UNC at Maryland Game Thread: Game 1 (UNC wins 7-0)

Thank goodness there's a baseball game tonight to wash the taste of that awful basketball game out of my mouth. Blech!

Thornton starts on the mound for the Heels.

After both teams went scoreless in the first two innings, UNC gets back to back HRs from Dudek and Zengel. That was followed up with a Lassiter single, a Russell double, and a Ramirez double sandwiched around a couple outs before Parks Jordan grounds out to end the top of the third. It all amounts to 4 runs and the Heels lead 4-0 in the middle of the 3rd.

The Terps get a single, a fly out, a HBP, and a strikeout in the bottom of the third. Two outs, two men on base. Thornton comes up with a big strikeout to end the inning and Maryland stands a couple of runners.

Heels lead 4-0 heading into the 4th inning.

Heels get a single but no more in the top of the 4th.

Heels strand one, Terps with 3 fly outs in the 5th.

UNC still leads 4-0 T6.

Wow! Zengel with the 2 out homer, his second of the night! Lassiter pops out to end the top of the inning but the Heels expand their lead to 5-0 B6.

Maryland loads the bases with 1 out and the Heels are in trouble. But Thornton comes up with two enormous strikeouts to end the threat. Whew! Heels still hanging on to a 5-0 lead going into the 7th.

UNC puts a couple men on and gets a sac fly in the 7th to score another run. Heels lead 6-0 at the stretch.

Maryland gets two runners in scoring position but Thornton gets a K and pop out to end another threat. Heels kill another potential rally.

Heels get a couple walks in the 8th, bunt to advance the runners, and get a sac fly to put another run in the board before the inning ends. 7-0 UNC.

Riley Hovis on for Thornton in the 8th.

Hovis loads the bases but gets a HUGE full count strikeout to end yet another threat. The Terps have stander 14 runners through 8 innings and the Heels have come up big in some tight spots.

T9 Heels still lead 7-0.

Heels go down in order in the 9th.

Also, beer is delicious.

Hovis gets a strikeout, a fly out, and another strikeout to end the game.

Heels win 7-0. Game 2 of the series starts at 2:00 tomorrow, and since you don't have any UNC basketball to watch....
