WW, I think it is time to make "chicken salad", time to maximize what we have and stop all the "what we don't have" stuff. I will give you the step by step.
It begins with realizing, this is simply not a big time jump shooting team, we have guys that can get hot but consistency game by game just not a big time group of jump shooters. I believe we have 5 BIG TIME guards (the 3 starters and Drake & Jack) but only 1 that is a serious knock down jump shooter and he is the focus of every defense we will face. What our collective of guards can do and do at a very high level is drive and either finish or slip to a cutter. But opposing coaches know that & do everything they can to clog up those driving lanes, you have to get some of the bodies out of the lane so our drivers are not having to contend with off side shot blockers. On the offensive end far to often we are playing 3 on 5, we MUST attack 5 on 5.
That means we have to turn our non-threat big men in to threats to score. UCLA game, did you notice what got UCLA a early 6-2 lead on us, it was back to back trail man step in treys from the UCLA big man. Did you notice that Lubin had the assignment to guard that big man and on both of those treys Lubin was tip toeing toward the shooter so that even had he missed our big man was way out of position to board a miss. Do you recall what sank us in our last game vs bama last season, it was their use of their big men as shooters.
IN the holes we have dug in first halves this season that got us so far behind, 2 things stick out for me. First very little movement on our offensive end (the ball was going side to side not front and backand big men hurting us with jump shots on the defensive end or guys getting wide open looks because our guards miss a switch.
So I think step one is being able to drag the opposing big men out of the paint because we don't have that Bacot like body able to physically battle in the deep paint. Of the big men we have, who among them would be considered our best jump shooter, I don't think it is close, I clearly feel that guy is Jalen. But Jalen is not playing well, I agree he isn't, the very few jumpers he has taken lately seem to be half hearted efforts, not confident strokes. Seems now if he misses a shot he is pulled and benched for most of the game. His screens of late have as well been half hearted, many times not even a screen but a ghost screen? It is hard to watch.
I contend that Hubert has to get Jalen aside one on one and tell him, from this point on I need you to become a major cog in our offensive attack, I believe in you and I believe in you as a shooter, I want you shooting the ball, basically the same thing you know Hubert has told Tyson. When you get position for a jump shot that you feel good about I want you to take it, I will tell our guards to look for you but there are 2 things that YOU MUST do. 1, you MUST move your feet and get in to position that you can score and your guards have passing lanes to you, yo must communicate with them. Second, you take those shots I know you can make, you have to make them so I need to putting up as many jumpers as you can to get back your shooting mojo.
Next, got to have a talk with JWit, I need to reduce the number of treys you are taking, what I need you to do is to work with Jalen, he steps outside you cut hard thru the lane, either set a screen off for your driver or look for the catch and finish at the rim, you will set this place on fire doing that. If you have to put the ball on the floor for more than 2 dribbles STOP and pass it because you are getting stripped constantly and that is leading to break outs for the opponents. I am going to back BOTH you and Jalen up with Lubin, will bring Claude in for situational situations when I need some bully ball. JWit, I am not going to get upset if you pick up a foul but when you do make sure they have ot pay a price for it, those heap out front fouls have to stop and make darn sure if you foul a guy in scoring position, make sure that shot does not go in for a and 1, send that physical message nothing comes easy.
From there let our 5 big time guards do what they do, drive one on one and not have so worry as much about back side help.
