The tweet response in the article was perfect:
“'We regret that this became an issue,' said the people who made it an issue."
ESPN: we regret this is an issue
Again, hate to be the wet blanket, but they gave Mr. Lee the option to back out and he did. They didn't force him out.
I love bagging on ESPN as much as anyone but I can see their point here:
An ESPN executive later wrote to Yashar Ali of New York Magazine and said that the network never worried about offending people.
Ali tweeted this message from the unnamed executive:
“This wasn’t about offending anyone. It was about the reasonable possibility that because of his name he wold be subjected to memes and jokes and who knows what else. Think about it. Robert Lee comes to town to do a game in Charlottesville. The reaction to our switching a young, anonymous play by play guy for a streamed ACC game is off the charts — reasonable proof that the meme/joke possibility was real.
“So, when the protests in Charlottesville were happening, we raised with him the notion of switching games. Something we do all the time. We didn’t make him. We asked him. Eventually we mutually agreed to switch.
“No biggie until someone leaked it to embarrass us and him. They got their way.
“No politically correct efforts. No race issues. Just trying to be supportive of a young guy who felt it best to avoid the potential zoo.”
Poasted this in another thread but don't let it get in the way of your faux outrage

I'm not outraged about it. It's just a dumb situation. Don't let this post get in the way of your faux assumptions.Poasted this in another thread but don't let it get in the way of your faux outrage
It's not dumb. It's just a decision made by all parties. Maybe staying on would have been less of an issue. But I could see it blowing up more than it is now too.I'm not outraged about it. It's just a dumb situation. Don't let this post get in the way of your faux assumptions.
I poasted this in another thread:
You're a blooming idiot.
Well, I didn't poast exactly that in another thread but I should have.
Do you have a link to that? Not just their PR statement that alleges that, but actual proof? Even though it's not proof, I'd even take a statement by Lee corroborating it, even though that could easily be part of the deal of him retaining his job is going along with it publicly.
Most of the world seems to think it's dumb. It's not dumb. It's just a decision made by all parties. Maybe staying on would have been less of an issue. But I could see it blowing up more than it is now too.
