...and I'm gonna do these a bit differently to concentrate on my keys to our tourney success. They are as follows: Scoring in transition; Being locked in on D; FT shooting: JB being aggressive. I'll start with other stuff then end with the keys.
- OK. This was a warm-up game against an overmatched opponent, so you want to come out focused, put up triple digits, and not get anybody hurt
. I'm not gonna tell you what I threw when JB came down on that dude's foot --- I'll only say it wasn't living.
- JJ's shot looked great --- the arc was back and he wasn't forcing.
- Welcome back, Nate. I've been saying for the last 2 months we would need a deep threat from him off the bench and he knocked down a couple of open 3s today. Good sign.
- I won't bore you with the normal box score #s but of course we dominated inside and doubled them on the boards --- it woulda been hard not to. They had no answer for our 4 and 5-men.
- I hope that Stilman's early run presages an expanded role going forward. 6 pts 3 Rebounds 2 Steals and an Assist in just 9 minutes.
- Officiating: I've been watching officiating very closely these first two days, and of course it's a mixed bag. Some very well-called games, some stinkers, and much in between. Today, ours was noticably well-done. Only found myself critiquing out loud a couple of times and nothing egregious. Hell, even LES JONES called a good game. Guess he either felt guilty about that dook debacle or he figured this one didn't matter.![Wink ;) ;)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Keys
- Transition game: First the good news --- We mostly didn't have to run a half-court offense. We scored 63 pts (!) on our Secondary Break action. Hell, I believe we only ran 4 set plays all night (not counting out-of-bounds). Now the bad news --- We blew 18 Assists, and most were in transition, as were most of our 10 TOs (which were mostly careless passing). Granted, we followed up and converted some of the Blown Assists by getting Offensive Rebounds, but we still netted 12 Blown Transition opportunities. Too many!
- Defensive intensity: Considering it's tough to stay on point against a weirdly-sized and overmatched opponent, we mostly covered our responsibilities. Still, there were enough lapses that I'm sure Roy will have some comments for the guys.
- FTs: OK we ended up at 73%, but that was padded late, and after a good start we went through a jag while the game was still being contested where our misses were. Still looking for better.
- JB: Dog got off to a slow shooting start, but was totally in charge and looked locked in and like he was ready and willing to do whatever he needed to today. Good to see him get back out after the scare, and looked like he was moving ok. Let's hope!
- So, somehow we draw Arkansas again in the NCAAs. I was hoping for Seton Hall ---- much easier out for us IMO. We know the deal with Arky --- they're gonna foul us. We need them called and we need to convert if and when they are. They also have size. Our Bigs need to be ready for a physical war, so if our perimeter guys can deliver enough from deep, that will make life much easier.
