The Lord Stanley Cup playoffs thread

and the preds aren't going anywhere...they are $17 million under the cap, compared to my blackhawks who are $960,000 over the cap.

gm bowman made some gigantic mistakes with deals the last six years so purging or trading prospects is the way they have to play now...i really don't want to end up like the red wings.

I feel like if they wouldn't have made that terrible replay call, which the NHL still hasn't answered for appropriately, the Preds would have won game 1.

That offside reversal of a goal rule is the worst use of replay in sports, IMO. It just doesn't make any sense. I get it if a guy is on a breakaway or an odd man rush and goes in offside and scores on that rush like 2 or 3 seconds after going in offside - but when he's just gaining the zone and the whole defense sets and they're passing the puck around in the zone and a goal happens 15+ seconds later - then it doesn't really matter that a guys skate might have been a milometer off the ice going in.

It should be called like the red line on icing. If you're in the vicinity of the red line, you're good. If the linesman can't definitively see that you're offside going in - you should be called on. The NHL wants more goals - and then they go and take goals off the board on replays for essentially no reason.

Great job by Hornqvist on his goal. Frustrating for Nashville fans to see Crosby be able to do what he did with no consequence and to have two crucial goals taken away by garbage officiating. Sucks to be f'ed at home by calls but Pens are a great team.

Back-To-Back in the salary cap era.... Nashville had a heck of a run as the last seed in West.... Go Pens!!!!

saint Cindy should never have been In this game after his assault on Subban in game 5 but hey the NHL LOVES Pittsburgh and tonight's egregious officiating blunder, one of the worst you will ever see, is just the latest gift to the hallowed Pens and Saint Cindy .what a douchebag he is the quintessential dookie on skates .... hell he even LOOKS like JJ Reddick.... were they separated at birth???

Tainted title after tonight's gift from the refs

That disallowed goal was such a blunder. Not really sure what they could have done because the whistle definitely came before the puck ended up in the net, but just a sliver of common sense would show that no one stopped playing and the puck was going in regardless.

Great seasons for both teams - I'm not at all confident about the Bruins knocking the Pens off their pedestal next year.

Its just a game so no sense of getting into a pissing Contest about the whistle but the ref was doing as instructed and blew the whistle because he lost sight of the puck.... Players continue to skate and fight all the time after the whistle is blown and clearly even during the live play u could hear the whistle on the telecast before Sissons stick touched the puck..

Actually, there is a rule where they can go to replay and if they rule the whistle didn't impact play (IOW, the goal happens immediately and no one stopped playing) then the goal is to be allowed. Just complete incompetence to not even go to replay and look at it. Kind of fit with the other decisions made in the series though.

How can u tell whether a player/goalie pulls up if whistle blows??

Well, considering the whistle blew as Sissons was pushing the puck in there is really nothing to tell. No one continuing or stopping would have any impact. It was just a another screwup by the officials.

Ok, we will disagree about the outcome and officials aren't supposed to make mistakes in any sports... And just like in basketball it's an unreviewable play once the whistle is blown

But that is not correct. The NHL's own rules say you can review it. On NHL official was talking about it on the radio here today. You can disagree on whether or not they should have overturned it. You can say the whistle mattered. You can't 'agree to disagree' on whether or not it was a reviewable play though.

We agree on the outcome anyway. The Pens won. That isn't changing. They also got three huge favors in the series that doesn't shine a positive light on the league in terms of fairness and being unbiased. That doesn't change the outcome.

I don't think the NHL was biased for the Penguins. If anything they probably wanted Nashville to win because Pittsburgh won last year and it would help solidify what appeared to be a pretty engaged budding fan base.

It's not the NBA where they rig for the best players to make and win the Finals every year.

The offside in game 1, the quick whistle in game 6, wondering what the 3rd favor was??

Heck in the NBA there are only between 2 and 4 teams capable of winning the whole thing when the season starts in October

Bad penalty by Oshie late in the second period allowed Vegas to score on PP.

I have been a caps fan since the beginning in
1974 ...been thru it all.... bad times and a few good ones but a ton of heartache and massive playoff failures and choke jobs.

This year was to be a down year after the last few but lo and behold they make a spectacular run thru the playoffs and win their very first Finals game tonight in an absolute thriller with Holtby making perhaps the greatest save in caps history at the 1 minute mark of the period, with Vegas putting massive pressure on.

Saturday night here in DC is gonna be a madhouse and I am really looking forward to game 3

GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a save by Holtby. I want this to be a great series, so Iโ€™m happy the Caps took one on the road and would like to see Vegas do the same.

I want the Caps to win because of Trotz and also because I think the way the NHL ran the expansion draft very poorly. Screw the Knights.

What didn't you like about it? I think they gave them a little more talent than they wanted to, but all in all it seemed ok. I think it'd be cool if they won it all. It would show that pretty much any team can win any year, which the casual fan would be receptive of.

Currently in the NBA there's only one team that can win it all, and in the MLB there's a group of maybe 4 that have a realistic chance of winning it all in a given year. The NFL is closer with 6 or 7 that have a shot preseason, but if legitimately over half the field have a shot to win the cup at the start of the season that should be good for viewership and interest.

Thatโ€™s awesome, what a postseason for Ovechkin. I loved him getting into it with Fleury pregame too. You could tell how much he wanted the Cup.

A big CONGRATS to our Washington Caps for winning the Championship . . it was an awesome game to watch last night.

I know this is a Tar Heel board and I bleed the blue as much as anyone and have since 1972. But I have to say this title makes me so happy and proud of this team. The bitter disappointments, the choke jobs, the missed opportunities we have had to go thru are all worth it now. They make this victory all the sweeter. This celebration of the CUP here in DC is gonna be terrific.

I used to love watching hockey as a kid, but lost interest in the sport as I got older. This year, I watched a lot of playoff games and really enjoyed it. It's kind of nice to not know which teams will be competing for the championship before the playoffs even begin. While I'm glad that the Capitals won the Cup, I'm a little sad that Hockey is over now. I plan on following the entire season more next year.

I have never posted on this board before, but saw this thread and wanted to note that I spoke with Coach Papuchis on Friday about the Caps winning. He grew up in the DC area on the Maryland side and is ecstatic about the Caps winning the Cup. He said he's "a diehard" and has been for years. He's tweeted some about it in recent weeks, which got my attention he was a Caps fan.

I can assure you that he is NOT alone. This city is absolutely Cup crazy and the parade this Tuesday, and yeah I will be there, is expected to draw at least 250K, perhaps many many more .What a thrilling time here in DC as a long time Caps fan.

Most of my friends whom I grew up with and hung out with before moving down here have been going nuts over it. I used to go to about 8-10 Caps games a year. Saw some ugly playoff games, too. I enjoyed watching them win the Cup.
