Even though he primarily covers UVA and VT for a local rag, David Teel is one of my favorite college sports writers. Here's a really good article about how the ACC Network came about.

Haven't seen formercat around here in a while, otherwise I'd stick a finger in his eye. For all his incessant bitching and moaning about Swofford being focused on basketball, Swoff knew exactly what he was doing. First, the conference needed more markets (read: eyeballs) as many of us surmised. Swofford also knew the ACC needed to improve its reputation in football, so he positioned the conference for success and struck when the time was right. Considering all the limitations that come from having so many small, private universities in the conference, Swofford has continued to do a masterful job of guiding the ACC through a critical era.

About a week before the announcement of the ACC network, I was checking a number of ACC boards to see what the talk was, about the upcoming year as well as the network (Teel, who is as good as you say, had already said an announcement was imminent). And what did I find? A Wuffie starting threads bashing Swofford as a lousy commissioner who cheated for UNC and hurt the ACC and needed to be replaced.

And yet we still have plenty of folks on Radar bashing Swofford on the regular. Any Carolina fan who bashes Swofford is a colossal idiot.

I'm not sure why any team's fan base would bash him. There might be some things that he could have handled different in hindsight, but he's done a lot of great things for the conference.

Because there's a lot of idiots in the world. Plus Moo fans can only handle this logic chain and won't accept any other input:

We hate ---> UNC
Swofford attended ---> UNC

I'd be willing to trade Moo for WVU, and WVU fans are really bad.

I'd be willing to trade Moo for WVU, and WVU fans are really bad.

The slogan has a nice ring to it: Dump MooU for Ole WVU.

WVU would do way more for the conference than Moo. Expands the footprint a bit (at least it adds a new albeit small market, rather than the already saturated NC), fills in the geography, reincarnates two rivalries and makes them conference games (VT-WVU and Pitt-WVU). Then it still leaves that spot for Navy to appease ND and suddenly you have a very, very solid coverage of the entire East Coast.

Plus, WVU is actually good at basketball, they have a big fan base (desperately needed in the ACC), good at some Olympic sports like men's soccer traditionally, and they are just as good as Moo at Club sports like rifle and bass fishing. Put them in the Coastal so they'd naturally play Pitt and VT every year.
