Today blows

I'm assuming you're joking. I mean, there's the one little intersection with a couple places but the only place worth a shit there is Poe's - which is amazing and probably my favorite spot in the entire Charleston area. But Bert's sucks (I think they closed anyway), Dunleavy's sucks. Atlanticville is a restaurant right near there and has amazing food but the ambiance is lame as hell. And the beaches on Sullivan's are very private and quiet but there are absolutely no waves and the beaches are fairly narrow for SC. My wife and I almost rented a house on Sullivan's but at the last minute pulled out because they price everything there as if it's the most amazing spot in the area and I just don't get it.
Oh yeah hell no, don't STAY on Sullivan's....just roll in there on a Friday night to eat at Poe's and grab a couple drinks at that pub that's there. And then roll in on Sunday for brunch at whatever that Mexican place is called that has the bloody mary bar with like bacon and shit

Well, right off the bat, you're omitting the best two places on the island. The Sea Biscuit is the best breakfast joint in the area. I highly recommend. And the Boathouse has great food and the most amazing views of the Intracoastal Waterway at sunset - just gorgeous.

But to rank your's,

Acme - great food and more of a locals' spot
Page's - terrible atmosphere but really good seafood and well priced
The Windjammer - I avoided that place most of the time unless they had a cool band playing or when they did the bikini contest. It's kind of a hangout for the dregs of the island and for tourist. You can get some good drugs there though.

Not familiar with the other two spots.
****. I forgot Boathouse. Yeah, Boathouse is the shit. You have to be joking me about Windjammer. Dude.... Windjammer burgers are to die for.

And if you haven't gotten a Cuban sandwich from The Dinghy by this time next year, I'm gonna slap the **** out of you.

I literally don't agree with a single thing you just typed about IOP. The water does not get that warm in the summer and isn't as murky as you make it out to be.

IOP beach is pretty damn beautiful actually, and I've been to beaches up and down the Atlantic and Gulf.

I agree with Blue. The water temps in August can reach 87 degrees at IOP (and Folly) and it's like slimy bath water at that point. SC beaches are better but the ocean off NC beaches is a better color and always a few degrees cooler. I wouldn't call the water "murky" though.

When you have had to deal with water temps in Kitty Hawk around 55 degrees in the middle of August....and you experience IOP water temps in the 80's...trust me, it felt like bath water.

And I did some research on the IOP water color, and apparently there's data to support my claim -- apparently there was a big dredging project a decade or so ago that caused it. Not a problem for me, but when you think of sharks and how most bites happen in murky water b/c they don't see very well...it's in the back of my mind.

FWIW, Topsail Island is my favorite beach, bar none, and they have long ranked top 5 nationally for shark attacks, so this is not at all a deterrent for me. It's more-so for my kids' sakes. I lived on the coast long enough to know what to do if anything were to happen...they haven't.

Agreed about the water color of N.C. beaches but I like the SC beach part of the beach better than the beach part of N.C. beaches, if that makes sense.

Fair enough...just not as clear then. It stood out to me, is all I was saying. I was just surprised. But the beach itself was beyond gorgeous. Again, when you have gotten used to OBX, anything south of Hatteras is heaven.

Ehhh we just have different tastes. To me, Topsail is boring and is an "old person" beach. But I guess I'm just saying that cuz I'm young. But yeah, Outer Banks water is frigid.

.

I was always scared to eat there. I worked at a restaurant that used to be right next to it - a pizza shop called A Dough Re Mi (they still have one in Mt. P). And I saw the condition of our kitchen. Rats, cockroaches and even a snake every now and then were found in our kitchen. It's just the nature of a place on the beach. And while the spot in which I worked wasn't taken care of, it doesn't appear that Windjammer is either. I'll pass. Cold beer, sure. Food, no.

I will take your advice on that place though. I like a good Cuban.

That's the draw of Topsail, for me. I lived in Wilmington but my parents had a place on Topsail. When you are taking 18 credit hours in college and working 2 fulltime jobs...any chance I got to get away was for some place like Topsail. I worked in hotels so the last place I wanted to go was a club / bar that reminded me of exactly where I worked.

For sure. I'm right there with you. No contest on the actual beach. Better sand, wider beaches. SC beats NC all day everyday.

What kind of career change brought that kid's dad from New York City to Pikeville? He had to be on the lamb from the mob.
I want to say he was in construction, but I'm not 100% positive. I don't think they were ever actually in the city, more the Buffalo area. He was one of our little league football coaches. The mom was a high school teacher, she was my cross country coach.

That is true. I was living down there when they were doing a lot of work on the beach. But that was mostly at the farthest north part of the island - up near Wild Dunes. The beach erosion was so bad that they had to do something. That's interesting that they attribute the water color to that. I didn't know that. But in Wild Dunes, you had large condo buildings and the 17th and 18th holes of the famed Tom Fazio Links Course that were about to fall into the ocean.

Topsail was always our go-to beach vacation as a kid, and I loved it. I haven't been there in a looooong time, but that's where we decided to rent our beach house for a couple weeks (the $2K that I wined about spending in some other thread). It's just me, my brother and his family, and my parents just like old times. Looking very forward to it. Topsail was always a special place for us, and all of us going there again is like our family going full circle, or something else cheesy and sentimental like that.

With everything my family has been through, that's how it would feel if we ever had a family vacation there. We're more likely to have the libs and cons on this board come together in unity though. Oh well... You guys will enjoy it, I'm sure.

Whole different world when you get as far down as Pelham. The gnat line is a damn real thing.

My dad left me almost 30 acres on the Altamaha. My kids want to develop it and sell 10/20 water front lots. My question always is "Sell them to WHO?" The place ain't exactly experiencing a population boom.

My plan has always been to retire there and fish my arse off. Maybe cruise a party boat up and down and become a sotten river pirate. Build one of those log cabins with a deck looking out on the water and fall off it like a sotten river pirate on a deck.

Only problem is the HH6 just isn't particularly fond of the heat and humidity. The bugs, snakes, hogs and gators tend to put her off as well. The natives see a huge rattler warming in the roadway and see an opportunity for a side hustle...the 6 sees all the "Anaconda" movies flash through her brain. Her culture shock is rather severe.
