Pretty cool info. At this point, in my opinion, this team will be watching the tourney this year. Not necessarily due to that terrible loss yesterday but the entire body of work. However, winning the remaing home games and stealing a win at Wake and Clemson could earn a bid. Based on what we've seen so far, that scenario is highly unlikely(dookies licking their chops, twice). They could get hot and make a run tho, I donno... Wait dangit, I'm all over the place, lmao...

To your point, here's Pomeroy's ranking of the conferences with a positive rating. We used to be fairly reliably in the top 3. And even more recently, when we have been stuck in 5th or 6th place, we have at least been in the top tier - closer to those above us than to those below. We're 5th again, but not in the top tier any more.

That's not UNC's fault (although we are contributing to the slide). We were losing ground, and made it worse with our additions (except for SMU, apparently).

To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of how Pomeroy calculates conference strength, but I can't really disagree with his rankings, either.

The ACC is closer to the Mountain West than the Big East. Big 12, Big 10, and the SEC are galaxies above top to bottom.

Roy also had a borderline (maybe not borderline?) hall of fame coaching career at Kansas before coming to UNC. He also arrived at his Kansas peak where he made 2 straight Final Fours before coming to UNC. So of course the fanbase would exercise much more patience with him.

Absolutely, Roy was in the Hubert position when starting at Kansas, not as the established guy leaving Kansas for UNC.
