Wow what a movie! Unbelievable action sequences. I've NEVER seen a movie capture the feeling of the wilderness like this one. I actually got cold from watching certain scenes. The bear attack which combines cgi and real bear footage is the most realistic depiction you'll see. Much better movie than star wars. After u see it google the story its based on. Its actually more incredible than the movie version.

I keep hearing that this is a movie you should see in the theaters. I'm a fan of DiCaprio, who many think will win an Oscar with his effort in Revenant. Tom Hardy is suppose to be excellent in this flick as well.

Rotten Tomatoes' audience rating is at 87%.

Going to see it this weekend. SO FREAKING EXCITED. I've wanted to see this thing ever since I saw the trailer for it at the James Bond movie.

ETA: the girl I'm taking insisted that she could handle it. She's a horse-rider and I told her straight-up that he kills a horse for warmth in the movie. I thought she was going to die when I told her. She still claims she can handle the movie though. We'll see.....lol

Is this a Tinder chick? And if so and she doesnt like the horse scene, does Tinder etiquette allow you to pull up the app and go back to swiping during the movie? How does all this work anyways?

Yes it's a tinder chick. And I've accidentally checked my phone during a date before and had the "you have a new match!" message clear as day on my phone.

The whole thing is an obstacle course of land mines and trip wires.

Also, I still have not seen this movie and that pisses me off.

Watched it this afternoon, and man is it a gut-punch of a movie. It's such an interesting combination of the pros and cons of nature, in that there is some really beautiful shots contrasted with such brutality like the bear attack. You can tell DiCaprio really wants that Oscar, but it would be hard to deny him. I was also very impressed with Tom Hardy in his role. Although, I wouldn't call it "better" than Star Wars, but I didn't wait my whole life for this movie either. It's gotta be the front-runner for Best Picture, but I wonder if the fact this director won for Birdman last year will make it harder to win.

I saw the movie this afternoon with my wife. It really drags in places and pays way too much attention to detail at times. I think it could have easily been shortened by 30 minutes and still had the same overall effect. We sat down just before 12:30 and walked out just before 3:30. Too long!

Finally saw it yesterday. HOLY CRAP. I agree with @heelmanwilm it is an awesome, awesome movie.

Leo and Tom Hardy are both amazing in it. And the brutality is so intense and awesome. The opening Indian attack scene is crazy intense. Just a really, really good movie.

It's been a really, really awful week already. To make myself feel better, I'm going to go watch Leonardo DiCaprio get mauled by a bear tonight.
You'll like the flick. Definitely a man movie. Plus it's got little survival / outdoorsy tricks in it that you'll enjoy as an outdoorsy guy yourself. One that comes to mind is Leo constructs a little rock wall in a stream as a choke point to lure fish in. I'd seen this on Survivorman (I think) so it was cool seeing stuff like that in the film.

I often wonder how long I could survive in the wild with nothing but my wits and maybe a pocketknife. I could probably procure food and shelter but would contract Giardia from the water and s*** myself to death.

In the fall of 1994, I was backpacking in the Adirondacks with about 15 people. There was a place where the trail rounded a large rock ledge, so another guy and I decided to scale down the rock and bushwhack for a while. After about 5 minutes of wandering through the forest, we came across what was obviously somebody's "home": a large tarp stretched over an area that included a bed made of pine needles, a couple skillets, and a few small personal items. We ran like hell. No telling what that guy was about or how he'd feel about us discovering his hideout.

Here on the beach we had the "ft fisher hermit". He lived in an old ww2 bomb shelter right on the beach. He never begged but lived off the ocean and a garden he planted (though visitors often gave him donation). The locals and tourists loved him and sought him out for his witty sayings. but the police and govt wanted him gone and local drunks harrassed him after hours a lot. It was rumored he had thousands of dollars stashed. One day he was found dead on top of a pile of garbage. Despite numerous self defense wounds and body drag marks from the water to the pile of trash his death was ruled anheart attack and efforts to get the police to investigate were useless. He was prob beaten and tortured to try and get his money which came to about $100 in loose change found hidden in the wall.

I lived most of my childhood in the Wilmington area and remember the FF hermit very well, saw him several times. Forgot that he had been murdered, um, I mean had a heart attack. Sad.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed that. It seems there's nothing DiCaprio doesn't do well. Is he the best actor of his generation? And as others have said, Hardy was incredible as the antagonist. I wanted to choke the life out of that SOB about 15 minutes into the movie.

The scenery was so awesome that I had to see where it was filmed. Here's an outstanding rundown of all the filming locations (no spoilers): http://www.atlasofwonders.com/2016/01/the-revenant-filming-locations.html

Glad you liked it cuz I really really enjoyed it. Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't some of it filmed in Tierra Del Fuego? That's supposed to be one of the cruelest, least inhabitable places on earth.

I've never been to the Bad Lands in Calgary, but I've driven thru / walked around them in North and South Dakota. It's impossible to pass thru ... until real roads were built. I would not have wanted to be traveling back in the day and come across any of these areas. It would have been a death sentence.

That thought crosses my mind any time I'm traveling in the western U.S. I try to imagine what a family or traveling party with horses and covered wagons would have thought when they ran into (mountains, rivers, deserts, fill in the blank _____).

Yup. See the last picture from the link I posted. Beautiful, but inhospitable.
Yeah I couldn't read the article when I posted that. But I can read it now. Maybe I'm thinking of a different place/region. I know Les Stroud went to some place (thought it was T d F) that was just brutal and he was saying pretty much all attempts at settlement there usually failed because people got sick of the conditions.

Just watched The Revenant on pay-per-view, and... WOW! What an intense movie, with unbelievable cinematography; not to mention the tremendous performances by Leo and Hardy.

I know this story is based on Hugh Glass, and some of the events that happened during that time period, but its not 100% accurate. That being said, did anyone else think that the ending meant that Glass dies (after seeing the vision of his wife, and letting out a deep exhale as the screen fades to black)?

Yep that was my take. He died at the end. Finally.

tom hardy should be the next bond, he's fantastic...and thank you to the person on ootb that recommended the drop to me...love that movie.

other than that, this movie seemed way over the top and really didn't move me...thought fassbender was better as a leading role and the big short was better...i didn't see spotlight, which won.

Spotlight is okay. Not theatre worthy though. Agree on the drop.
