THI Podcast: What Happened With UNC & Andrej Stojaković?

The amount of money we've already spent and how little we officially have left both blew my mind.

If I heard correctly and am adding right, we had $12 million to build our team - including returners, incoming frosh, and portal players. And nearly all of it is gone.

Moreover, it sounds like Hubert was the obstacle last year and is the obstacle this year when it comes to spending more to get better players.

If he chose not to spend the available money last year, and refuses to ask for more this year, the buck absolutely stops with him. No pun intended.

Thanks for the info.

I think it’s a GM and a front office’s job to understand the macro economics of their sport at all times. I get that Tanner is new at this but if he’s overpaying guys by a couple hundred thousand dollars relative to their market value, we’re talking about like a 20-30% overpay. You do that enough times, and you’ll pay for it.

I’m also not going to feel much sympathy here. Other programs are flourishing in the portal era. Others are getting left behind.

The whole sentimental and tangible value that used to come with playing at UNC doesn’t appear to have the same impact as it once did. I don’t really necessarily blame today’s player. It’s a short term economy. That’s the current marketplace and one program, thats tremendously idealistic, wont change that reality.

UNC needs to find their next advantage or else it’s in danger of becoming just another program.

Adapt or die.

Sadly, I think we already died. Just need to be officially declared. Sad days indeed. Program is a mess. Seems like massive changes are needed. Those who know me realize this is my normal opinions.

Well it was all about $$$$$ we had 700k..he wanted and obviously got $2+ million....I am glad Tanner did not break the bank and put it on the credit card. THE haters on this board, and there are too many to mention, will despise HD no matter what. I am no HD apologist by any means, he has 1 more year IMO, but it is to the point where coming on this board and reading one vitrolic anti HD post after another is tiresome and sad.

Or you'll get the players Hubert needs to do better, and revenues will over-match the overpay.

If we are overpaying for players and still not getting the players Hubert needs, we either need to pay even more, or find a coach who can win at a higher level with the players we're willing to pay for.

Thanks for the excellent description of what happened. People who actually heard and didn't resist the facts stated now know what happened. I am happy we didn't simply "go rogue" and bust up our budget to get a name. I am thrilled we have people who have worked with what we have and built a competitive team which I believe will be more successful than last year! Some people clearly are miserable all the time and also want others to wallow in misery with them! I never sink to their level but I recognize them and I laugh at their takes most of the time! So we really want to compare ourselves to two schools who have had unlimited budgets and have been willing to blatantly cheat for decades??? Sorry, but winning isn't worth sacrificing character to me! AND I really don't see Stojakovic as the otherworldly talent peeps are building him up to be! He isn't his daddy. Breaking the bank for him is like throwing money at Bronny in the hope he might become LeBron!

Great Job Radar staff and Tar Heel Family!

You would think we missed out on some mega talent...according to a few of the self appointed experts on here, he plays terrible defense. I thought these Same folks were blasting HD because we had a bunch of poor defenders last year. Now they want to add a another poor defender???? These haters will only be satisfied when Hubert is fired.

I don't care that we didn't get Stojak. I do care that we don't seem to have the money to fill the hole left by Drake.

I like that our current roster looks taller and better balanced.

I don't think people are saying he's a mega talent. I think people are saying he fits a pretty significant need. Or at least that's what I'm saying, lol. Not trying to put words in people's mouths.

And sure he isn't a defender (neither was his dad) but this team has some plus defenders on paper and more rim protection than last season so theoretically, you can put a minus defender on the opponent's worst perimeter offensive player or put him on a 3-and-D guy. I don't believe you can hide bad defenders in today's basketball, but there may be enough there with Trimble, Wilson, and Veesaar to offset some of his defensive liabilities.

But I don't think people here think he's an all world talent. He simply fits a pretty big need at this point.

I certainly hope they'll be more successful than last year but that probably shouldn't be the bar for this staff or program. If they have a repeat of last year or worse, then a change has to be made.

WoW key, could not have said that better! Kudos my man!

Pretty sure they were going to eclipse the 11.3 if Powell came back. Donors need to do the same with whomever we are interested in next.

Some serious revelations in this podcast.
Hope you paid special attention when AJ said he was not sure we were ever really in it for Stojak. IT was the agent that was shopping the kid around not the player, the player committed to where he was going to commit all along. But fans just jumped at the thought of adding a new shiny toy, forget about area of need, we just want this new toy. Recall me saying I didn't care where Stojak went, starting to understand now why I said that? LOL

Why would sources suddenly go so quiet?

I think many of us would say that UNC basketball has spent too much money on some guys.

I do not think it was just abut Illinois having the money all along. Stojakovic has said very positive things about Illini coach Brad Underwood. I think the starting point was that - he feels Underwood is a coach who will use him and develop him as he wants.

Guardrails for the programs - yes, that is common sense. The problem is that the biggest money schools are all Major football powers, and they all are 100% Libertarian in all this, because they intend to drive as many people out of being able to compete with them as possible. The more that this is Wide Open Greed is not just Good Greed is GOD, the more that really bad stuff gets made permanent.

I think it is ok to say this now, if Drake decided to pul out of the draft and come back to UNC the money for him would be there, it would not come from the NIL. Do you recall the recent article about duke and how a few years ago they formed a group of duke alums that are outside of NIL, that pays for some duke recruits. I know of at east 1 such group of former UNC alums of former players that are working on something very similar. That is where the money for Drake is and has been coming from but it isn't just for any player, this fund is specific to Drake.

I hate that UNC is playing catch up with duke on so many aspects of where this stuff is headed. WE have a great business school so why have we not used that to map out smarter directions rather than have to copy things from other programs, they should be coping us? That is a failure of the school as a whole to marshal all of it's assets to solve a problem. UNC is worried about building new buildings at the tune of a billion dollars while duke is spending far less bringing in superior talents.

Yet if he had signed, you would be having an absolute love fest on here. Family this, Family is forever, welcome to the Family, Great Job Hubs, etc.........

Is having a "competitive" team where the bar is now? I guess with this staff the answer is pretty clear.

So if you express frustration and question the going ons of a team you have followed for 40-50 years, you are "misreable all the time and also want others to wallow in misery with them"? SMH....you sir are out of touch with the reality surrounding this program.

Optimism is fine......what you spew is nausiating.
