UNC gets first portal commit in Paxson Wojcik

It's better in the sense Wojcik is hopefully happy in a 5-10 min a game role. The other guys clearly were not.
No doubt he wanted to play here so he could average 2 minutes a game. Unless one of the other guys were a team cancer, seems like a sideways move for a team that needs significant improvement. Maybe he'll surprise us and be great, though.

All 6 spots. Love, Puff, Styles, Nickel, McKoy, Shaver = 6 open spots

If it makes you feel better, just think of Wojcik as being the guy who is using 3-star Will Shaver's scholarship for one season. Then it will be open for a 2024 recruit to use.
I meant 5 left after him. Hopefully, he turns out good, but I just dont see it. He seems very one-dimensional in that video that was posted. Also in that video, he wasn't doing what we are bringing him in to do, which is shoot the 3.

I hope I stand corrected, but I also hope the other 5 we land (if filling all 5) will be better than him.

Wojic is not a starter, he is a situational guy off the bench that you can call on to snipe a couple jump shots for you and not throw it away. Have to see who else we get to have a great feel for where this kid falls in to the mix. He could be a Wes miller type of player, comes off the bench and gives you 4-10pts and hustles.

Snipers don't shoot 67% from the free throw line though. Not sure he's a great shooter. More a decent but limited all around player.

38% on nearly 6 3pt attempts per game would seem to warrant the sniper label.

His FT attempts were only about 3 per game.

He's shot 172 free throws over his career, and 67% is pretty bad. Even 77% would not really indicate a sharp shooter. Nance also has a good 3-pt percentage own season.

I don't think he's a bad shooter or anything, but it doesn't seem likely he's all that good at it, unless he's one of the rare guys who can't shoot a FT but has strong 3 pt skill.

Dragic had a 38 game stretch in the NBA where he shot 48% from 3 and 72% from FT line.

JR Smith was a career 37% 3pt shooter who shot 73% from the FT line. He had 5 NBA seasons where he shot under 70% from the FT line.

Bruce Bowen was a career 39% 3pt shooter. He shot 57% from the FT line over 13 NBA seasons.

Deron Williams, Boris Diaw, Al Harrington, Richard Jefferson all shot over 40% from 3 and under 75% from the FT line.

Nick Anderson was 36% from 3 and 66% from FT.

Wow, Google has brought up a ton of discussions about this topic. Too many names to list from the NBA. Haven't even touched the college ranks yet.

These comparisons are comical and apples to watermelons.

You have already said you feel he is a bench guy who might not play much.

Why the need to keep defending him to those not that impressed with silly and non sensical comparisons.

fatigue, foul trouble & injuries...gotta put 5 on the court...transfer portal is a bargain bin

Dude you are working way too hard to try to make the kid something you don't even believe he is. OK, you used the term sharpshooter, doesn't fit some people's idea of it. I tend to agree with them, and from what you have said I think you do too, but it's a pissing contest now, so pass me the water need ammunition.

Spot on.

5 more scholarships to fill, and the staff intends to fill them all.

Don't be surprised if the bench guys commit first.
You keep saying that, but Hubert himself just stated
"Kids want to play and they want to play right away, and they want to play a lot of minutes, and realistically, if you have 13 scholarship guys --- you can't keep 13 scholarship guys happy in terms of minutes. The days of growth and progression every year is very rare. Kids want to play, they want a role. The word that they use now is they want a path. The path that I had in college and the path that I had in the NBA, I made that path. I made that path by hard work and perseverance"
This doesn't sound like somebody that is going to add 5-6 players in the portal to get to 13 scholarships.

Hubert said Styles and Dunn were going to be among the greatest players to ever put on a UNC jersey. He said Zayden High is the best shooting big in the whole 2023 class. Hubert says a lot of stuff in press conferences and interviews. If you want to use that random quote where Hubert opines about why guys transfer, to try and support the incorrect opinion you hold about how recruiting is going to go for UNC this offseason, more power to you.

11 or 12.
We will see come August

13 scholarships. The best rotations are 7-9 deep. You have to scrimmage against someone in practice (and it can’t always be the walk ons)
a team needs 4-6 SCHOLARSHIP players that can accept their roles as a non starter.
Bad chemistry can wreck a team (see this year). A player that can accept their role as a limited bench sub is just as important as the 5 starters.
A team is not just 5 players (at least to everyone on these boards that scream about bench use). I’m hoping more are to come.
if not, then I can understand the hand wringing

One thing that I fall victim to is making assumptions based on where these kids played before. But the Final Four shows that good players can come from anywhere. I think San Diego State has a key player who played at Seattle U. Didn't Marquise Nowell play at Little-Rock? I think Miami has a couple of kids from low-major schools.

Kids can play regardless of where they were playing before.

One thing about Wojcik. If he can make a corner 3, he's going to get some PT. That's a HUGE need for this team. Someone who can stretch the defense from either corner.

I believe that how deep you go in your bench depends on the talent you have on that bench AND the style of play you want. By style of play I mean, is your attack more a half court attack or do you push the pace at every opportunity. Do you press and trap on defense or is it mostly a half court defense?

I like a deep bench cause I like pushing tempo, I like more pressure and trapping on defense, I love fresh legs over tired legs, I do not like playing guys over 30mins a game. If I have to play a kid over 30mins a game what the heck do I do when that kid gets hurt, at best I am going to wear my guy down playing all those minutes so that he becomes a shell of what he could be on fresher legs at the end of the season. Tired players tend to get in to foul trouble, they at times have to back off on defense because they do not want to pick up early fouls, if I am going deep in to my bench I don't worry as much when a single guy gets in to foul trouble, my guys can be aggressive for 40mins. Tired players also tend to get hurt, especially with lower body injuries, especially ankles. With the weight Bacot carries and the minutes he has been asked to play, is it any wonder he has struggled with ankle injuries the last 2 seasons?

A thing I have NEVER understood, coaches that go deep in to their bench in the regular season tend to tighten up the rotations and shorten their bench in post season play? Why would you go away from what got you there in the post season? Especially the way the NCAAT is run, with a day off between potential season ending games? I mean, if it got you to the NCAAT, especially if you had a really good season, it ain't broke to the point of needing to be fixed, stay with what got you there! You do not lose as many to the portal if they are playing, you lose them when they are not getting the playing time. No kid wants to play 40min of flat out all in effort for 40mins but they all love to take advantage of a defender on tired legs and flush it in his face!

While most of the time great shooters (I am not calling Wojick a great shooter) do shoot very high % at the free throw line it isn't 100% true all the time either. Reason is, free throw shooting is more about being able to calm your mind down, to just slow everything down and be able to remain completely focused on that foul shot, that is easier said than done in front of several thousand screaming fans. At the free throw line you have time to think, in game action you don't have much time to think, it is about see and react, thinking to much is not a great thing, not good to get to far in to your own head.

100% correct. Currently they’re over 1,100 kids in the portal right now and several will be key producers for NCAA Tournament teams next March.

It is REALLY obvious that some of you have NO CLUE about the game of basketball. We could go out and get the top 6 transfers in the portal and you would STILL be whining and complaining.

What brought that on, 7 months later? Just curious.

What seems clear is that Hubert's tendency to exaggerate how exceptional and amazing and talented every one of his players is doesn't seem to have hurt his ability to bring in good looking players from the portal.

Who knows, maybe this year all his players really will be that great. Early signs are encouraging.

Because Dave said at EVERY possible chance that " The plan" was to fill every scholarship. I told him from the get go that I didn't think that was even remotely going to happen because of the new transfer portal rules. 11-12 scholarship will be the new normal going forward.

Yeah, I don't like the hyperbole from Hubert either. I was just piling on Dave about the scholarship numbers. All in fun😉
