Syrace, Uconn, SMU, Louisville, OSU, USC were all examples of DIRECT INVOLVEMENT of the coaching staffs to NCAA violations that come under the NCAA guidelines to punish. That is not the case with UNC, at least that is not the case with Men's basketball and football as it applies to the AFAM stuff. Now that is not just what the NCAA said initially but remains their position AFTER the independent studies were released. WE saw that in the NOA and the delay after the NOA was released is only because we self reported an issue in soccer that required the NOA to include that sport as well.
But it was clear with the NOA, we gonna get the Lack of institutional control and that is probation and fine but the NOA was specific in acknowledging that men's basketball coaching staff was NOT directly involved. You do not post season ban, eliminate games already played, disallow banners already won, or cut scholarships without DIRECT involvement from the staffs.
The NCAA would dearly LOVE to hammer our basketball and football men's teams because they are getting a double ton of pressure by the media, by rival program fans, and by politicians to hammer us. But they know, if they hammer the men's basketball program they are just going to end up in court and lose on their lack of any authority over the quality of classes a school offers its athletes and any other students, the case is ONLY valid if proof is there that coaches guided players in to these classes and that proof does not exist for men's basketball. The NCAA is fully aware of this so their hands are tied no matter how much external pressure they get. They learned from the Paterno situation and once bitten are now twice shy.
