Styles says Hubert made the decision not to play in the NIT

I'm not sure this is something we can recover from with out a change. This he said she said is a huge redflag to recruits.

I hope I don't get accused or trying to get recruits to decommit?

He wasn't the only one and that implies a problem at the top not the players.
Players not working on their weaknesses during the 6 month offseason is 100% on those players. NCAA rules strictly limit the time coaches can work with players in the offseason.
Styles showing up this fall unable to dribble is on him. Just like Walton showing up last year with a bunch of useless stuff he learned from a trainer, but could not actually do in games. On the flip side, a guy like Raymond Felton used his final offseason at UNC to fix his shooting form. He hired a shooting coach (and he didn't have NIL money like our current players) and ended up shooting a career high his junior season.

It's is on the player to a certain extent but it's up to the staff to install the mentality to want to get better.

There has never been a year I can remember under Dean or Roy where not one player on the team got better or improved their game in the off season. Sure there were some here and there but never an entire group. You can keep them blinders on if you would like, but anyone can see it!

1. It's not up to any coach to "install the mentality to want to get better." Players have to make that decision on their own. Roy couldn't convince Will Graves to put basketball before marijuana. Dean couldn't convince Clifford Rozier to play defense.

2. Despite your hyperbole, players on this team did get better from last year. D'Marco Dunn worked his butt off in the offseason. He improved his FG%, 3pt%, and defense. He was rewarded by seeing his minutes increase from 94 mins as a frosh to 276 mins as a sophomore.

You have no room to accuse anyone of wearing blinders when you have such an inaccurate and warped view.

You're right. It was disgraced former coach Tom Penders. I said it was a random person because most people don't know who Tom Penders is, how he disgraced himself during his career, and it's random as hell that he'd chime in to offer such a dumb opinion.
Penders could never coach his own teams to any real success but he's an expert on how this program should be run

And he's an expert on how the NCAA should punish teams for turning down the NIT apparently.

Journalism has been replaced by sensationalism in a lot of instances. The fact Tom Penders was quoted in this article is just pathetic.

And so did the team as a whole in some areas.
We had less TO's offensively and created more Steals defensively.
Small increases in each case but it was still on the positive side as compared to last year.

You should be penalized for being a useless, tiresome jackass. This was an ill-conceived thread based on an out-of-context, inaccurate take, but of course, you were happy to weigh in on something you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about... as usual.
Everyone come quick Gary and his nut huggers have arrived. Like normal pages of post about this shit show of a coach that was hired and he chooses to attack me!

I know about alot of stuff, I know we didn't make the tournament, I know there are 9 different stories about who did and didn't want to play, and I know 2 players are leaving and there are more to come.

How can't you say the team as a whole improved and yet they will still be in Chapel Hill when the tournament starts.

Are you guys really in this much denial, or just can't stand to admit what most normal people can see?

This will not be news to any reasonable poster here, but you don't know a damned thing about the game of basketball, and even less about coaching it.

As another poster posted so Is eloquently "you don't have to be a chef to know the food don't taste good"

If Hubert doesn't have the character to admit that it was him- if it actually was I'd rather him leave than lie to us. It's a straight coward punk ass move to let everyone think something and hide behind rumor than man up and admit it.

Same USA Today article where they quoted some random person that said future selection committees should penalize UNC for turning down the NIT in 2023.

Amazing journalism.
It was ex coach Tom Penders. Wonder if he critiqued Dook and K for turning the NIT down just two years ago.

Nope, the players had a say. Styles and Love were the only ones we know that expressed a desire to play.

Please post the article where Duke turned down the NIT. If you are smart enough to use the internet
then you may come across the story that the Duke AD Kevin White made a statement prior to Duke’s 3rd round ACC tournament game w Florida State after a player tested positive for Covid that “As a result [the positive test} this will end our season”. NIT did not offer Duke a bid. Duke was on the NCAA bubble as “Last 4 out”. Would they have accepted a bid ? No one knows except a few pro Hubert fans that want to justify Hubert’s decision. Too bad because instead of Michigan vs Vandy in the NIT second round it could have been Vandy at UNC which would have higher ratings than most first round NCAA games. Since when did “The Carolina Way“ use any decision by Duke to justify itself?

I've almost lost the plot at this point.

So let me see if I can recall this: the initial rumor flying around was that there was a vote and it was a majority "NO", but Hubert claimed on a press conference that it was his decision alone? Then, Styles affirms to the radio station that it was indeed Hubert's decision, but then parents of THREE different players came out and said there was a vote after all???

So who's lying here? and whats the motive for doing so?? There would be less backlash had they just gone with either story and stuck to it. FFS, this is Alabama levels of P.R. Disfunction.

Ooof. This is not a good look. Hubert says one thing and Styles basically refutes it. I can't imagine Styles is coming back now.
This is a very bad look. We have a player saying that the coach lied about something important. Either Davis is a weakling liar trying to cover himself, or Styles is poison on a team.

There either is quite a lot of misdirecting, even outright lying, around the program, or else the program is simply enveloped in a state of total confusion. In either case, those at the top are to blame.

I know the programs are in different spot regarding disappointment and culture, etc....but I switched over to see just like the last minute of Wisc / Bradley last night in the NIT, on Wisconsin's home court...Wisconsin won, and the whole vibe seemed pretty darn great - packed house, kids fired up to play, some Wisc kids (seniors?) having great nights and maybe going out in front of home fans on a high note. Seemed totally worth it to play, at least for Wisc and Bradley.

What is different that it should / would be a different atmosphere for our UNC team and the guys who are leaving? I don't see why anything should be different, unless most of the players already have / had a quitter, checked out, done-with-it-all attitude. Which if so is super depressing and a huge program problem.

You are terrible at insults come on over to OOTB and learn how it's done!

I'm really trying to rack my Brain for logic here because this story would've been dead days ago if either Hubert, Styles, or the parents had just left it at what the public line was.

What makes even less sense is that they all seemingly came out against their better interest. Hubert admitting the team voted not to participate takes the heat off of him. Maybe he was trying to take the blame for an already fractured team, but the parents ratted him out? Yet it would've looked better on their children if it had actually been Hubert who made the call. I still can't ascertain why Styles lied, unless he's taking a parting shot at HD on his way out.

This whole thing is absurd. All someone had to do was tell the truth or better yet, JUST SAY NOTHING. Reminds me of back when K straight up lied on TV, claiming he didn't chastise Dillon Brooks after the Oregon game for shooting a late game shot. No one really cared until they made it a thing.

Taking Texas to the Final 8 in 1990 was pretty awesome when they finished 3rd in the SWC that year. And won conf championships.
