UNC vs. Pitt - Game 1 Thread

Freshman Brian Miller opens the 2nd inning with a single and stolen base.

After two strikeouts, the Heels get a walk and an error to load the bases.

Tyler Ramirez capitalizes with a 3-run double that hits the outfield wall! Heels up 3-0, runner on 2nd, 2 outs, T2.

Another strikeout stops the bleeding, but the Heels jump out to the early lead.

Pitt gets a single, a balk, a sac bunt, and a sac fly to score a run. That cuts the UNC lead to 3-2.

Next Pitt batter fights off several full-count pitches to eventually get the walk.

Runner on 1st, 2 away, B3.

Raburn strikes out but Dunbar drops a full-count pitch into left center for a single.

Dudek at the plate draws a full count of his own. He almost hits into a double play but beats the throw at 1st.

Wild pitch advances Dudek to 2nd base. 2 outs T4.

Gallen pegs the leadoff batter, but he's caught stealing moments later.

Next batter crushes one for the second Pitt home run of the game, which evens the score at 3 apiece. 1 out here in the bottom of the 4th.

Gallen isses a walk.

Pitt executes the hit-and-run perfectly to put runners on the corners with 1 out, game tied 3-3 here in the bottom of the 4th. Panthers threatening to take the lead here.

Gallen with a 2-1 pitch gets lucky as the shot down the RF line is juuuust foul. Next pitch is a ball to load the count. So the payoff pitch coming with the bases loaded....

Pop fly somehow falls in between Warmoth and Bolt. Runner scores, bases still loaded, still one out.

Gallen is still in but there's activity in the UNC bullpen.

Next batter with a sac fly and that pushes the Pitt lead to 5-3 with 2 down B4.

Gallen walks the next batter and the bases are loaded yet again.

His day is finally done. Pitt leads 5-3 with 2 out in the bottom of the 4th, bases loaded.

Trevor Kelley on the hump now for the Heels.

Unbelievable. He balks before even throwing a pitch, and another run scores. 6-3 Pitt, runners on 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs.

The Pitt batter drives one into the gap, and two more runs score. That's 6 runs in this inning and the Panthers now lead 8-3.

Kelley finally gets a ground out to end a brutal, brutal inning for the Heels.

Ramirez walks to start the inning. Still a lot of game left to be played, so you have to hope the Heels can chip away at this lead a little each inning.

Gahagan with a shot to 3rd base, but it's defended nicely to get the out at 1st. Ramirez advances to 2nd.

Warmoth strikes out swinging. Big pitch there by Pitt to get the 2nd out.

Pate up to bat, hits a long ball to the outfield wall, and that will score Ramirez and Bolt. Heels cut into the lead and now trail 8-5 with 2 outs and a runner on 1st.

Kelley allows another hit to the first Pitt batter, a blooper single.

Turns right around and gets a strikeout against Maldonado, the first time the Panthers' right fielder has been retired today.

Next batter hits into a 1-6-3 double play despite Gahagan having to double-clutch the throw to first.

Hopefully Kelley is settling in and the Heels can hold Pitt with good D while continuing to produce at the plate.

Heels get a bunt single from Kennedy and a Lassiter single to put 2 on with 2 out.

An infield mix-up allows a hit between the SS and 3B and a run scores! Heels now trail 8-6 with runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.

THEN A SKYE BOLT 3-RUN HOMER PUTS THE HEELS BACK IN FRONT 9-8!!! Wow!!!

A ground ball turns into the 3rd out, but UNC has stormed back with 6 runs in the last two innings to retake the lead.

Heels up 9-8 M6. Still a lot of ball to be played.

Kelley opens with a strikeout. One away B6.

Has the next batter down 0-2, but the slider gets away from him and hits the batter.

Single to right center puts runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Ugh.

C'mon, Heels!

Ball hit hard to Gahagan. He knocks it down, but can't make the play, and here we go again.

Bases loaded with 1 out, Heels clinging to a 9-8 lead, bottom of the 6th.

Dunbar to the mound to talk with Kelley. Need a big play here.

I spoke too soon. Dunbar is joined at the mound by pitching coach Scott Forbes, and Kelley's day is done.

Heels bring in Trent Thornton. He's been in plenty of tight spots like this before.

Please, please, please get us out of this inning without any runs scored!

Sac fly to RF makes it a 9-9 ballgame. 2 outs, runners at the corners.

Pitt steals 2nd base, UNC concedes.

Ground out ends the inning. Six innings in the book and we're knotted up.

Pitt with a lead-off hit. That makes 5 of 7 innings the lead-off man has gotten aboard.

Pitch gets by Dunbar and the runner moves into scoring position.

Full count to the next batter but Thornton gets the strikeout! 1 away.

A walk loads the bases with 2 outs in a 9-9 game. Man, this is killing me!

Thornton goes up in the count 0-2 against the next batter. Big spot here. Next three pitches are balls. Count goes full and here comes the payoff pitch.

Dunbar to the mound. Not sure I like him breaking Thornton's concentration there. Here we go...

Line drive scores 3 runs and Pitt is back in front 12-9. Dammit, Korey. Why'd you have to go mess with him? Grrr....

Well, after Sutherland grounds out Lassiter comes up with a double.

Pitching change for the Panthers.

I'm going to have to sign off shortly. Have several errands to run before the basketball game tonight.

Hopefully the Diamond Heels have another rally left in them today. Go Heels!

RH, thanks for the updates. Pitt won the game 12-9. UNC's pitching has taken quite a beating in several games this year.

I didn't watch the game, only listened online, but it was clear Gallen was struggling with his control. Surprised he stayed in as long as he did, but we didn't get much help from our bullpen either. Have to tip your hat to Pitt and their hot bats today.
