Updates On Udoka And Others...

Why would we need another big? We have Meeks, Hicks, our freshman incoming plus we could go small at stretches.

I'm not saying he will leave, but I have to think if Meeks ends up with anything close to what he's averaging now, in points and rebounds, he could leave. That would leave a big need at the center spot.

Why would we need another big? .

Short answer: Insurance, depth, making sure the team doesn't get caught with it's pants down if players get injured, making sure Roy doesn't have to reach with a late offer if an underclassman declares early.

Long answer: You can never have enough good bigs

Easy answer, we are losing Brice & Joel James after this season and a good chance we could as well lose Meeks. If we lost Meeks our front court length would be Hicks and the frosh Tony Bradley with a walk on and Theo at near 6'7". Bottom line, we desperately need another big man from this class, even of Meeks comes back. The only 2 remaining shots we have to snag a big man in this class is Udoka and maybe the Allen kid that is waiting till the spring to commit.

Based on what I've seen so far of Meeks I would not say there is a lot of demand in the nba for his skill set. He is just not an explosive athlete regardless of the weight loss. He can be a really good college player but he is nowhere near the level of Sean May or Eric Williams--kid from wake that played with Chris Paul-- in terms of explosiveness. Not saying he will not try it ala jp but with tokoto the athleticism was there the basketball skills were lacking.

Zach Randolph is very athletic isn't he??

We seem to be on the outside looking in for any bigs in 2016 but if anybody can pull one out of the hat it is Roy. I know it is early but we don't seem to be on the top of the lists for any bigs in 2017. I know it is early but so many of these kids start having strong leans in their junior years.

Agreed, although it would be great to have Meeks here for 4 years to develop some additional Zach Randolph or Draymond Green type skills =). He is going to need them if he wants to play in the NBA.
At this point, I think Meeks is what he is. He's undersized to play center in the NBA. His best bet is going to be to develop some range on his jumper, out to say 25 feet or so. He could be an efficient stretch 4 in the NBA, especially with his vision and passing ability.

How do you know that?..Randolph didn't develop until he got to the league..wasn't he oad?
Randolph one season 10.8 and 6.7 on a final 4 team , Kennedy career 9.8(7.4 as a freshman) and 6.9 . Using the eye test he doesn't seem to be the scorer Randolph is but who knows.

If Udoka goes elsewhere I think this is the year we get a grad transfer at the PF or C if Meeks leaves early, and a PF seems likely even if Meeks stays. Great opportunity for a grad transfer to be a third big at UNC next season, and than have the UNC connections to play in Europe.

Well.... Udoka would have 3-4 years to continue to develop. Grad student not likely at this point (imo). Regardless, we need a true CENTER soon! Udoka would indeed be that guy...

Big if but if we can land both he and Alkins we would be very competitive next year. In the event that Jackson left and Meeks stays...

PG: Berry/Britt/Woods
SG: Alkins/Kenny/Woods/Robinson
SF: Theo/Alkins/Robinson
PF: Hicks/Maye/Bradley
C: Meeks/Udoka/Bradley

Obviously it's a hypothetical scenario and a lot of the positions are interchangeable, Roy could use two of Berry/Britt/Woods at any point since we have seen a lot of two PG lineups lately. PF and C are fairly interchangeable in this O but any combination of those guys would be nice. Alkins, Theo and Robinson can all play the 2 or 3. I would love to have both with us next year. Alkins might help us more immediately if Meeks stays but even if Meeks remains we need some big men since Hicks and Meeks are both juniors.

Prefer Alkins. Don't see Meeks going this year. I don't think he would get drafted in the 1st round and he is kind of stuck where he doesn't really fit in at a position in the NBA. He can't play the 4 and can't really play the 5 either.

I don't think it is possible for him to increase his jump, so it might be he is just what he is. However, he did transform into a much better form. He is probably an overseas player.

IMO, Meeks probably has more to risk by coming back for his senior year. I don't think he will be that much of a different player so he might as well leave after this season. He'll definitely get drafted, but who knows if it'll be in the first or second round. I look for us to lose 4 players and possibly 5 at the end of the season.

From the way half of you guys talk...Meeks doesn't stand a chance on the next level!!...when all I've seen for the last 3 years is improvement and dedication....who knows how far this will take him on the next level!!

Meeks would have flourished in the golden era of the NBA (mid 80s through late 90s). His game is built upon a firm understanding of positioning and a bevy of skills - not athletic ability. I do think he will make an NBA roster and I think if he gets on with the right team, he can be a solid role player. But not every team is going to see his value. He'll be lucky to get drafted in the first round regardless of when he goes. And I'll maintain that belief even if he finishes the year with averages of 20 and 10.
