Underrated 80s Songs

Well I graduated high school in 1988.. so 10 - 19 years old was 80's music for me.
Yeah, we got the shit-end of the stick for almost everything in a cultural perspective. The music of the 80s, by comparison to the 50s, 60s, and 70s, was absolute shit. There are a few exceptions... a very, very few exceptions...

I'm not a big Aerosmith fan but I love this collab and this video. I wish there was a lot more of this out there.

I saw Kid Rock with Rev. Run in concert in Charleston a few years back and that was pretty cool..
Country music has been doing this with some stuff the last couple of years as well. Even if one doesn't automatically find themselves drawn there, it's pretty smart marketing as you bring in fans of both genres. Of course, that doesn't include the old line about having both kinds of music "country and western".

I'm not much drawn to country rock or rock country. I don't mind the occasional foray of one into the other, but I like a fairly distinct separation there for the most part....and I'm way more rock and roll than country.

Funny thing though, to me the perfect blend of country and western and rock and roll music was epitomized by The Marshall Tucker Band, and I'm not sure that on a given day, I might not say that they are my all time favorite band.

The really good stuff was from the 70's, but I'm going to sneak this one in as an underrated eighties song.

I love the 80s. As much or more than anyone. And I cannot agree with @uncfootball- statement. 60s and 70s both would be ahead for me.
I like all three of those decades plus the 50s but I get more nostalgic about the stuff I heard in high school--which was 80s music mostly. Though I gotta admit there was some good stuff coming out 200 years ago too. #mozart #bach #beethoven :)

Not much of a fan of 80’s music, the 60’s and 70’s are my favorite decades. But MTB is my second favorite Southern Rock band behind the Allman Brothers and a top 10 favorite.

I'm gonna play a little fast and loose with the rules here (as if there are rules). This song was made most famous by Whitney Houston in the eighties, but I can't stand her or her soulless singing, so I'm going to post George Benson's original rendition from late 70's...it's got so much more feeling and I like his jazz- tinged flavor, although I'm not much of a jazz fan either.....

And so to continue in that vein sort of, George also had a really good cover of On Broadway. But that was recorded and released in the seventies too, so I'm offering AC/DC supposedly playing it live. I don't know when this is from but they were around in the eighties so if this misses the mark somehow, sue me.

have you heard the acoustic version and have you heard weezer do it?…both are really good.
yes on both counts unless you mean in person. If I like a tune, I usually seek different versions just for S&G's and youtube generally has a plethora.

TBH, I think Weezer's version is weak, and the acoustic version by A-ha doesn't really display the lead guy's amazing range. The instrumental version with the vocal tracks subtracted is interesting for one play.

there was good music in the eighties in between all the flock of seagulls eurocrap. I happen to like Springsteen big time and the first one here just got in to the eighties; but the second one and the whole Tunnel of Love album was solid eighties and really good. A lot of people don't care for him but the dude can write a damn song.

Agreed, but your link is the song from 1975, re-released in 1976. Here's the version from 1986.

Damn...Rick James could write some damn good music. His music was so recognizable. As soon as I heard Party All the Time, I knew he wrote it. Always had a funky bass groove.

I drooled every time I saw the MJG on TV. They had the sexy/slutty look that made me likey likey.

ETA: I saw them in Fayetteville back in 1985. Stone City Band played their background music. Lakeside and Con Funk Shun opened for them. I still have the ticket from the concert. I know it was in November. It was general admission so I was right up front by the stage. A friend named Bobby (RIP Brother) and I stood in line for 3 hours so we could get up at the stage. Damn....good days for me.

y’all bashing the 80’s music are fos. The only decade (well starting in late 70’s I’ll admit) with so many legit established genres churning out hits. There was southern rock, disco, r n b, punk, new wave, metal, hair bands,….all in the top 40. Led zep and Chaka khan. Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson. Prince and billy idol. Lionel Ritchie and oingo boingo. Diversity Never before seen and never seen again. The golden age of music. And yes mtv was the big catalyst. Today there’s basically two genres. Pop and rap. Fuking trash. Who’s doing the touring? 80’s bands. What songs are covered at the bars on sat nights? 80’s songs. What’s played on the juke box at 1:30 that has girls flashing their tits? “Just a small town girl….living in a lonely worrrrllldd”

The 80's was a good decade for rock music (not better than the earlier decades or even the 90's). More specifically hard rock matured. You had heavy metal catch it's stride with Metallica, Megadeth, etc and you also had the beginning of grunge with Soundgarden, Mudhoney, etc. But, when you throw in all genres of music, the 80's kinda sucks. I would say it rivals the 2000-2009 era of music as the worst in my lifetime.

What punk and metal were top 40 hits?
