UNC improves to 71-36-2 all-time against Wake Forest. The Tar Heels have won the last two games, the highest scoring games in series history.
Last year, UNC beat Wake Forest, 59-53. Today’s 113 points surpass the 112 the teams combined to score in last year’s game, which were the most in series history until today.
This was the first time in series history either team scored 50 points in consecutive games. Wake Forest’s 55 points are the most by the Deacons against UNC (their previous high was 53 last season).
This is the fourth time UNC has scored 50 points in consecutive seasons against an opponent (59 in 2000 and 52 in 2001 against Duke; 61 in 1935 and 59 in 1936 vs. Virginia; and 61 in 1969 and 62 in 1970 vs. VMI).
Wake Forest’s 615 yards of total offense are the second most by an opponent in a Carolina victory. Arizona State gained 657 in Tempe in a 38-35 UNC win in 2002.
Wake Forest’s 55 points are the most points ever by an opponent in a UNC win. The previous record was 53 by the Deacons last season.
Mack Brown improves to 264-136-1 overall, including an 89-60-1 record in 13 seasons as head coach of the Tar Heels. Brown is 10-4 all-time against Wake Forest (10-3 as UNC’s head coach).
This was UNC’s first win over an AP top-10 team since beating No. 9 Miami on the road last season. It was UNC’s first home win over an AP top-10 team since beating No. 4 Miami in 2004.
Sam Howell set the UNC career record for total offense. Howell has 10,515 total yards in 34 games. He passed the previous school record of 10,423 held by Marquise Williams (2012-15).

Charlie Justice held the UNC total offense record from 1949 until Jason Stanicek broke the mark in 1994. Howell is the fourth Tar Heel to establish new records since Stanicek, including Ronald Curry in 2001, Darian Durant in 2004, Marquise Williams in 2015 and Howell in 2021.
Howell rushed for two touchdowns in the first quarter. He has rushed for eight scores this season; he had six in his first two seasons combined. All eight of his rushing touchdowns this year have been longer than 10 yards. It was his third game this season with multiple rushing touchdowns.
Howell threw one touchdown pass, a 29-yard strike to Antoine Green. Howell has thrown a touchdown pass in all 34 of his games as a Tar Heel, the longest active streak in the country.
Howell rushed for 104 yards. It was his fifth game this season gaining 100 or more rushing yards. He had a career-high 21 rushing attempts today.
Howell has gained 1,071 total yards of offense and accounted for 12 touchdowns in three career games against Wake Forest.
Carolina running back Ty Chandler rushed for a career-high 213 yards and four touchdowns. This was his third 100-yard game as a Tar Heel.
Chandler became the first Tar Heel with four rushing touchdowns in a game since Leon Johnson against UTEP in 1993.
Chandler’s 213 rushing yards are the 22nd most in UNC single-game history. He is the 14th Tar Heel to gain 200 or more rushing yards in a game.
Chandler’s 213 yards are the third most by a Tar Heel against Wake Forest (Ronnie McGill 244 in 2003 and Tyrone Anthony 224 in 1981).
Chandler rushed for a career high four touchdowns. He has rushed for multiple touchdowns in the last three games and four times this season.
Tomon Fox notched his 25th career sack. He passed Marcus Jones (1992-95) and Quinton Coples (2008-11) for solo third in UNC history in career sacks.
Cedric Gray made a career-high 12 tackles. It was his second straight game with a career high. He had 11 against Florida State and Notre Dame.
Cam’ron Kelly had his second two-interception game of the season. He is the first Tar Heel with four interceptions in a season since MJ Stewart in 2015.
True freshman Jahvaree Ritzie made his first quarterback sack.
Grayson Aktins made field goals from 31, 23 and 25 yards, his first three field-goal game as a Tar Heel.
Wide receiver Justin Olsen’s 45-yard reception in the third quarter was the longest catch of his career.
Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman threw five touchdown passes and rushed for two scores. He is the first UNC opponent ever to account for seven TDs in a game. Seven players were responsible for six (Boston College’s Doug Flutie in 1984, Maryland’s Scott Milanovich in 1993, Maryland’s Scott O’Brien in 2003, Clemson’s Tajh Boyd in 2011, ECU’s Shane Carden in 2013, Clemson’s DeShaun Watson in 2014 and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson in 2017).
Hartman is the first opponent to throw five TDs since Watson had six in 2014.
This was Carolina’s first win after trailing after three quarters since the 2020 win over Wake Forest. The Deacons led 48-34 after three quarters today; last season Wake Forest led 45-31 heading into the final quarter.
Carolina gained 546 yards, the fourth time this season UNC gained 500 or more yards in a game. Wake Forest’s 615 yards are the most allowed by UNC this season (previous high was 577 by Virginia).
The Tar Heels rushed for 358 yards today, the second most this season (392 vs. Virginia).
