Takeaway from the beatdown of the Illini

Truce. But, to be clear, I've now reiterated 3 times that I'm NOT calling for Fed to be fired. Heck, I want him to WIN!

No doubt our redzone O was exemplary last year (had to be, given last year's "D"). I'd like to see those same stats thru the 25% point THIS year. Sure feels like we are throwing it a ton.

And I have no intrinsic objection to a spread philosophy. I just like to see flexibility to recognize when you have found the soft underbelly of a D and make them stop it...if that creates imbalance of touches, so be it. Philosophy adhered to so strictly as to ignore good points at which to deviate becomes rigid dogma.

GO HEELS!

So, so true :( Heck, we HAD to go for it a lot on 4th down in the redzone due to the defense and the kicking situation.

100% agree with this. If something is working, keep doing it by God! Don't get cute and try to out-think the opponent. THAT is why I'm pissed we didn't run Hood. He was the hot hand....get him the ball. I understand why they went with Marquise because he's the 5th year senior and because, statistically, he had dominated in the RZ up to that point........but daggum, run the battering ram that is Elijah Hood.

I, too, want to see flexibility to be able to abandon a gameplan in favor of going with that's working. That is the Fedora regime's biggest weakness thus far, IMO.

Now that's something we can definitely agree on. I've said elsewhere that playcalling diversity for the sake of diversity is stupid. If it's working, keep doing it.

Sure thing. Inside the opponents' 10-yard line in 2015:

Total Plays: 20
Running Plays: 14 (70%)
Passing Plays: 6 (30%)

Total Possessions: 9
TDs Scored: 7 (78% of possessions)
- Rushing TDs: 3 [Hood, Hood, Morris]
- Passing TDs: 4 [Fritts, Fritts, Davis, Proehl]
FGs Scored: 0
Turnovers: 2 (22% of possessions) [you know which ones, ugh]

Numbers are almost identical to 2014 with the obvious exception of the turnovers. It's interesting that we've thrown 6 times inside the 10-yard line with 4 of those going for TDs and the other 2 thrown to the wrong team. Feels like an all-or-nothing gamble, which might explain why passing plays close to the goal line stand out in fans' minds.

You guys attacked me. I simply responded. One of you hit me re: Cut; I answered w/ the facts. One of you said I was making up what many football people thought/said about Fed when we hired him, and cited the source. One of you called it hypocritical to praise some things the offense is doing well while simultaneously criticizing Fed's insistence on doing things offensively in direct contradiction to the things that work well. I simply explained how that accusation is inaccurate.

I came here to talk football, UNC Football to be specific. And unfortunately until he quits w/ the bone-headed stubbornness born of enslavement to his system, Fedora is part of UNC Football. Maybe his coaching will improve. If not, we need to make a change at year's end.

Personally, I think you have made some outstanding points...

I think Fed has done a very solid job navigating us thru a extremely difficult time, from the aspect of the program itself. I have defended him, even when so many were calling for his head, I defended him because the situation was so hard. But from the aspect of he being a game coach and really being a head coach, he makes me wonder at times if he is not better suited to be a position coach, rather than head coach.

Last season for example, how does a head coach allow his D-cord to consistently put such a poor defensive squad on the field and not do something about it IN SEASON. Could he not talk to the defensive players and understand what was going on with that unit? IT appeared he just refused to assert the authority that every head coach not only has but has to use at times? That defensive unit was in total shambles?

I get that Fed wants to ramp the pace and tire out the defensive opponents but at times when our offense is not clicking the end effect is it is our defensive team that spends more minutes on the field because our offense is 3 & out. To me it is a bit like a baseball pitcher with a 100mph fast ball, if you don't throw a curve or a change up at times it will not matter how fast that ball is hitters will sit on it and nail ya. Modify the pace, ramp it at times but do so as the flo of the game dictates, not because you refuse to consider any other way.

And for the record, when you monster of a tail back has just run the ball down inside the 10, don't put the game in the hands of the QB that has already throw an INT in the end zone that game. One of the most DUMB coaching calls I have EVER seen from a UNC head coach...

I like the cut of UNCGrid's jib. I think his points were pretty accurate and he didn't lash out at anyone until he was under fire. And he'll always have an ally in me if he wants to take on the stupid spread offense.

Grid, you'll have to excuse some of us here on the football board. It's funny, many of our posters posts on the BB board and OOTB with no issues. But then when they get here, their level of insecurity goes through the roof. By your screen name, I assume you'll understand.

Thanks guys, we are all Tar Heels. Basically, we are in agreement broadly, w/ some nuanced differences.

And I don't think the spread is stupid, inherently. Running it in such a fashion that it feels like the head coach thinks he's going to be awarded an extra couple points per possession just based on how fast we can run plays makes no sense to me....the O itself gets out of rhythm and makes mistakes when you do that. (and I know that Fed realizes he doesn't get extra credit).

Interesting, fun question borne of the thread: do you think we'd be 3-0 if Chiz was the HC, and Fed was OC?? Given that would mean Littrell wouldn't be here, I tend to think so. Fed's spread at USM was very run heavy. Not suggesting we do that....Fed is our guy for now, warts and all. And BTW, the Chiz hire was a home run just when Fed needed one.

You mean the Chiz that is 38-38 as a head coach in college...Fact is UNC finally got off there azz and paid good money for a solid DC instead of going to the Sav a Lot....Now the OC I am still not sold on as of yet...Seems we are getting in a lot of 3rd and longs...But hell it could be worse...We could have old Mister Shoop calling plays...

Shoop, ooooh I'm having awful flashbacks. The play action when everyone knew we were passing was even dumber than the warp speed for warp speed's sakes I've been griping about....uh, good point.

Twitter you old fart

I figured. But then that begs the question...why the hell would he be following Shoop on twitter especially if he doesn't like what he says? That's like me ordering Chinese food everyday and complaining that I hate Chinese food.

Absolutely, Cut would've and has done better than Fed....at MORE of a football sh*tstorm than UNC has or likely ever will be, scandal be d@mned. Dook was among the worst football situations in college football for 4 decades (minus 3 OBC years) prior to Cut.

You realize that Cut had a losing record in each of his first 5 seasons? Beyond that, dook relaxed the admission standards for the football team when Cut was hired. Cut has had it better at dook than any other dook coach in the last 30 years.

Fed has had recruiting sanctions, a 6-year investigation, the associated negative recruiting, a hostile press, an apathetic fan base, and tightening admission standards. Oh - and he inherited a team from an interim coach who was recruiting against his employer. The fact that we've been .500 is actually quite the accomplishment.

Has he been perfect? God no. The south Carolina game still ticks me off. Now that the NCAA cloud is behind us (hopefully) and that we have a legitimate defensive staff, we'll see some real improvement over the next few years.

Cut has a 10 and a 9 W season at Dook. Yes, they've helped him w/ scheduling and easier admissions, but since Fed has been at UNC, they've won more (against easier schedules, yes), and even accounting for the mess we've gone thru, Dook is still a tougher job in which to win.

Here's hoping we change the latest trend by doing better than them this year, and repeat last year's beatdown head to head.

Weak sauce bruh- like you have a bunch of OOTBers (who will remain nameless) on ignore.

I follow several UNC detractors on Twitter mainly because i want to know what they are saying. You should really try the twitter machine just for the reads- you dont actually have to post anything- I dont.

He had a 10 and 9 win season in years 6 & 7. Fed has had 3 seasons under his belt. When Fed was hired at UNC, Cut's records were:
  1. 4-8
  2. 5-7
  3. 3-9
  4. 3-9
At the time, no one was saying that Fed was #3 behind Cut and Toby. People say he's behind Cut now, but that's comparing a coach that's 7 years into the job with no obstacles vs a coach that's 3 years in with nothing but obstacles.

Let's see how years 6 and 7 for Fed compares to years 6 & 7 for Cut. I suspect Fed will grade out favorably.

Apples and oranges. Dook football was THE nation's laughingstock when Cut got there. Fed inherited a ton of talent from BD/Withers. Also, the trends, respectively, are heading in the wrong direction, from the UNC perspective. Fed's W totals have declined each year, while Cut's have ascended. Quit making me point out that smarmy old fartface Cut's strengths, please! I can't stand the smug, sore@ss d!ckhead!

Plus, what in Fed's history suggests yrs 6 + 7 are gonna yield favorable numbers to Cut's recent numbers? With the one outlier yr. pulled (his last at USM), Fed is a 5 to 6 L coach, YOY. It's what he is.

He really didn't inherit that much talent - particularly freshmen and sophomores. Butch wasn't able to recruit as well as had been because of the scandal and investigation. Not only was withers unable to recruit with the investigation and the "interim" tag, he was actively recruiting against UNC while still working at UNC.

While Dook had been a laughing stock for 20 years, a large part of it was because of their own admission standards. I knew a guy on the dook board of directors and his consistent argument was that if dook was going to hire another coach, he should be bound to the same standards as their current coach. He always thought it was unfair to label Roof (or whoever it was then) as a failure at dook when he wasn't given the same support. He was, obviously, outvoted.

Gio, Russ Bodine, Travis Bond, Hurst, Renner. Reddick, Sly....not much talent?

And all of that was gone by the end of fed's 2nd year. Which means that his 3rd team was pretty young and thin. And losing 4 guys from the D-line just before the start of last season didn't help.

We're still thin, thanks to the restrictions, but we have some more experience now and you're seeing some of the benefits of that experience in the running game and the defense. I'm not expecting miracles this season. I think we're looking at a 7 or 8 win year. But I expect to see continued improvement in the next few seasons as we get additional bodies and get to the point where we can redshirt more people.

Good point on the personnel losses JUST PRIOR to the 2014 season...very under-reported and under-viewed as part of the D problem. Losing 3 DTs in the 2 deep (incl a starter), and starting RAM Ellerbe was disastrous. As I've opined, UNC was going to be better on D this year to some degree had no coaching changes taken place. Now, the changes NEEDED to happen, don't get me wrong. And the presence of talent helped to attract Chiz, IMO. He knew he could make an immediate impact.

Lots of good discussion going on in this thread. I agree that losing the DLmen we did right before the start of last season was a death knell. Everyone tried to downplay it at the time, but it killed us. Now, even with those guys, our defense would've still been bad.....but you can run the most cockamamie defensive scheme imaginable and still be 'serviceable' if you have a really good DLine.

Basically all defensive schemes sink or swim with the DLine strength. So it's even more of a hats off to Chizik and staff that they've got the defense playing pretty good without virtually any pass rush with just the front four. Man, I can't wait til Dalton gets in the mix, Dinkins and Clarke progress a bit more, etc....mixed with how good our DB's are. Yikes!
