Suppose you bet on them every year since Roy got here, placing a $20 bet at the best odds you could get in September (or shortly before each season starts). You had 3 wins in 14 years. How did you do?

I see no scenario where you are not ahead. You probably had 7/10:1 oddish odds last year. 2005 had to of had decently high odds. 2009 would have been the lowest odds. But, you just have to average out to 5:1 odds to make a profit and not very often are odds lower than 5:1

So what you are saying is I should have put a million dollar bet each year for the past 14 years. That means I essentially would be having someone else type this message while I sit on my recently purchased island drinking something with an umbrella in it.

A quick search turned up the following...

05: 10-1 odds. ($200)
09: 3-1 odds. ($60)
17: 16-1 odds ($320)

$580 winnings - $280 = $300

Or UNC-75's plan would have put you $15M ahead!

ETA: that was just a quick search, so as CTT mentions above, I'm sure you could've gotten better odds. Either way, if I had the guts to bet big bucks I'd be sitting pretty right now.
