Tar Heels vs. Catamounts game thread

2nd half - Byrd needs to get the ball. And we need to play a host of other guys who have not played.

Is it on TV? Pretty good first half.
I'm watching ESPN Watch. But I am in TN.

Pretty good is an understatement. The offense looks flawless. The D the opening series looked asleep, and then it began to dominate.

'Elliott complete to Ratliff-Williams' needs to be called about 100 times nest year.

Ok they saying he is a Senior on the Radio...
I think he has a redshirt year under his belt. And I'm al but certain the official roster has him as junior.

All the injuries have shown how much talent we have at WR. We have guys who started the year on 4th team who are showing they can play.

We have plenty of receiver talent coming back next year. I hope Ruder is the real deal and puts the QB competition to rest. We will have plenty of weapons to distribute the ball to next year.

I'm pretty excited about the RBs too, and looks like we have another good one coming next year. Got to sure up the O line for any of that to matter though. And hopefully the QB situation works itself out. I think Elliott threw the deep ball much better today than the last couple of games.

Agree with all of that.

IMO Elliott looks good enough to run the offense effectively next year if we can put together a solid o-line. We have FIVE RS sophomore offensive linemen hopefully returning next year. Obviously there is some position overlap, but that is an entire unit worth of guys with three years of college football under their belts. Plus McCargo who will be a RS sophomore.

Elliott can reads defenses well enough for ARW and co to put up a lot of points. But I'm holding out hope that Jace Ruder will end up taking the starting job. Simply because to do that as a true freshman he would have to be a legit talent. We have a ton of wide receiver talent, and a solid running back group, so if the o-line comes together then the job should be fairly easy for whoever the QB is.

Guys tend to come back ready to work hard after a rough season, especially if they had to watch from the sidelines because they were injured. Hopefully they will get after it in the weight room and practice, and are ready to do work come next fall.

p.s. 17 juniors/seniors will be coming back on defense as well. Unless there is attrition

Good write up uncboy - the offense could be on the comeback if the O line comes together. The D is making improvements but we could use a couple more impact players. Special teams should be good next year.

How salty were you that Surratt got in and looked good?
Salty?

I didn't see it. I had a meeting to make.

That Surratt could do something against WCU does not mean that Byrd could not.

Let's recap: During Spring, all 3 looked roughly even to most observers, with most also agreeing that Elliott had at least a notch above the other two. Fall camp starts, and Fedora has decided that his #1 is Harris and his #1B is Surratt, and Elliott and Byrd deserve no playing time unless the other two are hurt.

Elliott definitely is a better QB than Surratt. Circumstances forced Fedora to play Elliott, or we never would have been able to see it. And most of you would have assumed that Fedora knew what he was doing, and that therefore Harris certainly was much better than Elliott.

For all we know, Byrd could be better than Elliott. I don't think Fedora wants us to see that he was a total idiot about 2 QBs this season. So I expect Byrd to stay buried.

Question #1 - Can we get what we need this Spring and Fall Camp in OL coaching with Kapilovic as OC?

Question #2 - Is Kapilovic a good enough OC to oversee all that this offense could be next year?

Question #3 - Is the D staff stable for next year?

Very good ?s...

Myself I would like Fed to just be the OC and let Kap coach the Oline....

It's more than a few HC that do that and they win a lot...

Next Saturday should give us a better idea of where we are and what needs to happen before next season. We still have lot of guys out and I'm hoping that 36 and 23 can play. We are playing better but we are also playing some of our weakest competition the last 2 weeks. We'll see how the O line and D line stand up against State. I hope we look good and beat them down.

Good questions.

I think Fed should take over the play calling and take less of a role in the defense so that he can commit more of his own time to the offense. Of course we need a D.C. who can operate with autonomy for that to work. So to answer your first two questions, no I don't think that Kap should remain the OC, and I'm not even sure he should stay on the staff as our o-line coach for that matter. If he is the right man for the job then he needs to be focused on the o-line because developing that unit is arguably the top priority for this off season.

We definitely need the defensive staff to be stable. We've shown improvement despite the injuries, and at times the defense has singlehandedly kept us in games. Maybe we have enough talent for a solid unit in 2018. My biggest concern with coaching on that side of the ball is our corner play. Our DB's have had terrible coverage fundamentals ever since Fed got here.
