...a listless game, for lack of a better term. Just when it looked like we would click and pull away we would do something bad to keep them in it. In particular our Bigs just looked tentative inside. Now granted, Syracuse played us a bit differently than they normally do. Anytime we got the ball to a middle entry, they backed off to the blocks instead of challenging (to prevent the hi-lo passes we killed them with last time). That seemed to flummox our guys --- instead of taking the ball hard to the rack or shooting with confidence we were hesitating and short-arming inside.

Anyway, I'll start with the good, because there's not as much as there needs to be.

- We held them to 41% FGs and forced 15 TOs. Although there were a couple of breakdowns, there were many times when we played really good defense and there was better help from the Bigs on drives. No better example of that than a key sequence when we were only up 3 late and on a Gbinije drive, Berry attacks his ball hand and forces a spin to the paint and Hicks steps in and goes straight up to smother the drive and we get the rebound. There were several instances of solid team D tonight.

- Brice got himself in foul trouble (only played 24 minutes) and too often was not showing himself to the ball well enough, but the big fella stepped up late on the offensive glass and put-backs, and his great long outlet triggered a key run-out by JJ. Brice led us with 10 boards (5 offensive).

- We shot the 3-ball well in the first half

- Marcus, despite a rough shooting night, had a terrific passing night in transition and wing entries.with 8 Assists

- When Roy finally got us working the short corners, Justin did some nice work on floaters and baseline entries.

- We finally got to the line in the second half because we attacked the rim more.

- After some puzzling early moments, Kennedy did make a succession of key mid-range shots in the second half and was 4-4 from the line.

- Nice board work by Luke in the first half (3 rebounds in 6 minutes) --- we needed it.

- Another dogged defensive effort by JB. Had 2 Steals, drew 2 charges (coulda been 3), and caused 2 more TOs and kicked in 5 Defensive Boards (on a night when they were much needed).

The bad:

- We left SO many points on the floor. Good grief. I counted 18 Blown Assists that didn't result in FTs. And our Bigs were too often volley-balling on the offensive glass instead of grabbing and dunking.

- We made zero 3-pointers in the second half. Ouch.

- We missed too many FTs (again)... not horrible (13-19) but not what we've been used to.

- Good thing we played some D, because we only shot 41% from the field. That came from two things: Our awful second-half perimeter shooting and not finishing at the rim with any consistency.

- We've GOT to stop leaving our feet against Bigs on the perimeter. Hicks and Theo got caught on that a couple of times each.

- We got too careless with the ball --- JB overshot an alley-oop and a pitch-ahead lob pass, Nate got himself caught in no-man's land a couple of times and turned it over and we forced some interior passes. Also, sometimes we just didn't catch the ball well. 13 TOs ain't what this team is supposed to do.

- Here's the number that drives me friggin crazy --- I realize we went small at times but there is no excuse for us allowing 12 Offensive Rebounds. That just can't happen. Accordingly, only two of our guys had more than 2 Defensive Rebounds, and one of them was our dadgummed PG.

- Finally, I counted 14 (true) Fast Break points (most on Steals) and only 9 Secondary Break points. We just couldn't get our transition game going consistently. Why? We didn't control the defensive glass. That's gotta get better.

Anyway, it's a win on Senior Night... Let's play better Saturday.

This game scared me going in, it took a great game from Brice passing big to big for us to take them at their place and betting on that happening again is maybe not smart. Syracuse adjusted and we struggled with that. I did think it being senior night that we would be up for this game and in some ways that was true, I felt we defended pretty darn well with a decent degree of intensity for the most part.

But it is always hard to play a team you beat solid the first time in the same season, there is always payback and they know what you do really well. teams adjust to what you did to them, they adjust to the talent of your players and it becomes which team can adjust the most to counter, I would suggest the Cuse adjusted a bit better than we did.

The cuse was coming off a nice home game win over the wuffies and traveled to us but we were coming off a tuff road loss to UVa and both of these happened sat, meaning short turn around game where at best we got in real early sunday morning so doutbful we got much of a practice in where the cuse would have been able to get a practice in and then travel to us, it makes a difference especially on quick turn around games. Our schedule has done us few favors in this second half and not just the teams we have played but when and where we have played them. IN tourney play the quick turn around games even out because they all have the same deal but it is hard this time of the season to come off a road loss and get the quick turn around monday game and be ready for a team as unique as syracuse and especially so if Bohiem adjusts to what ya did to them last time.

What does disappoint me is 2 teams with very little bench and we have not really exploited that advantage we have with our deep bench by amping up the break game and working to get their bigs out of the game with fouls. We didn't do that vs duke and we didn't do that last night, bunch of the cuse players had 3 fouls early second half, really need to attack them then and limit the jump shots fellas.

Marcus did seem more comfortable with the ball inhis hands more, Roy made him PG A and Joel PG B (2 guard) and even thou marcus did struggle to shoot, shot selection is a problem with him because he is rushing that shot and it is flatter than it used to be, little more arch and a little less rush and I think his shots would drop like they have in the past.

I watched that game and I kept asking myself who is the player of the game for us? This morning I am still asking the same question and still have the not sure answer. Maybe Brice because he did step up late but this was not the best of Brice by any means. I do know this, we will have to play much better vs duke to win our last regular season game and I think we will do exactly that. We have a bus ride to them so we should be rested, we should be able to get some good practice time in this week (the benifit of a short turn around game is you have that extra couple days to get ready). I think we will be ready for duke and I don't think that is good if you a dukie fan. I think we beat them by double digits frankly, watch & see!

The inability to build on leads and put teams away is very concerning. It seems like we get a working lead and then come up empty on 4-6 straight possessions to let them back in.

We sure do, often due to taking quick threes. After a couple of bad possessions(poor shots/TO's), I call a TO if I'm the coach. If we're getting good shots, I probably let them play on. Regardless, I would never let a double digit lead evaporate without calling at least one TO. Of course, I had this beef with Coach Smith too.

And if a guy like Brice is hot, I put a saddle on him and ride him like a horse until the opponent shows they can stop him. We've lost at least a couple of games this year for failing to do that. When Kennedy made a couple of foul line jumpers and came up with a steal I'm a very nice 3-4 minute stretch, I certainly wouldn't take him out. Kennedy looked puzzled when he was pulled, and rightfully so.

Barring severe foul trouble or a blowout, I'd like to see an iron eight rotation.

Starters: JOel/Marcus/JJ/Brice/Isaiah
Bench: Nate/Theo/Kennedy

Well Arch, maybe not so much puzzled as gassed ;).

Seriously, as for not building on leads the trend I've noticed is more about other things, e.g., allowing a second-chance bucket, a goofy turnover, fumbling an offensive put-back opportunity, missing a chippy, that sort of thing. Momentum killers. We've missed some damned good looks to extend leads as well.
