Ooof. This is not a good look. Hubert says one thing and Styles basically refutes it. I can't imagine Styles is coming back now.
Yeah, I would for sure say this does not look like Styles has a future at UNC...

Am I missing something? When did Hubert say the team voted not to play? That was said by posters on this board.
I couldn't find any direct quote from HD about a player vote. This was stated by Inside Carolina (3/13/2023):

"What’s known, according to Inside Carolina reporting, is that players were asked to anonymously give their preference about playing in the NIT. The majority did not want to play."

I listened to the Hubert Davis Live radio show from last night, and he clearly stated that it was his decision alone not to be involved in the NIT. There was no mention of a player vote.

That's good to hear. It would have really been bad to have a player saying the exact opposite of what the head coach was saying. Thanks for the report.

This is exactly why the AD and Hubert should have had a short press conference to address the media. Stop hiding behind your desk and be transparent when you make a decision like this. This team and program needs more leadership than what has been shown over the last year.

From the OP article.

"Styles, a 6–6, 210-pound sophomore wing from Kinston, watched the selection show from his room, then found out the season was over during a team meeting afterward."

During Styles's freshman season I thought he looked very athletic but probably needed a year or 2 to "get there."

Then we saw even less of him this season. His game appearances were cut in half - 30 down to 15 - as were his minutes played - 175 down to 89.

He seems too short to play PF on a regular basis (just my opinion). And he's sitting behind Puff in the SF pecking order. Moreover, I fully expect Hubert to try to fill PF and SF from the portal.

It looks to me like Styles would be better off transferring. But what do I know? Apparently thinking some players would be better off somewhere else means I'm not a real fan.

Well HD only played 5 guys so I assume 3 said they didn’t want to play and that was that. Heck he probably only asked Armando if he was healthy enough to play and he said no and that was the end of the vote.

Any clue to who UNC is looking at in the portal? I am seeing good players listing who have contacted them and haven't seen UNC listed for anyone.

If Hubert made the decision on his own then I 100% change my stance. Terrible look on HD and maybe he isn’t the right man for the job.

Styles really embarrassed himself with some of his statements in interviews today. He wants to be congratulated for not transferring midseason. He was mainly concerned about showcasing his game in the NIT.

I probably should just stop there before I get heated and reveal just how he played in practice this year, or what my coach friend told me.

Why would you try and get our player to transfer?

Just now read a article from USA Today that Dunn’s dad, Love’s dad and Puff’s dad ALL SAID the players had voted not to go and play in the NIT. Looks like someone has some explaining to do…

I didn't say I wanted him to transfer. I said he (Styles) gave an interview where he said he was proud of himself for not transferring midseason, claiming a lot of players transfer midseason.

Then he went on to say he wanted to play in the NIT to showcase his game.

Same USA Today article where they quoted some random person that said future selection committees should penalize UNC for turning down the NIT in 2023.

Amazing journalism.

I hope styles returns
I hope he spends the offseason working on the deficiencies that kept him off the court this year. He was our 7th man in the NCAA tournament last year. After the offseason he became our 10th man as a sophomore. That was directly a result of the lack of work he put in during the offseason.

It wasn't a random person. I would think someone with your type of Intel would know that.

Those were some pretty crazy comments. Either those three are considering transferring or it's going to be awkward for them when next season starts. I probably wouldn't be happy with my dad if I was them.

You're right. It was disgraced former coach Tom Penders. I said it was a random person because most people don't know who Tom Penders is, how he disgraced himself during his career, and it's random as hell that he'd chime in to offer such a dumb opinion.

Remember when Thad Young's dad wouldn't let him commit on his visit to UNC, then had a meltdown when Brandan Wright took the last scholarship, and Thad Young had to publicly apologize for his dad?

USA Today knows how to stir the pot.

He wasn't the only one and that implies a problem at the top not the players. In case you are wondering I'm hoping Hubert reads this board and take our advise and resigns.

It's not quite stooping to the level of this board, but I once saw a really famous coach who's a household name in football reading a pre-season football preview magazine in Barnes & Noble. Really funny to see a coach reading what a bunch of media talking heads think about teams in their own sport!
