kept fighting and got his hands on some balls on D and made some nice plays and good takes --- did what he had to do.

- And finally JB deservedly "got the chicken" (as we used to say back in the Holly Farms days) --- 20 pts and took over the game at key spots the way a true Lead Guard should. Hit from deep and took it the rack and scored, it seemed, whenever we needed one. When our perimeter guys are scoring they can't pound on our Bigs as much.

Really nice 17 pt. win against a legit tourney team --- let's keep going.....

Your keys:

1. defensive glass
2. 40% from 3
3. finish strong inside

Check, check, and check.

I added:

1. Will take 33% from three if we make 80% of our FT's
2. Hustle plays/beating them to loose balls

Check and check.

Great effort by the Heels. Our defense the last 23 minutes was outstanding.

I am pickin' up what you are layin' down! As usual g-7, that's great intel and spot on observations. I was a little kid when the Holly Farms chicken joints shut down, but I remember them taters though. Good stuff.

Seems more and more like JOel has supplanted Marcus as the undisputed leader of this team. He and Brice are our two most critical players right now. To his credit, Marcus seems to understand that.

Well, I think it's become more of a team thing. Brice has taken a lot more responsibility as the season has worn on, and of course JB, we're watching him assert himself as Lead Guard. Every time he sensed we needed a big bucket or a forced TO he just made it happen. But Marcus is still leading as well, but more quietly as a steadying team guy, as opposed to the guy his teammates just stood around and waited for.

As I said, I liked the late-clock Isolation plays --- Roy used to run those for McCants from the 2 --- and Roy might call them from the bench and/or Marcus has the freedom to call for it from the floor.

The good news in this is that it is starting to feel like most everyone is taking an investment in the team and are showing the confidence to make that extra play on their own. And as I said above I really liked the way our bench attacked the game, especially Theo and Nate.

A key stat for me was minutes played especially going forward against a team with little depth that used a lot of energy to come back like that. Great chance for Heels to pull away late tomorrow

I could write so much good about most of the players tonight. Gary, great comments. A couple guys I'll specifically give props to as well....

Isaiah Hicks 3-3 FG 4-5 FT 4 rebounds.... and "only" 2 fouls in 19 minutes. At that pace he could almost play 30+ minutes if needed :)

But I just love the way he is super quick, aggressive, and smoooth / under control in finishing. A couple times he even gave an Olajwan type dream shake that just made his guy look foolish, as he threw it down. I love the way he is so solid from FT line too... has improved a ton.

I know Nate was mentioned above for his defense, but he is darn awesome at moving the ball and driving to the rim as well. Money from the FT line too. You also can see him thinking for a split second where they play off him, say early in the shot clock, where in the past he'd just nearly instinctively think "Nat-jacka-3-time".... but now he makes the SMART play, moves the ball, and gets a good or great shot for the team.

Last thing - we talk about the tangible stat lines, etc. on this team. Those are great and necessary. It may be just me being biased, but it really looks and seems to me like all these guys like each other a ton, I'd say even love each other, and are totally invested in everyone succeeding as a team. Part of it you see, when lesser playing time players like Kenny hit a shot or make a big play... the regulars go wild way more than if they made a play themselves.

Plus - just overall, this team has some of the prettiest passing of any team I can remember. Beautiful basketball the way it was meant to be..... vs. other teams that slow it down a ton, play a lot of iso ball for their single star, and / or just rely on jacking up 3s.

I AM NOT SAYING this team has the talent or separation of Golden State or the Spurs. But the STYLE of uptempo, highly focused on ball and player movement - is successful and fun to watch. Its how the game is meant to be played, IMO. In that way Roy's style and this Heels team is like GSW and the Spurs.

I meant to mention this but check out this move. Hicks has developed a face-up game few college Bigs have.
Watch the sweet "drop-step" simultaneous to picking up his dribble that gets him to the rim. It is a luxury to be able to get the ball to a Big outside the block and let him go to work like that.

Really nice high low entry pass by Brice who then rolls to the basket in case his man decides to help on defense. Doris mentioned how well our bigs passed the ball and the unselfishness of our team. We're 6th nationally in total assists and 5th in assists per game. That willingness to share the ball has led us to being 10th in scoring offense and 26th in FG percentage. We're 11th in rebound margin. Throw in the fact that we've improved our team FT% to 73.6%, a weakness the last two years, and you have a darn good offensive team.

If we play defense like we did the last 22 minutes of the game, we can go to the Final Four.

Just think what our Assist totals would be if we were converting at a better rate. Hell, we've had more than one game where we've blown double digit dimes from just JB alone.

∆∆∆

That's exactly right, Gary. We've missed a lot of chippies from point blank range this year, not to mention all the wide open treys we've missed. And our assist total is even more impressive when you consider that we don't have a single guy listed in the top 10 in assists in the ACC. But our unselfishness is epitomized by the fact that Marcus is 11th at 3.7 APG, JOel is 12th at 3.6 APG, Theo is 17th at 3.1 APG, and Nate is 38th at 2.0 APG. And our bigs are very willing passers too.

Arch, I started tracking Blown Assists earlier this season because my eyes were astounded at how many I was casually noticing. Funny true thing is (and Roy has even mentioned it) that sometimes our "assists" are virtually just getting a shot up on he glass and putting it back.

Seriously, I just shake my head at the downright silly comments that, say, JB isn't a good entry passer because he didn't get X number of Assists credited in a given game... complete BS considering he has had several games of literally double-digit assists blown, AND since we share the ball on the interior so well sometime his entries become the pass-that-leads-to-the-Assist.

Could not agree more, Gary.

And I give you and Dave props for saying how good important JOel would be to this team, this year. He is blossoming before our very eyes, becoming a leader offensively and setting the tone defensively.

I think some of our fans saw him as overrated, but he's raised the level of his play so much that I doubt many are thinking that now. Of course the maroons on DI still say that but what do they know?

OK, so I need to re-read the rule book because I actually thought the hip check was an illegal defensive move? Clearly it was not yesterday if you wore a Pitt jersey. The question is not did they get away with a bunch of them, the real question was did they actully have a trip down to the defensive end where they did not drop a hip check or 2 on our guys? Every time one of our guards would drive they would be hip checked, it was blatent and it was inexcusable!

GREAT GAME JOEL BERRY, the JUNK YARD DAWG was HOWLIN ! That kid is just tuff as a waffle house steak, blue collar kid that just brings it every game. His imprint has taken hold on this team, we as a whole are playing with a good bit more grit and not so much head hangin when things are not going well. Pitt took the opening tip and hit us in the face but the grit with this team just kept working, kept fighting thru the 'interesting" manner the refs called this game, we just tuffed it out and in the end the fact that we had rest and Pitt did not showed up and we pulled away.

Todays games will be interesting, who will have their legs now that everyone played yesterday? ND having to go to OT to win that emotional game against duke, how much did that take out of them? UVa looked very sharp, especially Brogden but will they be able to play at that same level having played a late game yesterday? They depend so much on their rotations coming very quickly on the pass, will it be there as quick on legs that are tired?

This much I do know, so sweet watching that punk Gayson Allen cryin and K giving him that man hug, oh my, that was sweet...

Dave, all I can say is "amen". Not one single call on those hockey check hedges.

Dad and I were watching and we both noticed the incessant hip check/leg bars Pitt was throwing with NO CALLS!

Funny, but ALL our guys (especially our Bigs) have been pounded with that call most of this season, even when we were set before the opponent got there. But as a team we have had very few of those calls go our way. Heck, we have had very few of ANY calls go our way.

The pace we play and the way we so much of our offense and scoring happens INSIDE the paint we should be shooting far more FTs than we are, and ALWAYS shooting more than our opponents.

The ACC Ref-rolling of UNC continues unabated. I don't know if we just have a buncha UNC haters on the job, or if there has been a silent decision to "punish" UNC for our "sins" via biased officiating. Somethings up though, and has been for a while.

My main displeasure with Roy is that he doesn't let the refs hear it loud and clear when our team is getting jobbed by the officials.

It does start to seem like a pattern at times. The hedge hip check was supposed to be one of the points of emphasis. Guess not when it comes to having it done to us.
I will say Roy gave Eades an ear full and things got a bit better in the second half, but again, there is no way a Pitt team should ever shoot more FTs than us.

Glad that this didn't matter but recall when late a Pitt guy was cutting into the lane and ran straight into Joel James. It was like a water balloon hitting a brick wall. Joel wrongly got called for a foul but mainly because Joel barely recognized a Pitt guy hit him. And the Pitt guy went down in a heap. You could see the other Heels on the floor having a hard time stifling the laughs about that event.
